I just recently made a post,  Welcome to all the new 2013, Second Life residents! on my blog, So Hawt SL.

In this post there are many many free items for, female avatars as well as links to other resources.

Males can actually use the fashion links as well, since many of the stores visited have male items too.

I have also included some video streams to help you get on your way or, help you learn things, you didn't know, you didn't know. lol.

 

I hope that you can find these useful.

 

Please remember, EVERYONE can use these items.. they are not only for new players, and they are "current" as of, January 30th, 2013.

Ah! Good to see up-to-date contributions like this. Me likey! Especially the videostreams you put together might be useful for newcomers, seeing as it's easier to watch a tutorial rather than plowing through bunches of text. Also, the freebies are good I'd say.
