Downloading SL

I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and my graphics display is ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT.  Am I able to download and run SL?

If so, how do I get started after choosing an avatar; and can I alter the looks and clothes, etc. of my avatar?

That is a very low end graphics card.  If it runs SL at all, it will be on low settings, and you won't get very good performance.  For more detailed information, see here:  https://secondlife.com/my/support/system-requirements/?lang=en-US

You can certainly download and try it.  Click the Download Second Life link at the bottom of this page.  Install and run the software.

Yes, you can alter your avatar in an almost infinite number of ways.  For free, even...although lots of people do spend money on clothes and various accessories.

Im a sorry to say that you will certainly not be able to run SL or any V3 based viewer with such a system. I have the same as yours at my office and all I can (barely) use is the old 1.23 viewer which is no longer available for download. If your Mac is a PowerPC, that means you won't be able to run SL at all. If it is Intel-based, you may give a try to some third party viewers such as Phoenix, but do not expect too much: as Lindal said, if it works at all, the performances will be very poor. It's maybe time to order a new Mac for your next birthday or be very nice to your banker and ask for a loan with a big smile.
