why can't i see my wifes avatar, nametag, at all?

On firestorm it's in the same location Viewer - Preferences: General Tab

To show or hide usernames inworld, both above other avatars and in chat:

Log into Second Life.
Choose Me (Viewer - in case of Firestorm) > Preferences from the top menu.
Click the General tab.
Select the Usernames checkbox. If the box is checked, usernames are shown. If the box is not checked, usernames are hidden.
Click OK.

Did you derender her?

To rerender an object: From the top menu bar, select World → Asset Blacklist. Find the item you wish to remove, click it to highlight it, then click the Remove selected items from blacklist button.
You will then need to force a view refresh: change your active group to a different one (any, it doesn't matter which), and then cam around some OR TP out and back.
