The Free Linden home is like a lottery. You get what the selection process issues to you.

Also, Linden Homes do not share borders with each other and even if they did, you may not combine the parcels they are on.

You have limited Land/Group options on a Linden Mainland Home.

Option: If you both want to have a nice 1024 sqm parcel on the mainland, you can do this:

1) Make a Land Group and both of you join it as owners. Cost: L$100

2) You both commit your 512 sqm allowance to the group.

3) You walk hand in hand on the mainland and buy an affordable 1024 sqm parcel using the "Buy for Group" option. Cost: from L$1000 to as high as a silly overpriced amount.

4) You live happily ever after on your 1024 sqm parcel with the 234 prims allowance. [till you need to expand because of your partners growing addiction to raising meroos :P]

A small postscript to Karen's excellent answer:

Groups receive a 10% bonus on tier.  So, if you buy your land for a group, you can own up to 1024 +102 = 1126 square meters.  If each of you donates your 512 square meters of tier to the group, you will pay no tier.  (You do have to initially purchase the land, of course.)
