It's easy for some of us who speak more than one language.  Even then, you'll meet people who speak some language that you do not.  So you need a translator.

You can set up the Second Life Viewer to automatically translate text chat into the language of your choosing. You must set up an account with Google or Bing to enable text chat translation.  Previously, Google provided free translation services, but this has now ended, and you must establish your own account with Bing or Google which may incur a cost.

Choose Me > Preferences > Chat, then click Chat Translation Settings to display the CHAT TRANSLATION SETTINGS window.

Select Enable machine translation while chatting to automatically translate chat text to the language specified in the Translate chat into field.

Using Bing

To use the Microsoft Bing Translator service, you must get a Microsoft Application ID as follows:

  1. Go to the Bing webmaster center. You must sign in with your Windows Live ID.
  2. Enter the required information in the form and click Save to get an Application ID.
  3. Copy and paste your Application ID into the text field.
  4. Click Verify.

Once you have verified your Application ID, the Viewer will use the Bing Translator

Using Google

To use the Google Translate API, you must get a Google API key, as follows:

  1. Go to the Google API console. You must sign in with your Google account.
  2. Set up a new API project.
  3. Enable the Translate API.
  4. Click on Billing to set up billing for the project.
  5. Copy and paste your API key into the text field.
  6. Click Verify.

Once you have verified your Application ID, the Viewer will use Google Translate API.
