My college roomate and I both share the same internet connection, thus we have the same connection speeds. We are both physically connected via Gigabit ethernet. We both have the same Intel Core i7 CPU, same same amount of RAM and we both use Windows 8. We both also use the official SL Viewer 3.4.5. The difference is that my roomate has an Nvidia Geforce GT 610 video card and I have an AMD Radeon HD 7970 GE.

When we play network games like Crysis 3 or other network games, I usually get slightly better frame rates. When we play SL on ultra graphics settings, he typically gets 70 fps on his Geforce 610 at the exact same sim as me  while I get 7 fps on my Radeon 7970.

After reading this forum and talking to people on help island, many people seem to strongly recommends Nvidia for OpenGL gaming, especially for SL, should I upgrade to a Geforce 610 to avoid pink screens, problems with Vertex Shaders and for better frame rates?

I really like the graphics of the Radeon 7970 but if it can't run SL as well as a Geforce 610, I will look at my options. The games I mainly play are Crysis 3, Call of Duty, Devil May Cry, Second Life and Assassin's Creed III.

A nVidia gt 610 is an entry level office graphics card, a radeon 7870 (even if it's AMD/ATI) a high end card. Something seems to be seriously wrong with your system when you get only 7 fps with that card. Are you using the proper driver for it?

Even if I am no fan of AMD graphics, changing a 7870 for a GTX 610 is like changing from a BMW to a Yugo and it is definitively no 'upgrade'. The nVidia equivalent to a 7970 would be a 660 TI or a 670

J.

P.S. I doubt that a nVidia 610 is capable of 70 fps in ultra graphics.

Sounds like your computer is only using onboard graphics in SL rather than the Radeon HD 7970 if you are only achieving 7 fps. Either that or you have a driver issue. Are you using the latest driver? The Radeon HD 7970 is in the Nvidia GTX 680 performance bracket and so far ahead of the entry level Nvidia GT610 it's a no-contest.

I too find it difficult to believe 70 fps in Ultra with a Nvidia GT610.
