I’m happy to announce some very exciting news today: Rod Humble is Linden Lab’s new CEO. Our press release is here. You’ll hear from Rod himself after he starts in mid-January, but in the meantime, we wanted to share a brief introduction.

Rod has an impressive depth of experience in developing and leading fun, immersive entertainment experiences that have been great successes. As a 20-year veteran of game development, he’s worked on more than 200 games, and last year, the gaming magazine Edge named him #2 on their annual list of Hot 100 Game Developers. Rod is coming to Linden Lab from Electronic Arts, where he was Executive Vice President and led EA Play, including the best-selling PC game franchise of all time, The Sims. Prior to EA, he was a VP of Product Development at Sony Online Entertainment, where he led the EverQuest Studio.

Rod has a deep appreciation for what makes Second Life special. He’s already been exploring and experimenting inworld to familiarize himself with the pluses and minuses of our product and the successes and challenges faced by our Residents. He’ll officially start at the Lab in mid-January, and I’m excited for us to begin 2011 with fresh perspective, renewed energy, and creativity.

To give you a sense for Rod’s creativity, personality, and perspective, here are few links to his personal creations and a couple of press interviews he’s given:

Press interviews with Rod:

Happy holidays to you all from Linden Lab! We wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year -- it’s going to be a great one for Second Life!

Rod's bio:

In 2009, he was ranked #2 on the annual list of the Hot 100 Game Developers from gaming publication Edge. Prior to his work at Electronic Arts, Humble served as Vice President of Product Development at Sony Online Entertainment for the massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) EverQuest.

Welcome to SL Rod, and good luck.

Here is hoping for improvments in technology, and remember freedom of expression is what makes SL what it is.

Welcome to the Soup, Rodvik! So happy to meet you! Art game legacy FTW! Stars over Half Moon Bay!

Serious contemporary art museums and thinkers the world over are paying attention to new media and virtual worlds, including the Museum of Modern Art in NYC!  Here's an example of a discussion:

Welcome Rod. You will have a very challenging job. SL really needs a good leader and some innovative thinking. Do your best, hold tight and be ready to be criticized to death. This is Second Life.

My best wishes to you. I, as many people, have lots of hope for the future.

Welcome to Second Life.  While your checking out the various communities in SL, come by one of our sea battles in Blake Sea.  It'll also give you a chance to observe vehicle sim xings with the sims under a lot of stress.

Dear Mr. Humble,

When you have 10 minutes to spare I encourage you to watch this video:

There is an unspoken important message in that video.

So welcome to SL Rod. Here's hoping you pay attention to all that's been written above, and let me add my 2 cents worth.

Here's a short list of things to pay attention to:

#1 Customer Support needs fixing first.

#2 There is a reason that 80% of SL users are on TPV(third Party Viewers). Pay attention to how they (TVP's) support, update, fix and LISTEN to their users.

#3. Bring back the many many Lindens that whats-his-face fired in his reign of incompetency and foolishness, and get some things fixed.

#4. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. Spend time in world. Talk to the residents. Many many have great things, brilliant ideas, and would work tirelessly to make SL great if only the ones in charge would PAY ATTENTION.

Just saying. IM me in world if you ever want an old sl users point of view.

Welcome Rod and Happy Holidays :-)

People are creatures of habit. Sometimes it's hard to differenciate between the VW and RW and it becomes more of an HR chore than a bottom line scenario. When that line starts to blur, its good to have a different perspective.. It's good to have fresh blood in the mix. IM if you need an ear.

oh cool, "The Sims" are taking over SecondLife soon

Really hope not! I hope that the new CEO know, that SL is not just a game, and that we don't need another facebook covered by a virtual world. SL need visions again like Philip Rosedale had once upon a time for SL and with him many Ex-Users.

WELCOME Rod

I wrote a thought out post ... to have it eaten by a website error message ... grrrs

This happens too often !!

Yet something else that needs serious fixing

(Am trying to train myself to copy & paste everything I write on SL website ... as a back up)

Hopefully I will find the time to rethink & re-write

& the finishing WELCOME to OUR world

Welcome to our slowly dying virtual world. Although I wish you the best, SL has had it best times. SL is beyond saving at this point.

However for LL there are plenty of oppurtunities. Think mobile devices, think augmented reality. Dont think 2011, think 2016. Dont pay dividend to share holders or invest in SL projects, instead invest it all in R&D for new cutting edge ideas and technology like SL once used to be, or that thing LL was working on back in the days that looks a lot like Kinect from Microsoft now. LL can still be a pioneer, however I dont see a role for SL.

SL had a nice run while it lasted. We're just here to pay it its last respect. Thanks for joining.

speak for yourself i enjoy sl every day as much as i did when i started back in 06. i'm definitely not paying my last respects, and if you are, perhaps its time for you to find a change of scene.

Holo, I agree. For some, it's valid as a game (tho I'd like to know what those who think it a game consider as the goal).

For a great many of us, SL is the wave of the future --  those of us who have the "view of Second Life as a cybercultural environment and microcosm of civilized society"

To have any less vision than that is to shortchange not only the residents and Linden Labs, but the loss of SL being an ongoing part of the future, relegating SL to a footnote in Cyber-societal history.

It doesn't show signs of stopping,
And I've bought some corn for popping,
The lights are turned way down low,
Let It Grow! Let It Grow! Let It Grow!

Merry christmas, Rod!

Welcome, Rod!

Please immerse yourself in SL and try to understand it...it means different things to different people.   It has the power to change lives, is unique, and very much loved by many.  However, realize that as loved as SL is, LL has NOT been so loved of late.  Residents feel abused, over-charged, unsupported, unappreciated, and trampled on.  My wish is that this is a new start for the company behind SL.   LL gave us a beautiful world...but its continued success is dependant on how it treats and values its residents .   Will you treat us as the partners we are? Will you recognize that we are just as invested in the success of SL as you are?

Did LL get taken over by EA?

Good luck Rod! I can't wait to see your avatar. Funny, I remember playing with a feature in Sims that put a real face on your sims avatar. That was kinda neat for it's time.

I certainly hope the new CEO will take notice of and give attention to the use of Second Life as a very "real" means of socializing and assisting others in skill development, especially 501c3 Non Profit Organizations who are doing good work for others.
