cartoon-ish and/or handdrawn look.

How do photographers get the handdrawn and/or cartoonish look in Photoshop.. I have tried filters, editing, and more.. but to no avail.. Can anyone tell me exactly what they do..

make a copy layer of your image

filter / blur / guassinn blurr 1.5 (or play with setting)

then set blurred layer transparency to around 30%

Layers, Layers, oh...Did I mention Layers. A steady hand, a keen eye, lots of coffee, and last but not least....

 

A good pair of trust Hair Clippers ( well after all, with you pulling out of hair during your new creation adventures, it's best just to save yourself the trouble and go bald ahead of time) and once your practice grows, your hair will grow back with it :matte-motes-big-grin-wink:

 

P.S. Don't forget a good strong dose of your own opinion and selfconfidence too, you'll be creating in no time

Your title says it, they draw lol.

Play with layers and their blending modes, and just draw light and dark areas. Use new layer for everything you add, save few copies at different stages of your work - always psd files so you can easily go back and continue from there. Don't forget to organize and name your layers. If you don't use tablet then learn to work with paths. And prepare to loose many hours before you get something you like;)

You might also try zooming in your camera before taking the picture (ctrl 0); it flattens the shot and makes it much less 3D and more "cartoony".

All photos in the links you provided have either a blur or "penthouse" effect. Which is when you duplicate the model's layer in PS and then gaussian blur it slightly (where you don't completely wipe out the facial features) , then change the duplicated layer's blending mode to Overlay or Soft Light. Then go to Adjustments> Vibrance and turn down the vibrance a bit till you're satisfied so it's not too burned.

I might want to add that in the second link, the artist drew these highlight lines on various areas of the model. That is done by using the pen tool and "stroking" it with a brush that has a faded ends (faded stroke).
