What are the biggest Role Playing Groups in Second Life?

Recommended Posts

Gor is the biggest by far, 350+ groups with their own sims, second would probably be Urban followed by SciFi groups. Its very difficult sometimes to define them or group them, each group splits into different styles and settings.

It depends on what you want to experience, there are military, police, sex, family, sci fi, urban, wild west, medieval, Victorian, school, and many many more styles and settings in SL roleplay. Use the search facility here or inworld to find what interests you and go explore!, most groups are only too happy to have new people join them.

As Leia said, Gor is popular, as is urban.  They are probably closer to equal, but the urban is spread out among many different group, some quite large, where gor is (somewhat) tied together.  And depending on how strictly or loosely you define each can change the numbers a bit.  For example, instead of gor, saying fantasy BDSM increases that side a bit, but saying Strict gor, or by the books as they call it, and that side shrinks.  School RP is somewhat large as well, though a lot of it is PG, which doesn't sit well for certain types.

But the real answer is that nearly any RP is out there somewhere, and looking for the biggest does not mean the best, and it most assuredly does not mean the best for you.  You should start by looking for what interests you specifically, rather than what is popular.  Once you get to a modest size, good RP can and does happen, and generally doubling or tripling or more that size doesn't really change the quantity of good RP, it often lowers it a bit honestly.

How are there 350 groups when only 80 members are online daily. Are the groups not active?

How do you arrive at 80?

There are close to 80 online at the Gor hub alone most times,  if you go to the Gor Hub out the door is a walk on map with each sim plotted with a world map link, ie. You can see how many people are online at each sim, not kidding, go look for yourself, its an OOC safe area so no need to be afraid. Gor is the biggest RP genre in SL that's an indisputable fact. The number of gor RPers online at any time is in the thousands.

I found some medieval RP groups in the last months, that may be from interest and seem to have increasing popularity.

Time ranges from deep middle age up to the 19th century.

I have participated in many raids that had 50-60 people on sim (counting both raiders and raidees). The largest I ever participated in was 71 people. That's one raid on one sim in GE Gor -- many more people than are generally found in sims in SL Gor, but hell ... there are a LOT of us. there was once an estimate of 50 to 60,000 Gorean roleplayers in Second LIfe, though that number is widely challenged because, hey, alts. Still -- huge RP group, no doubt about it.

If you want something other than Gor...City of Lost Angels and NoR are probably the oldest running post apocalyptic sims in SL. Both have open RP. CoLA uses CCS meter, NoR uses UCE meter. It just depends on what you are looking for and what you want to play.
