Question

Posted

 I was in second life once before, and have recently returned with a new avi.

Yesterday, I rezzed a prim in a sandbox and made it into a 20x20x20 object.  I thought that was impossible - that 10x10x10 was the max.  Today I came into SL and some items that I bought yesterday were only half there - for example, a corset was there but matching stockings had disappeared.  Hmmm, what is going on?  I only use the SL Viewer and have no plans to download any others...I get addicted to playing when I get into the fancy viewers (like Firestorm for example).  Have the rules for mega prims changed?  Is SL having troubles with people losing inventory, lately?

We have been able to make objects up to 64m x 64m x 64m since mid-summer in 2011. That's long enough in the past to be called ancient history in SL.

Losing items is a separate question.  Without knowing anything more about the circumstances of your loss, I can't guess the cause, but I can point you to possible solutions >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Lost_inventory .  In specific answer to your question, though ... no, SL is not having any particularly unusual rash of inventory problems.  There was an unscheduled inventory maintenance today and, as is common at such times, residents were told, "During this time, some residents may be logged off and will be temporarily unable to log in, or experience inventory loading issues."

@Rolig,

LL didn't post the issue relating to unscheduled inventory maintenance on the Grid Status page for well over an hour after the inventory problems first appeared. LL really needs to be quicker in posting issues on the Grid Status page. I can understand delays if an issue occurs in the middle of the night SLT but this occurred in the middle of the afternoon for them.

Yeah, they really take their time. It's annoying. Posting an outage after the fact doesn't help residents avoid the consequences. All it does is explain why we had problems.

Regarding inventory loss and the latest messes. I was on the grid when all the database stuff was happening yesterday and it was very messy. ALSO, in the last week I have had items gone missing as well as some from LONG ago pop up unexpectedly in my top level inventory (where they never were except when first unpacked).

So yes, lots of database issues seem to be happening. I don't understand how it all works and oftentimes clearing your cache will get back missing items. Other times, they reappear magically in a few days or weeks -- and sometimes YEARS later (now I have to admit THAT was a surprise).  This has happened to many others, not just me. Personally I think that the folks that say they never lose anything aren't all that in touch with their inventories :D. OR maybe they are extra special lucky.

So you aren't alone. That doesn't help, I know.

Lost inventory comes in two flavors; actually lost and apparently lost. The later can be fixed. The prior requires a trouble ticket be filed with the Lab. Also, if you use the SL Viewer and have consistent problems with inventory file a trouble ticket. There is something on the Lab's side that gets messed up. They now have a scripted fix that support can run to clear the problem.

Most apparently lost item problems come from connection problems. So, I suggest you run through Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection and eliminate those possible problems before filing and waiting on a trouble ticket.

There are a number of basic steps we have used for years to clear up apparently lost inventory problems. See them here: Lost Inventory and Missing Inventory Fix – Help -- this is getting a bit old, but the basic process remains valid.

On a side note, clearing cache is sometimes needed to clear up an inventory problem. But, in general it is the last resort troubleshooting step. For some problems, like when there is a connection problem, clearing the cache makes things much worse. Since connections problems are currently the most predominant reason for lost inventory, take that step as a last resort.
