Question

There are many programs available for 3D modelling.  Some, like Blender, are free.  Others, like Maya, are rather expensive.  All require a lot of talent and practice before you can expect to create objects that are as good as the mesh objects you can buy from Marketplace and in-world shops.  If you have the time and patience, though, but it's a fun and rewarding pursuit.

To begin, read these few basic procedural instructions >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Mesh and then spend some time familiarizing yourself with mesh by watching some video tutorials.  Some good ones to start with are at http://blog.machinimatrix.org/category/mesh/quests/ .   If you're ultimately interested in making mesh clothing, a good one to begin with is http://blog.nalates.net/2012/05/20/second-life-mesh-clothes-blender-2-6-setup-2012-tutorial/

Once you get a sense of what's involved, the best thing to do is download and install one of the modeling programs (I like Blender myself), and just start playing.  You'll find that there are several groups in SL that focus on modeling mesh, including an active Blender group.
