As a Premium member you can have up to 512 square meters of land tier free. If you choose a Linden Home, you have used your free tier. You can still purchase as much land as you want, but your free 512 is used on the Linden Home. So, if you abandon your Linden Home you now have 512 square meters of free tier you can use on land.

The advantages of abandoning a Linden Home are that without a Linden Home, you can use that free tier on owning Mainland.

The only disadvantage might be that with any 512 square meters of land you have a land impact allowance of 117 prims (except for double prim properties). The Linden Home does not count against that. If you purchase a plot of land then whatever you rez there will count, such as a home. However, you have more freedom on what you are allowed to do on a mainland parcel as opposed to a Linden Home, such as having skyboxes or businesses. Also, you have greater freedom on choosing exactly where you want to live depending on availability and also you can always expand your land holdings in that region, something you cannot do with a Linden Home.
