What is Gorean?

159 posts in this topic

I have been RPing in Dead End, a modern day sim which treads the normal boundaries: city out of control, police ineffective, etc.

I am considering finding a change of pace, and medieval looks my style. However, not sure what the difference is between Gorean and Medieval. Is there one? What kind of characters are there in Gorean RP? Any tips, explanations, etc. would be much appreciated :)

Also, side question, are their any prehistoric RP sims?

A link with general info

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorean

You may find several variations of Gore in SL, some hold to principles, others do not.

Gore is not the traditional Kings and Queens of Medieval times; although, that to, can be found in SL.

Sorry, I am not aware of a Region with dinosaurs.

What is Gorean?

Well, the question of Gor is not easy to explain in a few words. Certainly it is easy to say Gor is the planet from John Normans Novels about another world, the earths twin planet. Gor also means HomeStone.

But to say in a few words, what Gor and gorean lifestyle means and for which people this community exists, here some guidelines:

  • Men are men and woman are woman, they are not equal!
  • There is a natural order existing along men and woman, human, animals, strong and weak… each one has a place in the complete whole
  • slavery is a part of the society, a part of life
  • The life of the female slave is a consistent, totalistic and indissoluble whole
  • the gorean philosophy does exist, it is a philosophy for humans, living on earth, not only fiction in a few books
  • Gor is not one way, there are dozens of possible ways, all could be gorean, but Gor is always full of honor and respect for nature and for each creature
  • Gor includes different cultures and folks, different way of life, different people

Gor is another idea of society, it is different to most earths life, but in fact Gor is not really new: in some part of this world, you find very similar societies and cultures, at least they were existing in the past.

Gor is more than the Master/slave part. But the Master/slave part is probably the most interesting part. To understand, why a woman submits to men, why men like to own woman, why Master/slave can reach a really fulfilled life, one need to understand the complete whole about Gor. For this it makes sense to read the books and to talk to different people and finally to find ones own place, depending on strengths and weaknesses, gender, experiences and skills and of course on ones own honor and respect. Even if a Master has power over his slave, he respects her as the creature, she is. A slave has no rights, not even to own a name, but it could be (not must be) that a Master does risk his own life for his slave. It is a question of honor, loyalty and deep respect for each other. Master and slave relationship means totally trust, deepest connection between human and absolutely harmony with nature and universe.

this hack writer named John Norman has written 30 some violent mysogynistic novels about this world called Gor thats directly on the other side of the sun from Earth & is ruled by these giant intelligent insects called Priest Kings who are afraid humans will find out about them & nuke em so they keep humans @ a primitive technological level militarily but not in other ways .. meanwhile theres these carnivorous aliens called Kurs that want to eat people so humans have to fite them w/ swords & crossbows cuz the Priest Kings wont let them have guns .. the warriors ride around on giant hawks called Tarns & swoop down on women & carry them off to be sex slaves .. there are giant weasels called Sleens that the men feed women to if the women dont please them sexually .. the scenes are variously themed on ancient Rome Persia Scandinavia etc .. Norman writes poorly & his novels are ridiculous yet trogs eat em up & base RP on them .. i cant think of muchuv anything more stupid

First time, but I have to agree with you. I don't know why its so popular (Ok, seeing what a hype Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey and Justin Bieber were....nevermind). I think the whole thing can be named Slave/Master with lots of wannabe fantasy decoration. :cattongue:

I would prefer real medival roleplay over Gor, but thats just me.

Appearances can be deceptive, but to each their own...with over 350 sims and thousands of people online every day it is as valid a RP community as any other. Personally I go gorean a few times a week, Its fun, just plain fun, nothing serious.

methinks JeanneAnne is a tad jealous of John Norman's success :)

"Hack writer"? He's a successful author of over 30 books in the Gor series, and several dozen others, the first of which have been in print near continuously for decades. He's a professor of philosophy whose ideas have a worldwide following numbering in the tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands).

Do I agree with everything he writes? No. Do I think he has some very good points? Yes. Do I think Gor exists? No. Do I think many people on earth would find themselves as described by Norman when confronted with such a society? Possibly.

That said, SL Gor is in many if not most sims a perversion of the books, of the lore put down and the philosophy created by John Norman. While they celebrate the idea of total submission of women to men, they forget that men have honour and value their women, and that free women do indeed exist and can rise to high office (or many of the sims forget that).
Can't blame the philosopher and author for how his audience interprets his writings.

Measuring quality of an object by its economic success is a way that leads to wrong results...or do people get the Nobel Prize for literature because their books sold so well? (50 shades of grey sold well, but the quality is questionable). Or look at the music industry, would you compare Justin Bieber with real talents from the past?

So, by what do you want to measure a good RP setting? By the number of sims it has in SL? I wouldn't do that.

Also for an advice its useless to tell that the author himself isn't as dumb as the content of his books or how people use it. What really matters is, as you already said, how the RP is in SL.

I never said his books have high literary quality. They're pulp fiction, quick easy reading adventure novels, and designed to be just that, a platform for the author to get some income and get his theories spread to those who won't read weighty literary treatises.

In all that they're highly successful. I enjoy them for what they are, adventure novels. I enjoy Shakespeare for what it is, literary masterpieces. Maybe if people stop claiming that for something to be successful and have appeal it needs to be "art" or "literature" they'd start losing their snobbery.

There are a few things I can tell you about Gorean roleplayers.

1. About 1 in 100 will give you a good answer like you got here if you ask in-world. In fact, after literally a year asking anyone who told me they played in a gor sim to explain it to me, I found this thread educational. The other 99% seem split between basically regarding it as mideival bdsm, and giving arrogant answers like "read the book." without giving any details. This gives me the impression that gorean sims are not exactly a great place to be. I won't step foot into their IC areas because of it. I can't imagine a setting where elitists who refuse to even tell you what the sims are about and people looking for just another way to have cybersex can coexist like that without a ton of OOC drama.

2. Goreans have the best toys! All kinds of primitive weapons to play with, huds, interesting clothing... their shops are definitely worth a visit, even if I don't feel that their rp areas are.

Gor is about women being slaves to men?

I cannot imagine any redeeming quality in that.

Well, I was once in a F/f relationship. My partner was hardly a slave but she did wear a collar. The leash came in handy when we went shopping. Without it, she'd likely have wandered down an aisle while I was trying to reverse engineer something in the store. The thought of that brings back nightmarish memories of getting lost in the supermarket, screaming "Mommy, Mommy... where are you?!?!?!". Nobody in SL wants to see me doing that.

Does that qualify as a redeeming quality for a leash?

Whatever.

The notion that many people subscribe to a philosophy that requires females to be subservient slaves to men does not sound like anything that should be thought of as having some kind of value.

I know if it is roleplay it is just pretend and I know that there are lifestyles and cultures where being a slave is a turn on or whatnot, but a planet and philosophy where women are slaves and property is not anything that I think should be touted as having some kind of philosophical merit.

I read one of Norman's books. Well, I tried to read it. I skimmed through and found a paragraph worth keeping in a dresser drawer. Or maybe it was a sentence. As I recall, the story was just misogynistic scaffolding for little vignettes of soft porn. If I wanted porn, I'd have found something more efficient. It's hard to get excited in your sleep.

ETA: Misogyny might be the wrong description. Misanthropy, or even misandry is closer, but that was unintentional.

ETA2: I've a gorean friend who's relationship with her "master" sounds about as conventional as most relationships I see. Same trials and tribulations, nothing akin to the sort of true power imbalance some Goreans claim, but they like their rituals.

Mmmm... well, I have never read a book of his. I never stabbed myself in the eye with a fork either, but I bet I would not like it.

Any of those misses is fine with me, I'm going to have to look them all up anyhow.

What I don't understand are the replies to the OP. He was clearly asking for information, which was explained to him by myself and others. There really is no need to post beyond that. Your views expressed a clear misunderstanding of the genre and the people within it. Nobody is asking you to participate, you could run this thread to a thousand pages and it wont stop the genre or the people within it from having there fun and frankly I expect better behavior from a person with a helper tag.

Yes, step back for a moment and consider, what was the OP asking? The genre is a valid RP community which people enjoy. Its not inconceivable that people might use this section of the forum looking for information about RP in gor. The best way to find out about the genre in SL is to enter it and see for yourself.

There is no way anyone can be forced into the slave role, every one of those people is their by choice and enjoy their time playing that role. There is absolutely nothing stopping you entering OOC or as a free person. Nobody is going to capture you or "take advantage" of you without your consent.

GorSL has many positive points, from the quality of the builds, the items and fashion, the love, yes I said love, and camaraderie. The humor and friendship. And most of all the fun that is SL Gor

Also just for the record yesterday I posted a link to this thread on the GorSL website. You might be interested in the replies there.

I know Gor is big, and I know it is Roleplay, and I know I cannot stop it, nor do I wish to. What I cannot understand is how a woman would think there is anything good about a philosophy that takes away our self. Enslavement does not fit into how things should be.

I have read about how oppressed we were even in this country not too long ago, not enslaved, but not allowed to vote, not able to serve in the military, not able to have equal jobs. Even today, we aren't really equal, although that is going away. I know we are different than men, I get that, but to think it is ok to be considered property?

That is why Gor is disliked by some, not because the people that participate in it are bad people, some of them are the nicest most caring persons you will ever meet, but the philosophy, the enslavement of women, that does not sit well with me.

I am sorry I offended you.
