Technology Improvements for Q1 Including Raising Group Limit to 42

As we begin 2011, I want to share the progress that we’re making on several important technology enhancements that I discussed in my last post.  As I mentioned, we are focused on improving the overall performance of Second Life while addressing some long standing limitations such as  raising group limits, improving the chat system, and reducing lag.

Group Limits Raised to 42 Today

In October, we committed to increase group limits from the current 25 up to 40 in the first quarter of 2011. As of today, group limits have been raised to 42! To add groups beyond the previous limit of 25, you must be using Viewer  2.4 (or a more recent version). And if you’re still using Viewer 1.23, or a third-party viewer based on Viewer 1.23 code, then you can add more groups in Viewer 2.4 and they will still be accessible when you switch back to Viewer 1.23.

That said, if there is an unexpected load, then we may need to lower the group limitation to maintain acceptable performance levels across the grid. If we decide to do that, then any Residents who have up to 42  groups will not lose their memberships. But, other Residents will not be able to exceed the new limit.

Group Chat System Will Launch Gridwide By March 31st

We were set to deploy a prototype of the new group chat system in December, but last minute licensing issues were found with our chosen open source library. Now that a solution is in place, we expect to have the prototype available by the end of this month and an industry standard and high performing group chat system available by the end of this quarter.

Performance Improvements When Teleporting and Crossing Regions

As you teleport, or cross regions, all of your avatar data (often a very  large amount of data) needs to be processed by both source and destination regions. In order to streamline this process, we are now compressing avatar information, making your teleports and region crossings faster and more reliable. In fact, we’ve found that teleport failures, due to avatar complexity, have dropped 40%. See the graph below for a more detailed view showing how much we’ve shortened region crossing time.

Viewer 2.5 Beta Releasing Soon

We will soon launch the latest version of the Second Life Viewer -- Viewer 2.5 Beta. In addition to more performance and stability improvements, we’ve added enhanced web-based profiles, accessible both on the web and in the Viewer. And, if you wish, you can even connect your Second Life profile to other social identities including Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn! You will also have the option in Preferences to choose your first inworld destination from the saved Landmarks in your Favorites Bar. This is very handy when you need to get to a specific destination quickly.

Also, one of the most important new features added to Viewer 2.4 was the auto-updater capability. If you're using Viewer 2.4 or higher, then you won’t be inconvenienced by the notification and download process when we release a new Viewer.

Planning to Implement Significant Grid Infrastructure Enhancements in 2011

We’re planning significant grid infrastructure enhancements throughout the year including technologies to speed server-side rendering (SSR) and server virtualization (web and simulator services). We are also exploring new storage and asset delivery systems. Some of the benefits will not always be noticeable, but they are foundational platform changes that set the stage for rapid performance and scalability improvements. We will continue to keep you updated as we roll out these systems.

I’m pleased with the progress that we made across the platform last year and I'm looking ahead to newer technologies that we will deploy in 2011 to enhance your Second Life experience. As always, I'll be watching for your feedback and thank you for making Second Life such an amazing place.

So, raising the arbitrary group limit to 42 and finally learning how to compress data before transfer is what passes for technological improvements these days?

You guys are an unstoppable force of progress! Kind of like global warming. I'm sure in a few million years you'll have a real impact on things.

Where is the like button?!  Totally agree with everything you said, and what many others have said. I use a tpv and absolutely refuse to use viewer 2x from LL.  Go back to the old interface!  I understand the coding in 2x is more powerful and server friendly but did you really have to change how everything LOOKED and its basic functionality?  I get you want to draw new people to SL, but what about keeping those of us that have been with you for YEARS happy?

Love the 42 groups.  Love the improved sim crossing.  Scrap voice morph, kids on the main grid and user names!  Those are just trouble waiting to happen and it really takes away from the unique identity of users.  Don't want to compile a monthly or quarterly list of last names anymore?  Fine, but make new users register with a first AND last name of their choice.  I am so SICK of seeing 'Resident" beind names.  Resident Evil!

Looking forward to see how much "performance and lag" is being resolved in this new update. I find quite interesting how SL is connecting with fb, twitter, and LinkID. This might be a good tool to make sure people are what they are, but at the same time it would open a window to stalkers

Interesting issue, the Display names.  Having now used it for a while I find it most confusing when trying to make out who is whom in a crowded club or even when watching RP.  There is just too much information on the screen.  Not so bad if the resident uses their first name as the display name like 'Jenny Gordonbennet' becomes 'Jenny', but when she decides to call herself 'Angel of the Night' you stand no chance!!

Another 'improvement' that was not needed?

Excellent to hear about the increase of the cap limit on inworld groups! Excellent to hear about improved stability in TPing as well. Keep up the great work

If you plan on reducing lag its might be worth taking a note, that sculpts and scripts are currently some the major lag factors. Especially if you have several people in one spot running them like AO - scripts and other script effects.

EDIT: also would be nice if chance for increasing homestead with 5 or 10 more people as limit would be nice, seeing as if you have rentals which alot tend to with non commercial homesteads, 20 people limit can sometime seem very small if someone wants to throw a party, at their house when their other tenants online in sim.

So. . .   When will we get a viewer that doesn't crash or lockup all the time?  And when will we get an inventory management window that doesn't actively fight the user and lose items?  This kind of basic stuff I've been waiting six and a half years for, and still counting.

These are marvelous features.. thank you.

Please add to your list of technology advances the availability of a script editor that does not freeze the viewer for over a minute when loading large scripts and a notecard editor that manages to keep its visible cursor location and character insertion location in the same place.  These problems are documented in the jira and awaiting action.

Well , no help at all for Airline Bussiness's, trying to fly through the sims in Blakes Seas, Avatar crossing may be improved,  ((dont know yet, my snowglobe suddenly became so unstable I couldnt use it any more, but this new Phoenix, is too much strain on my old computor and wont even rez land, only the water, until 5 mins has past, then land and buildings may appear))      so cant use SL anyway at momment.:(

NO mention was made of civil aviation jetliners passengers,  or ships carrying passengers, If falling out, or attachments keep going offworld , I stay away from sl, because im not putting 16K into a 65k Airport Complex  each week, if flights dont get to their defined destinations, a real airline would be broke within a week.

Unlike people Who come here for fun, a lot of us, run an airport, marina, sublet terminals etc to make a profit, or at least cover land tiers.

Shame about Blue Mars, but their land pricing structure was strange to say the least?

the problem with Blue Mars was that you had to download a DVD sized dataset before you could do anything.  They should have sold a DVD to Blue Mars alongside WoW in stores, and the basic data for the basic cities was right there on your hard drive.  Changes to the cities, like shop ownership and links out to other cities, would be a small dataset that would supercede the one on the DVD.  But 95% of the data would never change and you'd be in Blue Mars instantly rather than waiting hours for a download (if you are lucky).

Individual cities should have been accessible from main cities via travel tube.  You then ride the tube while the data for the private city loads.  It would again be much less than the huge datasets required. The tube ride would also be part of the flavor of the experience then rather than boring teleports.

Blue Mars was almost empty because even people like me with fat pipes couldn't get in.  I even had a Developer bit -- fat lot of good that did me.  Tried it several times and sadly concluded that as bad as LL was making SL, at least SL could still be accessed and used.

I have the snowglobe viewer version 1.42 and it still will not let me add groups past 25 limit, so i am just guessing that there is no 42 group raise for the snowglobe viewer since there is no information on it what so ever, only info on phoenix and the newest version of secondlife. Is a shame would be lovely for snowglobe to have such a raise in group space since snowglobe is the most stable viewer.

It says "25 maximum" but it will let you add more, unless it's working differently on your computer for some reason.

Am on Phoenix 818--can add myself to groups up to 42  -----BUT-----if I have more than 25 and I am invited into a group--I get the error message  too many groups  and have to drop to 24 to be able to accept a new group.  (And yes, I dropped to the 30's when I tried to accept the invitation)

This is a bug ?

Footnote--when group owner opened group--was able to self join making it group 38--it is invites to closed groups over 25 that bork.

One small change that would be nice to see is an in home locker system.  to clarify, make it possinle to move items from yourt inventory to a locker in your home or club, or even one for both.  Tis would lesen the load on your inventory.  it would make it significantly easier to sdort your on hand inventory. Example: in home storage: clothes, home furnishings.. building supplies and even  house rez boxes  CLub Storage: all supplies  used for decorating  clubs & shops.  I think this would be  a great feature

You can already do this to some extent by just storing them in the contents of a prim (one shaped and textured like a wardrobe would be good ).  There are some limitations based on the object's permissions - but you should find it works with most things.

Oh, and don't blame me if you suddenly find that SL ate your wardrobe.

I'm sure there must be a link about it somewhere - maybe someone else can help.

Nice improvements, but a link to FB after all these security scandals? hmm, interesting.

Is LinkedIn now becoming more of a social media than a pure business platform? It's a trend i seem to see continue here now in SL. Not good (!)

This is a technical CYA for Phoenix users; plenty have already gone over 26 groups without enabling in Debug settings. The Phoenix developers are saying please do this as Phoenix is a Snowglobe-based TPV, and changing the setting will ... just ... make sure everything doesn't go blooey (I believe blooey is the technical word).

Adding my thanks for the raised limit; the "extra" 2 groups is some nice lagniappe from the Labs and surely a bit of geek humor? As, come on, we *all* thought the same thing with "42" ... (In case you didn't know, 40 groups *was* the planned limit.)

And the sim crossings: hooray. Not glamorous but necessary.

May I also suggest a link to Photobucket, if you're going to link outside social media? There are photos I have in photobucket that don't transfer well into SL if I try to save an image.
