You should edit your question and provide more details about your system and how the "not open" exactly looks like, for instance do you get error messages and if yes, what exactly do they say? Or does it crash during startup or or or... Statements like "something does not work" are unfortunately not really helpful in diagnosing a problem.

Check if anything is written into the logfile that may give a hint what's happening: C:\Users\<Your Windows username>\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\Logs\SecondLife.log

AppData is a hidden folder, so you might change the Windows Explorer settings to show hidden folders

So... Have been digging in the code a bit. From what I see, it might almost be some problem showing the splash screen. Between the location from where the last log message is written to the splash screen is nothing that should actually crash the viewer on a mint installation (not unless you start the viewer with the --crashonstartup parameter). Have you checked if there are updated graphic card drivers available?

The four files that are on the log as to be loaded all come up as cannot find file further down the log, and my user_settings folder is empty, could something have gone wrong during the installation which ment files that should have gone into the user_settings folder did not get written there?

It's most definitely a driver issue then. Current viewer version has undergone major rework on the rendering pipeline that often has caused trouble already. If the laptop has an nvidia or ATI chip, you should have a look if there's some way to install a reference driver from their website directly instead of the customized driver from the laptop manufacturer.

Try different driver versions. If the problem won't solve, you should file a JIRA at LL about that and use a different viewer (version) until it gets fixed. In the LL viewer you can disable the auto-update in preferences so it won't download the most recent update.

The SL JIRA is LL's ticket system for bugs. Click on the link in my previous comment. It will open the JIRA for your issue. You should scroll to the end and append details about your system. I already updated the JIRA with the affected version and re-opened it, so you need to provide some details about your system.

The auto-update settings are in preferences, configuration tab and there is a dropdown box for software update settings. Nevertheless you can also try different viewers to see if they work properly. You can get a list of available viewers here: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/TPVD
