When using chat, I can't use the /me.. when I type it, nothing appears. None of my friends know what the deal is either.... How can I make this work?? Yes I do write it correctly.

/me whatever I want.

It DOES work in IM's.. just not public chat. :(

The syntax is

/me Your message goes here.

Notice that /me is at the start of the line, and there is a space after it.  If that's what you're doing and it still isn't working, add a note to your question and we'll take a guess at what's going on.  Just click on the Options link in the upper right corner of your question and select EDIT. Please do NOT start a new thread.

Assuming you are typing it correctly as per Rolig's answer, take a look at your gestures.  I've seen this before where someone has a gesture that is triggered with a  /me    In that case, the gesture overrides the /me used for emotes.   Best place to look is in your Gestures tool (assuming the SL Viewer 3)  If you find a gesture with a /me trigger, either delete it or edit it to something else and then your /me should work for emotes.
