How do you do that in real life? Go out to places and talk to people hanging around there! You could use the Destination Guide to find such places for instance.

You can go somewhere by walking, flying, or teleporting.  You have a Destinations button on your viewer screen that is a shortcut to many popular places in SL, so try that for a start.  After that, try opening your map view (the little icon on the task bar that looks vaguely like a folded map) and scrolling out a bit to see where you find green dots.  Each green dot is another person like you.  Double click on a nearby spot and you'll TP there.
