Ok, I've been thinking about doing this for some time now, but I've run into a problem and I need some help. I'm trying to make a gecko skin texture using a skin I bought on the marketplace, but when I bring it up in GIMP the texture looks too large as far as the scale detail goes. Is there any way to add more detail to the texture in GIMP and not mess up the texture overall? And I was looking for some good lizard head UV maps to use, any recommendations?

Not sure what you are using to edit the UV map. but,

If Using a UV edititor like one in blender or what ever, with your UV map imported, import/ad the texture to the map and scale the map up which will make the large geko texture smaller in scale which keeps the high detail of the geko texture

Not sure if gimp can do this to the UV map

You can ad as much detail as you want, the trick is scaling up the UV map so that it dwarfs the texture you edited in gimp.

I wouldnt scale the texture it self down. Keep its high quality detail,. if not, thats when you run into detailing problems

yw You will notice also if you scale the UV map up too big you can end up with tiling Depending on the nature of the texture tiling can be fine for like fur or fabric textures that do not have a patterend print. If you click on the Image Maping tab and change it from repeat to clip that will turn off tiling

You also have other options if scaling the uv map will be too much, you can scale the image inside blender to make it look  smaller or larger on your model. So, say if you had a fish texture that had scales. the scales look too big. you can use the  scale settings in the Mapping tab of the texture properties to make them look smaller. See image below . Larger numbers will make your texture look smaller on the model
