Help with understanding RLV

Recommended Posts

I guess you could call this an offshoot of a thread I started about the ihud that then became more about how to handle griefers and then RLV, My girl friend had had some trouble with some griefers that managed to grope her and then animate her avatar when I tped in to help her. I tried to do some research and checked the marketplace for items etc that could let them go that to her that didn't seem to need RLV When I asked her if she had RLV enabled she asked me what that was so I shared an article I got from the creator of the eon defense hud ( W H A T   I S   R L V ?  Author: Leona iDoll (lilfae Resident) which seemed to bring up more questions then it answered so we decided to turn to the forum to find out more about RLV before deciding to enable/use it for ourselves

What is it? what are the benifits of using it besides the adult aspects and what are all of the adult uses? what are the bad/ dangerous aspects ? ( I know this isn't real so its not dangerous it can't hurt us) from what I gathered someone could trick her into accepting something that gives them access to her avatar? true or not?

We are looking for any information good or bad about RLV and peoples opinions on it

Thank You for your help

RLV is a tool that allows one user to control another user's avatar and to a limited extent their viewer. It is a script that is placed in many devices, objects and jewelry. It is commonly used in cuffs, collars, ball gags, blind folds, chastity belts, corsets, mitts, bridles, racks, display cases, cages, posts, frames etc, the list is very long.

RLV is commonly used in BDSM and Gor and a few other applications. RLV is only a tool and it can be misused like any other tool, however with RLV there is one thing to keep in mind, it is easily turned off in your viewer or by logging in with LLs viewer. RLV is also a wonderful addition to a relationship if it is used with love, respect and trust.

RLV is almost the same as using locks and chains or a pair of RL handcuffs that some couples use in the bedroom. It is about control and if that turns you on then you will enjoy it.

There are a few people who hold classes about RLV, its a complex subject and it has many variations conditions and uses

I would recommend also posting your message here http://www.freedomcontinent.eu/  Leona iDoll (lilfae Resident) runs that website and I am sure she can help you. I see that she is not online or inworld, but she is a lovely woman and will help you if she can, IM her and perhaps she can help you directly.

Any of the helpers at the Adult hub would be of help to you and If you are still unclear, please IM me and I will see what I can do.

Hope that helps :cathappy:

Just to be slightly pedantic, RLV isn't a script that's put into an object, RLV is a set of functions that are in the viewer that are leveraged by a script that is put into an object and for it to have any effect, that object must be rezzed or worn by the person owning the object containing the script.

In other words, RLV must be enabled in a compatible viewer and the user of that viewer must relog with it enabled BEFORE anything can happen when using an RLV enabled object.

Some additional info that I have on my website:-

►   What is RLV (Restrained Love Viewer)?

RLV stands for "Restrained Love Viewer". It is a modified viewer that permits other avatars and traps control over your avatar. They might remove your clothing, force you to sit on objects or inflict restrictions like denying you to wear clothing or teleport for example.

RLV viewers are available from several 3rd parties in both Viewer 1 and Viewer 2 interface. So pick one that you prefer.

Viewer 1 - Phoenix is probably the most popular all round Viewer 1 choice. Singularity is another.

Viewer 2 - Firestorm, Marine Kelley's RLV 2, Catznip, Dolphin  are examples of popular  Viewer 2 choices.

RLV was originally associated with the BDSM community. But because the commands offer features not available to the standard viewer, scripters can also use RLV for other things. It is not necessarily BDSM related anymore. Examples are:

  • - Wet T-shirt contest products
  • - Store models that let the customer choose the outfit that the model wears prior to purchase
  • - Child role play "restraints" such as force TP home for dinner
  • - Rotating an avatar to face a particular direction

►   How does it work?

RLV commands are sent from a scripted object that you own. It must be either rezzed inworld in the same region as where you are or be something you wear. Without a scripted object that is owned by you, there is NO extra interaction to your avatar possible.

►   What is a Relay?

You must OWN a scripted object for it to be able to interact with you (and usually you need to wear it too). Therefore other avatars and objects that you do not own need a relay to send commands to you. The relay must be owned by you. They send a command to your relay. The relay sends the command to you. And then you will have to obey.

It is possible for objects in a different region to send commands to a worn relay. Many collars include a relay, see below. Relays are almost always free. There are many to choose from. Most will give you the ability to set permissions. Usually you can choose between allowing automatic access, limited access or that you always have to grant permission for a person or object to interact with you.

►   So if I remove the scripted object, nothing can interact and it's like the normal viewer?

Correct, now you understand it completely!

►   What's a "Collar"?

A collar is a scripted product primarily aimed at the D/s, Master/Slave community. The collar will be worn by the sub/slave. And although the collar is physically owned by the wearer, the collar will commonly have an "owner" as being their master/dom. In that way their owner can exert control over the sub.

►  I don't want a collar, i'm not into that!

You don't have to have one, that's just a common item for the community that are among the most prevalent users.  There are MANY other RLV enabled toys out there.

►   I've heard of "RLV Shared Folders". Does this mean others can steal my inventory?

 In a word, NO!

When using RLV you can create a folder in inventory called #RLV. Scripted objects can let others see the content of this folder #RLV and folders below it. Objects can also offer you inventory that will go into this location. This gives (people using) objects with access to these folders the ability to force you to wear items. For example, during role play they might find a set of handcuffs and force you to wear them. If you don't put items there they can't access them, simple as that. You are letting people view what you offer. There is no inventory stealing or transfer.

►   If I use RLV, can people steal my money?

NO! No, no and no!  These are the silly paranoid stories touted by the ill informed. Before anyone or any object can take your money, it will pop up a very conspicuous yellow dialog box asking for permissions to debit your account. If you see one of these it doesn't automatically mean it's about to drain your account. It just means that it is seeking the permission to take money if it needs to. The question really is about trust. Do you trust the person who gave it to you or the creator of the object? Affiliate vendors are one example where debit permissions might be requested. This yellow dialog box will pop up even if you are under RLV restrictions and you will be able to deny permission.

►   Surely griefers target people with RLV?

Maybe, maybe not. It's actually very rare. Being stripped of clothing might occur a bit more as you get caught in traps or whatever. But then, if that's a huge problem, RLV isn't for you.

►   What if I don't like it. How do I get out or escape?

Worst case scenario, relog. There's nothing bad that anyone can do to an RLV user over a normal viewer. If you relog with RLV features disabled, you can detach any locked products and there will no longer be any restrictions in force. Some products may save their locked setting and restrictions even though you can reset scripts. Others will lose their restrictions when you reset scripts. This is up to how the scripted item is implemented. Sassy's products will retain RLV restrictions upon relog back into RLV. And it is common for most relays to also allow you to be recaptured immediately on login. So if no help is nearby and you want to escape permanently... You need to detach the products after relogging with the RLV features disabled.

RLV will NOT damage your PC, it will not require you to re-install Windows to escape and yes i've heard all claims before.

I've long held that RLV should stand for Really Lotsmorefun Viewer.

Excellent and thorough description of RLV's abilities and limits. Given the experience you have with the system, I shouldn't be surprised :)

I always thought it'd be smart for (non-Adult) RPG sims to get into RLV. It'd be ideal for enforcing in-game limits on characters; things like locked doors, magical transport, selectively removing (and granting) the ability to teleport, fly, cam around or rez new objects and of course, if the scenario demands it, binding, gagging or blindfolding a captive.

I guess there's still a lack of awareness of what it can & can't do. This, along with the association with BDSM, the misinformation & scare stories, has kept it as something of a niche product, at least in the way it is used. More's the pity.

 I love that description.

I use RLV mainly that way.  I use the Open Collar scripts in my own object I wear invisibly.

I use it to teleport all the time.  I have all my favorite LM's added so all it takes for me is a couple of key strokes.  So all I need to do is type pjtp <name of place> and I'm on my way.  No muss, no fuss, no chocolate mess.

One mistake in the viewer list: Singularity is a v1 viewer, not v2.

I really love the limits RLV gives, makes my RP so much more realistic.

I like the 'Really Lotsmorefun Viewer' nick.  :smileyvery-happy:

I still call it 'Restrained LIfe Viewer' because I think the new name is wrong (or absolute BS)

it is my *life* which is being restricted, not my *love*.

And yes OP, remember, when you want to get out of something just log into normal SL viewer.

To try to help you out, I did once hear of  a hud that would someone grope someone's breasts WITHOUT her having or using RLV or a relay or anything. You couldn't take her clothes or tp any of these things that RLV will allow a person to do, but for a new female who doesn't know what's going on I would suspect it would be enough to upset her.

The hud in question worked off of having accepted a prior "harmless" animation. Like a handshake or hug or something. Then later you were able to fondle the person basically because their info was somehow "saved" inside it.  I have no idea about the technicalities in an item like that. But my advice would be not to accept even "meaningless" animations from people she doesn't know and trust.

I am not sure how you are defining "grope."  If you mean an animation that gives the appearance of a "groping,"  that wouldn't be hard to do.  Just use the same system that allows hugs or kisses but substitute a groping animation.

That has nothing to do with RLV.

I will agree, accepting unknown invites from unknown people can result in some frivolous things.

Now if a girl had an animation to "check my package," that I might find interesting.

And I might even accept it.  ;)

SinfulPrince

After this happened to her in a sandbox I went looking in the marketplace to see what I could find and i found several that let you grope etc someone without there permission or so the discriptions seemed to say all without the use of RLV I included that when I started this thread so people knew where I was coming from etc I let her read an article on RLV and she wanted more information on it so we could decide if this was something we wanted to try or not hence this thread asking for that info and peoples opinions good or bad so we knew what we might be getting into

Thanks for the reply

Exactly, that's what it was , it moved the female within range and had a groping animation.

And no it has nothing to do with RLV I thought the gent just wanted to figure out how his girl had an unpleasant experience and might've presumed it was RLV at work if indeed she didn't have RLV enabled.

Now if you just want an opinion on RLV, then I'll offer that sl just wouldn't be as much fun without it :P

Aside from the "fun" aspect, I'm one that it frustrates the heck out of not to be able to touch someone just cuz I want to. I'm spoiled coming from an MMOG where I could, so constantly have this sort of cyber phantom limb thing go on LOL - I keep reachin mentally for the button to do "x" (drag, hold, carry....) and its not a built in thing . RLV helps me not have that bizaar severed hand mental state. And I realize it is how it is because 9000 d***wads would make peoples experience horrific for them, it just  Makes me nuts to have to "ask" my regular or "its a given" type partners this and that. Just not natural. So RLV alleviates it.

Just tell your girl to be mindful of her relay(s)  if she's in a public place is all. (turn em off or take em off or whatever)

And, quite apart from the restrictions RLV can apply (which can be fun, in a frustrating kind of way, and a good part of BDSM play, making it more realistic), RLV can be used in more benign ways to help you out in your travels.
For example I'm running a small script that automagically changes my active group depending on the sim I'm in. It can be used to automagically change outfits as well, using the same principle, or simply to allow changing outfits easily for those without a modern viewer where you can just use the appearance window to do that.

In Firestorm Viewer>Preferences>Firestorm>General make sure the box next to "Allow Remote Scripted Viewer Controls (RLVa)" is unchecked and restart the viewer.

A simple test is to ask a friend (or have an alt) IM you with the one word, @version  in a line on its own.

If you see that, then you've not got RLV running.  If you have, you don't see anything but your friend gets a reply telling them what version of RLV you are using.

Well if the collar has a  database they can be the permant owner (no matter what collar of that brand you choose) of that person. Icontrol uses this method. The problem then becomes getting another owner... of course turning of rlv and switching brands works for this obviousally. At least most of the time that I know of.

I bought some LRV items some time ago, forgot about them, but decided to try it out again in this sim I found, with both a game room, a forest and a maze. I had updated my browser recently(Firestorm), made sure the RLV button was cheched, updated my then outdated open collars and put one on. But it seems to work only partionally.

There is a globe where it can search for RLV relays and it never find anything. None of the capture things find them either. Nothing will capture me if I walk in the maze or the forest either. I can sit on them and see the animation and the script, but I never get captured and the stand up buttons work fine. If I put myself on a script that says you're bound for 2 min or whatever I can just stand up again whenever I want. Walking in the forest I got a message about a snake I didn't see before it was to late, so I guess it can locate me, but apparently not the RLV relay. Nothing happend with the snake and I didn't see it after either.

In the game room, there is several capture things wich I can get on and off at will. However there is also some cages where you either have to solve a puzzle to get out or you play hangman and if you loose you are locked for a certain amount of time. These works. If I go into them I can't get out before I solved the puzzle or waited the time. Also there is a teddy bear, that you can get a teddy leash for and when he grabbed it worked properly, and I couldn't get out of the leash or of the things he put me on.

I also tried xcite hud and collars, but that didn't work either.  I haven't tried with other people as owners since I just discovered it, but I thought that shouldn't be needed. I figured I should go and visit open collars again and try a new one in case the updating didn't work properly, but I think they have moved it becouse I just ended up in thin air.

Anyone have an ide of what I'm doing wrong? (And maybee a new link to open collar if it exist)

You need an RLV Relay. There are many available; if you want things to grab you, set it to Auto, Open or Ask.

OpenCollar still exists, Search in your viewwer for 'Temple of the Collar' or OpenCollar.

I thought came automatic with open collar. Guess not. I'll play a bit with the settings when I get home to see if I can get it to work.

You're correct, there's a relay inside the OpenCollar. It requires enabling, upon initialisation the relay is disabled ; you can enable it inside the 'RLV' sub-menu of the collar.

Hmm, still can't get it to work. I went into the RLV, there was just an option to turn it on and off. It was on, if I turned it on and off I got a message saying " Attempting to enable Restrained Love Viewer functions.  RestrainedLife viewer v1.20 or higher is required for all features to work.* But still nothing recognized the relay.

So I tried setting it at open access, but that didn't help either. I also brought in an alt and put her as an owner to see if that helped, but still nothing. My alt had no problems using the collar and all it's functions,(atleast not the random selection I chose). So the relay is obviously there, but why won't it show up on the things in the room and the relay checker.

Edit: Nevermind. I searched for open collar and found their new place. Deleted my old collars and got new once, and not it worked perfectly :) Guess that updater wasn't good enough to update it fully.

My wife and I have been messing about in SL and experimenting with some RLV stuff and iControl. We had to buy a new iControl and get a new remote, and most of the features are working. However, I am unable to "force sit" which means it's very difficult to put her in certain devices without her cooperation (which sort of lessens the impact). I can Animate her, dress and undress her, bind her, I just can't force interactions in the world.

Perchance might any one have some idea what we are doing wrong?
