Why does my cage hate me?

Lol, I'm not sure why but whenever I CTRL+J to join them together it doesn't give me the desired effect and when creating bone from heat is done so I can so play around with the pose ..

This happens: (Watch the center of the cage)

I had to divide it because I did one side then pasted it and mirrored, used CTRL+J to join them although didn't really do anything as can clearly been seen..

Blender 2.59 any suggestions? :O

The two meshes are joined, but the verices are not. In edit mode look in the mesh menu, then in the vertices menu, and select "remove doubles" or equivalent. That will join the vertices that meet in the middle of the two sides. You may need to fix the weighting, one side to the next, either through the create from bone heat or manually.
