You don't "need" L$.  You want them. There are so many free items in SL that you can live quite nicely without having to buy most things, and you have building tools to create many things that you want.  You will not starve to death or live in a cardboard box.  You can enjoy SL with a Basic membership and no financial obligations at all.  If you want L$, the easiest way to get it it to save your lunch money in RL once a week and buy L$ with it instead.  Almost all of the other methods that Val suggested either require a lot of skill and patience, or they give you tiny amounts of L$.
