Are you an educator seeing positive results from using Second Life? We’d love to hear from you! Please join us in this Education Forum thread to share your answers to the following questions:

  1. What educational organization do you represent?
  2. How do you use SL in your educational endeavors?
  3. Most importantly, what positive results have you seen from using SL?

From direct conversations, press coverage, and the like, we’ve heard of a number of organizations seeing positive results using Second Life for education, but we’re always eager to hear more and we hope you’ll add your voice to the thread.

Thanks!

Linden Lab

Valentine’s Day is just on the horizon and will be here before you can get through a handful of heart candies! We’re looking for some great Second Life pictures from the community to feature in upcoming email and banner campaigns - with credit to the photographer - of course!

In a snapshot, let us know what Valentine’s Day means to you in Second Life.

Share your story in a picture and on our Official Flickr Page with the tag “SLVday2016” so that we can see all of your amazing works. You may submit as many as you like between now and January 29, 2016.

We’ll showcase the chosen image(s) in an email to Residents, as well as in some banner campaigns. We’ll let the chosen image creators know via Flickr and ask for an avatar name for the credits.

Submission Requirements:

  • Images must be at least 2048x1207
  • Make sure that your submissions are appropriate for all audiences.
  • Show your avatar or avatars in a scene inworld - an image that tells a story is going to make an impression.
  • Keep your image free of additional text/logos
  • Make sure your lighting is not too dark and that avatars can be seen well

As an example, here are last years selections:

Good luck and have fun!

September Update

September brings new developments to Second Life for Premium Memberships, improvements to Profiles and an update on mesh. These are all part of Linden Lab’s ongoing focus in 2011 on improving service, performance and usability.

New Premium Membership Benefits

At the beginning of September, we introduced some new benefits for Second Life Premium members. The first improvements? Exclusive gifts and Premium-only sandboxes.

oQFjsbJmM93gQID4x1hudMOXEiAfPgjwXoAGvRHduEAtEl-M1KnERnG6Pk-98AdnXwfzJdlEZBcrS6rDj92Lxqz5t-qKs7xF83EtNKdR8w43g3w3hG4

Getting access to your new Premium rewards is easy. Premium Gifts can be claimed now by members via one of the many inworld Premium kiosks, and the Premium-only Sandboxes are already open.

Even more benefits are on the way, so this is just the beginning. Read the original blog post for more details about Premium Sandboxes and Premium Gifts.

Not a Premium Member? There couldn’t be a better time to sign up. We’re running a special limited-time promotion for new quarterly Premium memberships from now through Monday, Sept. 12 at 50 percent off the regular price.

Get Even More Out Of Social Profiles with Location Posting

September also brings a new social sharing feature to the Second Life Viewer. Residents now have the option to conveniently share where they are inworld by adding a location to their Profile posts as a tag:

y_YRmH9mUb45dJ4Y2MR1y5OS7bMlMZG0JVyy7a7nyTWjfhEhHZpRRBlyqnpik_Ubca6aAOaIyfavmEUyMeLQ-gZrBw7z_Cc8iwMK35n7sf36Y41TGDg

This means that people reading your posts live can teleport directly to your location and join you. Those who see your post later can also check out the location to see exactly what you were talking about even if you’re no longer there.

Of course, you can always choose not to use this feature it’s just there when you want it.

These “Locations” tags get really fun when combined with your Profile's “Nearby” feature. To check it out while you’re inworld, follow the menu Me → My Profile. Then, click on the first icon:
7ouTmZQnD-dJO_Z3WxbHn3b5rh7FxHgysOrpU3kcjxGeTUIbW5yaQKlgt4QaGfRrsMf5zfzVvBvJqmlZajBmGoL3Oen9_bCu3eIAxt-qAaJzv8ls-34

Then click the second tab, “Nearby”:
uCiVsimAT2yN-8zskm4ergFGn3wFC9qtPYmePYF-_K6j5RvKT8yRj11K8ZXGXXoC0RwwrC_T32X77Kz0NJbJz_xVkSWaEDQXJqpvBYyPU8lGmLMOrdI

Now you’ll see posts from people nearby wherever you are inworld. Some of these posts might even be made by people in the same location at the same time you are there. It’s a great way to connect with others to start a conversation.

TcyBN4kFoHurEwazByxeWzSi3eXUjUA4LsjYjUEcevP9OTbwoParwlZwTOmzflrhOZ-UZCd0Vp2wu2p9eXiltdzM_b81wkSOM7kyKqiQmkY4I9i1vaA

You can also use this feature to browse through older posts, which can give you insights as to what kind of activities and conversations typically happen in that region. For example, you might uncover posts about recent or upcoming live music shows, hot new stores or the insider scoop on the hottest local dance clubs.

So... let people know where you hang out and why — or keep quiet, and just see what others are doing and saying.

If you haven’t heard the full story of Social Profiles, check out our post from last month for more details and the big picture.

Mesh Update

With the arrival of mesh, a number of Residents have already started to create some impressive mesh items inworld. Since its inception, we’ve seen more than 9,000 content creators enable mesh, and more than 20,000 items have already been uploaded to the grid. And we’re looking forward to seeing what creations you make next.

There’s a lot of excitement around what mesh models can offer — for more information or to try it yourself, check out this page. You can also browse through some of the first mesh creations in our Mesh Showcase. The Lab is working on continued improvements and the next mesh release will include upgrades to how we show resource weight and land impact of objects.

Mesh rolled out in August as an added option to all inworld building tools to help Residents craft even more creations inworld. For the best mesh experience, you’ll need the current version of the Second Life Viewer (Version 3.0) or a comparable viewer.

Go create something great,

Linden Lab

This year, once again we’re hoping to draw out all you music makers to come audition for the festival. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, electronic to acoustic - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!

This panel will select acts to be invited to perform at the Second Life Music Fest. Upon completion of a half hour slot at the festival, the designated contact for each act will be eligible for payment (subject to Linden’s terms and conditions).

All Second Life Residents are welcome to participate in the auditions as audience members. It’s an opportunity to see a variety of acts showcase the best they have to offer. This June, Second Life turns 15 and we’re planning some fun ways to honor this long-standing community and invite some of the rest of the world to come check out what makes us so special! Stay tuned to this blog for more details about events to come and read on to find out about the first of many - our annual Music Fest - sponsored by Linden Lab.

In recent years we’ve taken the popular idea of music festivals and brought them into the virtual world - all the music, merriment, and good times without the sunburn. This year will mark the 4th annual Music Fest in celebration of Second Life - and we can’t wait to get grooving.

Since we started Music Fest in Second Life, we’ve held an audition showcase to highlight some of the musical talent in the Second Life community. Many of you have been performing for years in virtual venues all over the grid, and we’d love to have you come showcase your talent at the tryouts for this summer Music Fest. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, rock and roll to electronica - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!

To sign up for an audition, please complete and submit the submission form no later than May 18, 2018. Upon completion of a half hour slot at the festival, the designated contact for each act will be eligible for payment (subject to Linden’s terms and conditions).

All Residents are welcome to participate in the auditions as audience members. Again, I can’t stress enough what a great time it is to see so many musicians perform and support one another! As we recently mentioned, this month marks the 11th anniversary of Second Life first opening its virtual doors, and in honor of this occasion, there are some fun things lined up to help us all celebrate Second Life’s 11th Birthday (SL11B).

First off, we’ve created a brand new limited-edition SL11B avatar that everyone can now get for free!

robot.png

This robot is sleek and ready to explore the landscapes of Second Life. Made with Fitted Mesh, you can put your own stamp on this android by playing with some of the shape sliders. Just make sure you’re upgraded to a Viewer with Fitted Mesh enabled. There are two ways to get your robot - pick it up inworld at Hairy Hippo Fun Land in Bay City or just visit the Marketplace.

Year after year, our community has shown off the very best of what Second Life can do and mean, and that tradition continues with the Second Life 11th Birthday Community Celebration (or SL11BCC) which kicks off on Sunday June 22nd. This community-driven celebration will host exhibits, music, and much more. Find out more about what’s planned and how you can get involved on their website.

If you’re looking for more ways to celebrate or planning events of your own, the new Second Life 11th Birthday Category in the Destination Guide has got you covered. Check there often to find SL11B parties to join all over Second Life, and if you’re planning an event for the occasion, be sure to submit it using the form (use the ‘Misc’ category) or via editor@lindenlab.com. Use “SL11B” in the subject line on the form or email.

We hope you enjoy your new SL11B avatar and we look forward to seeing you at the inworld celebrations. Be sure to  show off your SL11B adventures by sharing snapshots to the Second Life Official Flickr Group Page.

It has been just a little over a week since we launched the inworld shopping event to commemorate SL14B. We’ve gathered 60 Merchants, each providing a free gift as well as discounts on many of their top items. Be sure to take some time to drop in and take advantage of the incredible deals at hand. The shopping event spans three contiguous Regions, making it easy to cam shop or easily walk through. A little retail therapy may be just the thing you  need.

We have plenty more in store for celebrating our 14th anniversary - and will share more details on that below, but first - if you are planning an event in celebration of SL14B, be sure to send the deets to our editors over at the Destination Guide. We’ve got a category set up just for the occasion, and would love to get your event listed as soon as possible!

Now, on With the Show!
We are going to rock the Grid with three days of music - from Italian Opera to full on Psychedelic Rock - and you won’t want to miss out on that. Our 3rd Annual Music Fest is coming, and so much cooler than Coachella - literally, you can blast the air conditioning or fans from the comfort of your computer! Details about lineup and location to come - but be sure to save the dates, get your tail feathers ready to shake, and find those ‘rock on’ bento gestures for the show!

Ain’t No Party Like a Second Life Party

We will be hosting two costume parties inworld - Come as You Were, and a Masquerade Ball. We all come into this (virtual) world as total n00bs, and the Come as You Were party is a nod to those days of yore - whether it was yesterday or over a decade ago. Put your best Ruth forward, as there’s a costume contest and a L$5000 prize on the line! We’re also hosting a Masquerade/Masked Ball - where mystique and intrigue are sure to reign supreme! There is also a L$5000 prize for the best at the ball! Both parties will take place at the Cake Stage in the SL14B Community Celebration Regions - stay tuned for details once those locations go live! Those Regions will also be home to where you can pick up a special commemorative avatar and bonus gift from the Lab.

  • Masquerade: June 19, 2017  from 11am - 1pm SLT

  • Come as You Were: June 21, from 6 - 8 pm SLT

Second Life Community Celebrations

I have worked with many communities in my time, and I can tell you that none are quite as creative and unique as the Second Life community. This community never disappoints when it comes to putting together a bevy of good times inworld during the anniversary week. Watch their site for updates on what is happening this year for the SL14B Community Celebrations!

As part of those events, they will be interviewing some Lindens at the Meet the Lindens series. Those talks will take place on June 19 - 22nd at 2 PM. More details to come!

Ebbe Altberg

Join us tomorrow at 9:30 am (SLT) for an Inworld Town Hall meeting with Linden Lab CEO, Ebbe Altberg.

We blogged at the end of August, taking questions in this forum thread ( now locked ) and the time has finally come for the Town Hall event to take place. Questions have been selected from those submitted, and time permitting, there will be some time for open questions as well. Additionally, many of the questions we do not get to in the Town Hall meeting, will be addressed by additional Linden staff in the forum thread, after the Town Hall wraps.

You can join is live at any of these Town Hall locations.

See you inworld!

Mark your calendars and set your DVRs: an upcoming episode of the popular daytime talk show, Dr. Phil will feature Second Life and some comments from Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg (Ebbe Linden in SL). The episode is slated to air on Tuesday, July 14, and you can find your local listings through the Dr. Phil website.

Be sure to catch the very beginning of the show - you won’t want to miss Dr. Phil controlling his avatar live on what’s very likely the largest monitor Second Life has ever run on (40 feet wide!).

Dr.Phil_BlogPost.jpg

The episode is focused on helping a young man who is sadly struggling with a number of problems, including an addiction to playing an online game. He’s not a Second Life user, nor is Second Life presented on the show as a negative experience. Instead, it’s shown as an example of how far digital experiences have come from the days of Pac-Man and Pong, and Ebbe briefly speaks with Dr. Phil about some of the incredibly positive ways Second Life is being used by people around the world - from education to entrepreneurship, creative self-expression, and more.

In addition to a number of Lindens who helped make it possible for Second Life to be included in the program, we’d like to give special thanks to Naughty Mole, Abnor Mole, Ancient Mole, Bat Mole, and Draxtor Despres for their help in creating Dr. Phil’s avatar and filming some inworld footage showing his explorations of Second Life.

Linden Lab

We at Linden Lab believe that net neutrality is extremely important. Lifting the FCC’s Open Internet Rules would not only jeopardize the experience of Residents using Second Life, but can also negatively impact all aspects of our online lives.

Later this week, Congress will vote on this issue, and we encourage Second Life residents to join us in calling on our representatives to preserve net neutrality.

To that end, we have joined the “Break the Internet” initiative, and if you visit SecondLife.com or login to Second Life today, you’ll notice a pop-up tool (snapshot below) that makes it easy to send a message in support of net neutrality. Of course, if you’d prefer not to use this, you can simply close the pop-up and login as usual, but we hope you’ll consider adding your voice to this important issue.

Linden Lab, the maker of Second Life, is one of the hundreds of organizations collaborating today to generate awareness about the importance of protecting user privacy. We know that our community cares about its privacy...and that’s why we’re happy to support Data Privacy Day -- an international effort to empower individuals and business to respect privacy, safeguard data and enable trust.

To learn more about our commitment to protecting your privacy, check out this Q&A with our Information Security Director Kavya Pearlman (a.k.a. Maya Linden).

“I believe strongly that privacy isn’t just one team’s job - it’s a collaborative, communal effort,” says Pearlman. “Many large organizations have had dedicated privacy teams, yet have ultimately failed in safeguarding consumer data and protecting user privacy, which is why it’s so important to us here at the Lab that privacy comes first at every turn - that it be woven directly into the fabric of our products, from the engineering level to the product level to the marketing level.”

As you may have already heard, HBO will be showing a documentary called, When Strangers Click: Five Stories from the Internet on February 14 (Valentine’s Day). The film is the work of Robert Kenner (the Oscar®-nominated director of the documentary Food, Inc.), and it presents several stories of people finding love online. One of the segments of the film is a great Second Life love story: a talented musician happened to meet a woman at an inworld performance, and as a result, both of their lives have changed significantly.

Watching the film, it’s clear Robert Kenner ‘gets’ Second Life, and in addition to telling his subjects’ stories with compassion, he realistically presents the virtual world and its possibilities. If you’re an HBO subscriber, I highly recommend checking this one out. For details and the trailer, see this page on the HBO Documentary Films website. If you’re not a subscriber, keep an eye on the film’s Facebook page for the DVD release date.

Watch Paisley Beebe Interview the Director

On February 6, Tonight Live with Paisley Beebe will have both Robert Kenner and Bara Jonson, the musician featured in the film, on the program. Paisley will interview Robert, and Bara will perform live. For details, check out Paisley’s announcement here.

Share Your Own Story and Support the Film

Over the years, many of you have shared your own stories about making meaningful connections with others in Second Life – and now, the filmmakers would love to hear them as well.  If you have a story about meeting someone in Second Life that deeply affected you (it doesn’t need to be a romantic connection), add it to the film’s Facebook page – and while you’re there, click ‘Like’ to show your support!

Linden Lab

As we blogged back in the Summer of 2014, gambling is strictly prohibited in Second Life and operating or participating in a game of chance that provides a Linden Dollar payout is a violation of our Terms of Service.

However, games of skill are legally permitted in many jurisdictions, and we’ve seen that many Second Life users are interested in playing such games for Linden Dollars. We updated our gaming policy in Second Life at that time and opened applications for Skill Gaming. Skill Gaming applications will reopen on January 3, 2017, for those who wish to become authorized creators and/or operators of Skill Games in Second Life.

The details of the Skill Gaming policy can be found here, and the Skill Gaming FAQ is available on our wiki.

In summary, skill games that offer Linden Dollar payouts are allowed in Second Life, but each game, its creator, its operator, and the region on which it is operated must be approved by Linden Lab.

Applications for creators and operators will be available on the FAQ page beginning January 3, 2017.

To celebrate, we put together a special (and somewhat mysterious) gift set.

SL14Blog.png

We’re not entirely sure what a Sananok is, but the Moles assure us they are friendly creatures that tend to keep to themselves and need a good home. Each Sananok avatar comes with a mysterious egg, which is  in fact so mysterious, not even the Moles know what it will hatch into.

Sananok Avatar

Sananok.png

A wearable avatar that includes a shape and an alpha layer.

Mysterious Egg  (Rezzable or wearable)

Egg.png

Things you can do with the egg:

  • Rez it out your parcel, make it feel at home.
  • Add it to your avatar to carry it around with you (perhaps for a night on the town?).
  • Have a tea party with it, it’s all good.

Linden Lab

It’s a new year, and we have news: Second Life is now available on Amazon!

In addition to the standard Mac and PC versions, we’re offering several bundled packages for sale, which include vehicles to enjoy and L$ to spend inworld or on the Marketplace.

As a special promotion, this weekend only the Starter Vehicle Pack (usually $9.95), which includes a hoverboard and L$1000 will be available for FREE [limit one per customer].

If a friend of yours has been waiting to join Second Life, now is a great chance for them to head over to Amazon and get started with the free Starter Vehicle Pack. Spread the word!

Linden Lab

If you keep an eye on Linden Lab announcements, you might have seen that we recently acquired Desura, the community-driven digital distribution service that puts the best games, mods and downloadable content from developers at gamers’ fingertips, ready to buy and play.

Now, Second Life is available on Desura (oh, and Patterns is too)! You can still access Second Life as always, but this now makes it easier for anyone with a Desura account to get into Second Life as well. If you have friends who are Desura players, help spread the word! And, if you’d like to check it out yourself, it’s free and easy to create a Desura account.

Linden Lab

As some sharp-eyed developers have speculated, we’re going to make Second Life available on Steam in the next month or so.

Many of us have friends who are avid Steam gamers, but if you’re not familiar, Steam is a very popular online game platform that offers a wide range of titles (and will soon also offer other software as well).

What does this news mean for Second Life? You’ll still be able to access Second Life just as you can today; there won’t be any change to that. But, the more than 40 million people who use Steam will also be able to get Second Life as easily as they can get games like Portal.

We’ll make an announcement on the blog when Second Life is actually available on Steam, but in the meantime, if you have friends who are Steam gamers, let ‘em know it’s coming!

Linden Lab

There’s a lot going on with Second Life these days, and we wanted to talk about a few of the projects that are either out or in the works!

Project Valhalla: CEF - Media on a Prim and in-Viewer Browser Overhaul
A new age of modern HTML5 content is upon us, and we're overhauling the way shared media (aka "media on a prim") works so that you can enjoy all kinds of modern web content within Second Life. Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) is coming to replace the aging QTWebkit framework. What you can now see in a Project Viewer is the latest released version of Chrome - so it will render all modern web technologies - like HTML5, CSS3, WebGL; has the latest security patches; and will be easy to keep updated to a recent version. What does this mean for your Flash content? What about Quicktime? They may still work, but because both can only be viewed if the user has correctly installed a 3rd party plugin, we can't  promise support and you shouldn’t expect that it will work for everyone. Standard HTML5 is the way of the future and this Viewer will enable it for anyone. There are still bugs to squash, and we’re iterating quickly to bring you a smooth inworld media and browsing experience. If you have comments about this feature - please post to the forum thread about this topic - located here.

Rendering Complexity / Quick Graphics
Often the most resource-intensive part of rendering a scene in Second Life is the avatars around you. The Viewer has a measurement of how avatars are affecting your performance, and now we are putting the control over whether to render them in your hands!

A new *Avatar Maximum Complexity* control lets you prevent expensive-to-render avatars from lagging you; any avatar over the limit is displayed as a solid color rather than rendering in full detail. A default limit is set based on the rendering performance of your system. You'll also get a notice when your own rendering complexity changes, and an indication when you're over the limit of too many of the avatars around you.

Bundled together in this Viewer is a change that allows you to create and quickly change presets of your graphics settings, so as you go from a club to an art gallery, to the beach, or to your home, you can quickly adjust your settings to fit the scene. Learn more about these changes: avatar rendering complexity: graphics presets: and try the Release Candidate ViewerIf you have comments about this feature - please post to the forum thread about this topic - located here.

Notifications

notifications_screen.png

A neat quality-of-life improvement for busy Residents, incoming notifications are sorted into categories where you can view, interact with each or many at a time, and use them to manage the numerous important notices that arrive throughout the day. Try out this feature in this RC Viewer. A special thank-you to Resident Aki Shichiroji for the initial feature design!

SecondLife.com
Due to the numerous recent security problems affecting Flash, it has been completely removed from our website. A modern way to animate starter avatars in the join carousel and some other exciting news for registration is coming out really soon. Keep an eye out!

Mesh Importer
Recently we shipped the Mesh Importer Viewer, which now performs name-based LOD association and handles models with many materials - no post-import assembly required. You can visit the Knowledge Base article for more details.

Inventory Robustness
Inventory loss is a dogged and complicated problem that we are constantly pursuing. A recent simulator change now prevents loss of no-copy items due to a failed rez. A number of other improvements to inventory robustness are in the pipeline and will be rolling out soon.

HTTP Project
Last year we created a better implementation of the HTTP layer in the Viewer and used it to substantially improve texture loading. In this new RC Viewer, we've upgraded all the rest of the HTTP uses in the Viewer. This will make many other features perform better and more reliably, and is establishing the foundation for future improvements.
