“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead

From dressing up our avatars to taking photographs to blogging, modeling, socializing and checking each other out, fashion is a cornerstone of fun in SL.

But fashion can be more fun — it can benefit fellow residents. Since SL was born, people realized that the sale of content could not only go to people’s income but could also be used to raise funds and awareness for charities and worthy causes.

This month — March 10 to 20 — Fashion for Life will make giving the most fashionable thing you can do. Across 10 sims with over 200 designers participating, it’s the opening event for the Relay for Life SL in SL. Over 300 residents will be participating to make this the charity event of fashion in SL.

One-hundred percent of proceeds gathered from sales of specially-made and donated content, raffles, and gachas will go to the Relay for Life SL general fund, with everything going to the American Cancer Society. Last year Fashion for Life contributed over 5 million Lindens to the Relay for Life general fund. This was just a fraction of the $375,000 USD Relay for Life SL was able to send to the American Cancer Society, who supports cancer research, prevention, and patient advocacy around the world.

Even more important, however, is that this very public effort is a reminder to our friends in SL who are touched by cancer that our support is behind them, whether they are a survivor, a caretaker, or a loved one. Just seeing us rally together gives them a lot of hope.

Check out some of the beautiful pieces exclusive to Fashion for Life. Kimmera Madison made this beautiful dress and intricate jewelry exclusively for Fashion for Life. Based on our theme, “It’s Time,” the dress features an intricate laced-up corset bodice and flowing skirts in our signature colors of fuchsia and purple. The jewelry is made of clocks and watches. The saturated colors fit in on the 70s-themed Mondrian-styled sim, DreamSeeker Tijd, built by Nigel Riel.

A bit of romance can be found on the Rathmeous Dagger-built DreamSeeker Epoque sim when you wear this gorgeous dress created especially for Fashion for Life by Mirja Mills.

Many contemporary pieces will be sold as well. Take, for instance, this outfit from LeeZu Baxter, which includes a mesh skirt that will be sold exclusively at Fashion for Life. Shown at the DreamSeeker Volta sim, built by Troy Vogel and based on an Art Deco futureview, this chic ensemble is perfect for spring weather.

Giving money to a charity and receiving the bonus of getting beautiful avatar fashion is a great benefit in SL. You have the fun of shopping while giving money, and that's the best fashion for the season!

Spring 2012 will be all about embracing the innovative world of MESH in Second Life®. Mesh really is going to drive our community forward and offer our creators a platform to share things there were difficult or impossible through prims or sculpties. If you haven't really given mesh a chance, now is a wonderful time to explore this brave new world.

Right now the MIX + MESH Fair is in full swing. From Feb. 25 through March 11, it's a fashion-centered event highlighting some amazing designers who are using mesh. AVENUE produced the event, which hosts numerous fashion shows, shopping and contests, showcased around a full mesh build. Nardya Rousselot is the mastermind of the stunning build, which you can visit today. Check out the wonderful possibilities mesh has, as a tool not only for fashion designers, but for all content creators in SL.

TAXI to MIX + MESH Fair

Mesh is really easy to incorporate into your wardrobe, and most designers supply several standard sizes to suit most avatars. The first outfit, a yellow jumpsuit by R.icielli, is a single mesh attachment worn with glitch alpha layer.

A Mesh Affair by Vixie Rayna Yellow Jumpsuit.jpg

The small size fit my avatar nicely. It moves and bends with your avatar in ways that were difficult with prims. I adore the color, and it's a great classic piece for any wardrobe. Add a few vibrant accessories and you can really make this look your own.

Another great feature of mesh is the extremely detailed textures designers are able to create. Faint Paulse, of Ladies Who Lunch, has made great use of this with her new collection. It offers a seamless level of detail that previous system clothing made very difficult.

This mix-and-match outfit includes a prim feather top paired with a patterned mesh skirt. Details like layered feathers add a whimsical and unique touch the outfit.

You too can find the fun of mesh by exploring new builds, transporting yourself in the latest mesh automobile or discovering your own personal style using mesh fashions!

Spring: A time to wash away the monochrome hues of winter in a refreshing rain of color. We see the tapestry around us turn from gloomy grays, and spark alive with vibrant pastels, reds, blues, and greens. Flowers bursts forth from the land and paints the rolling hills with their blooming palette of color.

As the world washes away winter's grays, so should we do the same to our wardrobes. Don't let the layers bog you down — peel them away and let the colors cover you like they are covering the springtime season!

Spring is a time for activities — baby showers, weddings, holidays, barbecues, parties and vacations. You need to gear up for such occasions, which is a perfect opportunity to make a few "go-to" outfits so you are prepared for all of the springtime activities.

Here are a few looks that I put together for this spring. I normally wear a great deal of red, as it is my favorite color. This spring I wanted to embrace more colors into my wardrobe.

My first outfit is one I put together to wear for the following:

  1. A date at the docks
  2. The carnival
  3. A barbecue
  4. Sailing
  5. Any outdoor gathering

fresh-fashion-2012-a.png

Outfit 1

The second outfit is more fitting for the evening or nighttime. Whether you are going out with friends or on a date with that special someone, a little bit of layering can dress up a casual outfit like this. Spring nights can be chilly, and a jacket helps, as it is not only for warmth but turns a very casual outfit into casual-dressy. I love to wear bowties, and this gingham print reminds me of spring no matter the color, which made it perfect for this outfit.

fresh-fashion-2012-b.png

Spring Outfit 2

My final outfit is more formal. This would not be appropriate to wear to a spring wedding, however, so please keep that in mind. Unless the wedding party requests you wear white, you should never do so. White is clean and classy, and you can put any color with it — from a shirt to the accessories. Do not be afraid to mix up your color palette. Spring is vibrant and lively, and your wardrobe should be, too! Most importantly, have fun with your clothing. It is an extension of you, your personality and quirks, and the image you project is the one that comes to life when you embrace what you enjoy wearing. Enjoy your spring!

Fashion has a huge market in Second Life. There was a time when Second Life fashion was all about blingy shoes and prom dresses – seasons, or shall I say decades – behind the real-life fashion trends. But this has changed over the last few years. With the advancement of technology, people enjoying fashion blogging, and the increase in the number of content creators, there is this sudden burst of fashion exposure.

Second Life is a diverse environment with residents from all around the globe; fashion in SL today has its own unique identity of fusion – a beautiful blend and combination of various styles from different countries. And we all know that fashion is all about being inspired by what we see around us – knowingly or unknowingly. If what we happen to see is a model walking down the runway, then so be it!  Recently, while browsing through Vogue magazine’s Spring 2012 Fashion Guide, I picked up some spring 2012 looks and trends and got to thinking how to create these in SL. I was surprised to see that most of the predicted real life fashion trends were already in SL as part of many designers’ 2012 spring collection.  So, without having to spend a lot of real-life money, you can get the looks with minimal effort. I’ve got some looks right here for you. I hope you like the looks!

Androgyny has become an interesting twist to fashion styles and for the reason that all men and women possess both male and female qualities, AVENUE stylist Cade Nansen and I, have decided to pay homage to one of the less conventional ways of dressing up and showing how men and women can look equally striking in androgynous styles.

Our first stride into Spring involves reworking the military look by injecting a vibrant color palette that will keep you looking cool and confident whilst taking charge of any given situation that demands for smart casual chic.

Mesh went grid-wide on Aug. 23, 2011, and I have been slowly and steadily falling in love with it. With just a handful of designers introducing mesh items in the beginning, I am happy to see more and more creators joining the mesh madness.

Around that time I did a post on my own blog: Much Ado About Mesh, which gave a bit of an introduction to mesh: which viewers worked best for me at that time, what other bloggers were saying about mesh and which stores were currently offering it. Now, of course, a lot more people have joined the mesh revolution — so check out the Mesh Showcase in the Destination Guide for an updated list of designers offering mesh items.

StrawberrySingh-FreshFashion-1.jpg

For my first outfit today, I definitely wanted to include something from coldLogic. Coldlogic is a collaboration among Damien Fate, Janie Marlowe and Zyrra Falcone. Damien Fate has always been one step ahead when it came to mesh, being one of the first designers to get in on the action. His full-perm mesh templates were extraordinary — and are still available on the marketplace. I found ColdLogic full of stylish and versatile designs. I settled on the pretty yellow reed dress because it really called out “spring” to me. Check out the coldLogic site for a look at more designs.

StrawberrySingh-FreshFashion-2.jpg

Chain and Vine is another store that has been slowly pumping out some fantastic mesh styles at some of the best prices I've seen. You will find a growing collection of mesh items here at shockingly low prices. I picked up this light spring dress in green, but you can also find long skirts, dresses, minis, tanks and more. Check out the Chain and Vine site for a closer look.

StrawberrySingh-FreshFashion-3.jpg

Ladies Who Lunch carries mostly high couture designs that are full of so much life and color. I am constantly amazed at the creations being pumped out of this stylish boutique. Almost all of the newest releases from LWL have been mesh, or have pieces of mesh incorporated into the design. The lower half of the skirt I am wearing is mesh, as are the shoes (which are not visible in the picture). Check out the Ladies Who Lunch site for more mesh.

It's great to see more and more mesh designers picking up and using the Standard Sizing Package. It makes life easier, and I've discovered the small size fits me well for most of the items.

Here are a few more stores whose mesh items I adore: Maitreya, SLink, Rebel Hope and LeeZu. I am also loving that my favorite hair stores are starting to incorporate mesh hair and hair pieces into their styles. Check out Truth, Exile, Elikatira and Wasabi Pills.

Finally, don't forget to check out the adorable mesh avatar Flufee, created by Loki Dancer and available on the marketplace. Flufee is also somewhat of a celebrity and has his own YouTube channel where you can watch his mesh adventures. Check out the "Flufee on a Meshion" videos by Draxtor Depres for some hilarious meshy fun! I made a guest appearance in Episode 11!

The following article is from our "Capture Love" image contest winner, Spike Clémenceau-Silent!

Dawn.png

My original idea when joining the "capture love" contest was to show that there are many types of love in Second Life, which bring people happiness - not only the romantic kind. My current family Genesis Order Horde, is basically a close group of friends and family members who love and respect each other, while living in harmony and peace and welcoming anyone who wishes to live such a lifestyle while having fun - we are a clear example of it.

Parenting has truly made me a better man. I have learned, as is reflected in the picture, to slow down and just look at the simple things in life, like a good comforting dawn or sunset with my son while having coffee and catching up about our things - something we try to do every morning - and has helped me to put things in perspective. I am a happy parent of two boys - my partner, Onyx, always corrects me and calls them men, but to me they'll always be my boys. Skylar, the eldest, is the one in the picture and my youngest is Seymour.

Spike Sey & Sky.png

Valentine’s Day is initially thought out to be for couples, but of all the love I experience day after day in Second Life, the one I feel truly blessed and privileged to experience is the one I feel for my son, he has truly changed my life and how I interact with Second Life. Backatcha Sky!

Spike Clémenceau-Silent, Appointed Eldest of the Genesis Order Horde, a popular Second Life destination, DJ and co-owner of Club Se>en and columnist for Gayworldsnews & Sex and Second life, currently parent of two, Seymour Greymoon and Skylar Silent, founder and owner of SCS Designs. Rezzed in Second life on March 14 2010.

The Received Items Beta launches on Aditi today. Received Items is a new subsection of Inventory where all incoming items, including purchases, gifts, shared, and returned items, will be placed. Received Items is displayed in a separate section of your inventory panel in the Second Life Viewer, making it easier for Residents to see and manage incoming objects.

This Beta is a chance for Residents to try out these new capabilities. It also provides Second Life business owners with advance notice so they can plan for any additional communication or customer support around this upcoming change.  The production deploy is currently planned for mid to late March, so please help to spread the word!

Because Received Items and Direct Delivery will use the new Received Items folder, both systems will launch together.

If you would like to try out Received Items, please see the Received Items Beta instructions on the wiki. These instructions include pointers to Knowledge Base articles and ways to provide feedback.

Received_items_(Beta_feature).png
UPDATE: Feb 29, 2012
We’d like to thank everyone who has provided feedback on the Received Items Beta. We will be launching Direct Delivery without redirecting any other objects to the Received Items folder. (Direct Delivery purchases will still be sent to the Received Items folder). We will be soliciting additional feedback on Received Items by contacting Residents who respond to this survey by 5pm PT March 1, 2012. We will do our best to speak to as many of those who participate as possible as we move forward with work on this feature.
