Each sim in SL is on a different server in Linden Lab's server farm.  When you move from one sim to another, your avatar data files have to be transferred from one machine to the next.  It's a stressful time, so you are more likely to have problems with movement, asset transfer, and communication if the transfer has trouble.  SL's servers do not all run the same software, so moving from a sim on one code to one that's running a different one can cause problems, especially if you are on a fast-moving vehicle.  SLOW DOWN, or stop.  Also, if you are carrying a lot of scripts or are wearing a lot of attachments, you are giving the servers an extra load to worry about.  LIGHTEN THE LOAD.
