logged in after update just get dead box

as said above loaded update now all I get is a box split down middle black one side grey other and cannot get rid of it without shutting down comp and site doesn't open

This is usually due to using outdated ATI video drivers or Catalyst 12.3. Refer to this SL JIRA. Disabling Aero *may* also help solve this. Information on how to do that is given here.
