Question

Hey, so a friend of mine got some of that new mesh clothing, and when I look at him, all I see are the things that aren't mesh... the rest doesn't load up (it's invisible, so all I see of him are arms, legs, and a head). So, I clicked hardware skinning and hit apply, then Okay and clicked out of preferences. Basic shaders was enabled, too. However, nothing happened. Then, I went back into preferences and it said that hardware skinning was no longer selected! I kept going back and enabling the necessary elements, but every time, nothing works. It keeps getting deselected.

I don't really know what to do; why does it keep deselecting it? Is there anything I can do? I tried to use that other browser, Firestorm, but it won't even load up for me, so... and neither will the SL Viewer; it has the same issue as Firestorm.

Right now, I'm using Phoenix Viewer..

I'm guessing that your graphics quality slider tries to default to Low.  If it does that, you won't be able to set Basic Shaders or Hardware Skinning.  Your viewer may have decided that your computer can't handle a higher graphics quality well, so it keeps dropping back to that default when you relog.  (That may also be why you can't run Firestorm, which is more demanding than Phoenix.) You can try forcing it to a higher quality setting and see if it stays there.  If that doesn't work, go to PreferencesGraphics -> Rendering and disable both of the Alpha Mask Rendering options.

If even that doesn't work - and make sure you try all other options first! - then in the top menu bar, open Advanced → Debug Settings, find MeshMaxConcurrentRequests and gradually increase the value. It is recommended that you not go over 64; try to keep it less.

Assuming that you are using the Phoenix Viewer that can see mesh *wink* and that it is the power of your computer that is the issue, you might try Singularity which can see mesh and is reportedly much easier on your system.

Adding a bit of my own personal experience re. MeshMaxConcurrentRequest. At times I have had to increase the value to WAY more than 64. Often, this makes mesh show up. At which point, I've reduced it again. I rarely go lower than 100, though.

Also, try to reduce the draw distance to 0 (or as low as you can), then increase again to the normal level.
