Everything I type comes up twice and I keep walking after I have stopped?

You have an unreliable Internet connection.  Your viewer and SL's servers are having a hard time keeping up with each other, so it takes a while for the servers to find out that you have moved or have tried to move an object.  Your specific problem with doubling chat and IMs usually happens if you have been trying to use wireless instead of a direct cable connection.  Wireless is a lousy way to connect to SL.  See if changing to a cable connection clears up most of your problems.
