Today, mesh technology is available gridwide in Second Life. All SL users can now benefit from mesh technology, no matter what you do or where you are inworld.

If you shop, be sure to check out items built using mesh — they can sit alongside everything else you own and love in SL, but often look superslick, and may have greater detailing or design than a similar item built without mesh.

If you build, mesh is another option to help you access unlimited creativity. All the other traditional SL building options are still intact, we’ve just added to your toolkit.

If you sell things, selling objects created using mesh is one way to diversify your offering.

If you own land, well-made mesh objects can be used to increase efficiency and maintain optimum performance on your parcel.

Make sure you use the new Viewer to view and upload mesh objects correctly; older viewers will not render objects created with mesh correctly. Please check with third-party viewers; mesh support may vary.

A More Technical Look at Mesh

You’ve probably already seen mesh technology at work in modern video games, special effects and 3D animation. The term “mesh” refers to an object that consists of polygonal geometry data. That means it is extremely flexible — and it certain situations, it can be way more efficient than the existing prims and sculpties you’ll find inworld currently. Although existing building tools and techniques may still be the best choice in certain settings. You can talk with other designers about mes here.

Mesh objects are first created in external programs, such as Blender or Maya, (check here for more information) and then imported onto the Second Life grid. Once there, mesh objects can be manipulated in pretty much the same ways you would manipulate a regular old prim. Learn more about uploading your own mesh items here.

I just found out that some furry avatar makers are not going to be using mesh now or later.. some of them still want to use sculpty's which is fine i guess since i dont make furry avatars.. but with mesh being somewhat popular  they all should atleast make one avatar out of mesh one did already tokushi and it looks kinda cool. if it diesnt look at as good as Sculpty than just cancell the avatar but they all should atleast give it a shot

Plain prims/textures and old school sculpties/textures sometimes never rez.  Now a new item to look like a blob for hours.  All I want is the skin and shape I paid $999L for on 9/13.  Deliver that and I might download a Mesh viewer.  Let me ride my motorcycle across sim lines without a roller coaster ride and I might download a Mesh viewer.

Mesh is nice.  In Utherverse/RLC where I am also present, we use it almost exclusively for clothing.  And to the extent it allows clothing that conforms to a given avatar's contours (something I see deficiencies with in less-expensive clothing textures here in SL), it''ll be a great addition.

I'll be happier when arguably the best viewer for SL, Firestorm, has a stable, pretty much de-bugged release which handles mesh objects.  I've tried the Firestorm Mesh Beta and found some oddities like not being able to manually reposition the camera controls on the HUD.  But we all know what early beta releases are like.

Hopefully in a few months the bugs will be worked out.   As an old VRML builder, I am really looking forward to working with mesh objects again. :)

I'm so happy LL has been able to bring mesh to SL!

for many years I've been modeling in Maya and I joined SL 5 years ago hoping to be creative but found it hard and frustrating with the tools and using prims or Sculpts.  Now mesh is here I can create and import to my hearts content lol
I love the way mesh works in SL and the fact that you can UV map makes it very powerful for texturing.

I have started a small marketplace store and am creating homes and furniture with the lighting information baked into the textures for a more photo real look.

If anyone is interested in seeing what can be done with mesh please take a look at my Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/55236137@N03/

I also have some things inworld, here is a mesh factory I built:

There are still things LL needs to work out and fix with mesh but for now it's a great start!  We all need to spread to word of mesh and get SL users to move over to the new mesh viewers and enjoy the advantages of mash...
