Is there any way to upload the two kinds of SL image files from my inventory out to my hard drive?

As long as permissions are set to copy/mod you can open a photo from your inventory and go to File > Save as to save a copy to your local computer.

If the photo does not allow copying, you can always open it and use a tool such as Windows Snipping Tool to grab a copy of it and save to your hard drive.
