Can I get rid of my linden home and trade it for the 512m of land instead?

Yes. You can abandon your Linden home: teleport there and choose "abandon land" from the "about land menu" (take back your own stuff to your inventory before you do so). The Linden home will be immediately removed from your properties, and you can use your 512 sqm bonus for a parcel on mainland, as you cannot keep the land where the Linden home is. The house cannot be removed, that is why you have to search for another parcel.  Use the map to search for available plots.

Please note that any house you will rez on your parcel will go against your prim count, unlike the Linden homes which are not against your 117 prims allowance.
