Second Life creators are taking elements of role play, re-enactment, and re-creation to allow Residents to experience different places - even in different points of time throughout history. That’s what Cyperpiper Roelefs and his team have set out to do with Luxembourg City and 1867 The Virtual Pfaffenthal.

The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg hosts an exhibit in the physical world  that enables visitors to experience Cyberpiper’s virtual Luxembourg City and 1867 The Virtual Pfaffenthal in Second Life. The exhibit also includes Oculus Rift stations for more immersive exploration.

In addition to the exhibit at The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, Cyberpiper has created a virtual representation of Fort Thungen in Second Life which visitors to the Musée Dräi Eechelen can access with the use of computers setup inside one of the forts rebuilt towers. These stations allow patrons to travel back and time and experience the Fort as it was years ago.

Cyberpiper has also re-created Fort Thungen for an immersive experience inside the Musée Dräi Eechelen - which is housed in the fully restored Fort. Inside one of the fort’s towers, patrons can travel back in time to explore the Fort’s history from inside Second Life.

In this episode of The Drax Files: World Makers, Cyberpiper discusses how walking and living - virtually - in historic regions enhances traditional understanding of history. Watch the video

and visit these locations in world for yourself.

There’s a lot going on with Second Life these days, and we wanted to talk about a few of the projects that are either out or in the works!

Project Valhalla: CEF - Media on a Prim and in-Viewer Browser Overhaul
A new age of modern HTML5 content is upon us, and we're overhauling the way shared media (aka "media on a prim") works so that you can enjoy all kinds of modern web content within Second Life. Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) is coming to replace the aging QTWebkit framework. What you can now see in a Project Viewer is the latest released version of Chrome - so it will render all modern web technologies - like HTML5, CSS3, WebGL; has the latest security patches; and will be easy to keep updated to a recent version. What does this mean for your Flash content? What about Quicktime? They may still work, but because both can only be viewed if the user has correctly installed a 3rd party plugin, we can't  promise support and you shouldn’t expect that it will work for everyone. Standard HTML5 is the way of the future and this Viewer will enable it for anyone. There are still bugs to squash, and we’re iterating quickly to bring you a smooth inworld media and browsing experience. If you have comments about this feature - please post to the forum thread about this topic - located here.

Rendering Complexity / Quick Graphics
Often the most resource-intensive part of rendering a scene in Second Life is the avatars around you. The Viewer has a measurement of how avatars are affecting your performance, and now we are putting the control over whether to render them in your hands!

Snapshot_002.jpg

Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 4.48.24 PM.png

A new *Avatar Maximum Complexity* control lets you prevent expensive-to-render avatars from lagging you; any avatar over the limit is displayed as a solid color rather than rendering in full detail. A default limit is set based on the rendering performance of your system. You'll also get a notice when your own rendering complexity changes, and an indication when you're over the limit of too many of the avatars around you.

Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 4.44.00 PM.png

Bundled together in this Viewer is a change that allows you to create and quickly change presets of your graphics settings, so as you go from a club to an art gallery, to the beach, or to your home, you can quickly adjust your settings to fit the scene. Learn more about these changes: avatar rendering complexity: graphics presets: and try the Release Candidate ViewerIf you have comments about this feature - please post to the forum thread about this topic - located here.

Notifications

notifications_screen.png

A neat quality-of-life improvement for busy Residents, incoming notifications are sorted into categories where you can view, interact with each or many at a time, and use them to manage the numerous important notices that arrive throughout the day. Try out this feature in this RC Viewer. A special thank-you to Resident Aki Shichiroji for the initial feature design!

SecondLife.com
Due to the numerous recent security problems affecting Flash, it has been completely removed from our website. A modern way to animate starter avatars in the join carousel and some other exciting news for registration is coming out really soon. Keep an eye out!

Mesh Importer
Recently we shipped the Mesh Importer Viewer, which now performs name-based LOD association and handles models with many materials - no post-import assembly required. You can visit the Knowledge Base article for more details.

Inventory Robustness
Inventory loss is a dogged and complicated problem that we are constantly pursuing. A recent simulator change now prevents loss of no-copy items due to a failed rez. A number of other improvements to inventory robustness are in the pipeline and will be rolling out soon.

HTTP Project
Last year we created a better implementation of the HTTP layer in the Viewer and used it to substantially improve texture loading. In this new RC Viewer, we've upgraded all the rest of the HTTP uses in the Viewer. This will make many other features perform better and more reliably, and is establishing the foundation for future improvements.

A-haunting we will go! This year we’re going to take inworld meetups and Halloween shenanigans and mix them together for a frightful mashup of mind-blowingly fun times. But - we need your help to make it happen.

Are you interested in hosting a stop along our Second Life Creepy Crawl? We’re looking for spots that will have music, are appropriate for general and moderate audiences, and don’t mind having a few Lindens and Residents dropping in all at once to dance and hang out for a bit.

The Creepy Crawl will be taking place on October 30th - more details to follow for those who just want to come along for the fun! But for those interested is potentially being a stop along the crawl - here’s what you should do.

  1. Make sure your place is listed in the Destination Guide - here’s how to submit.
  2. Hop over to this form and fill it out before October 20th - we’ll start selecting the venues after that!
  3. Keep an eye out for an email and/or notecard after the 20th to let you know if your venue was selected.

We’re excited to visit as many Halloween spots a possible - and can’t wait to have some spook-tacular fun!

With the Freedom Project and his Global 3D Art & Machinima competition, JayJay Zifanwe and the University of Western Australia in Second Life encourage people to express themselves through their stories via art and machinima created in Second Life. Recently, WAtoday wrote an article about JayJay’s incredible Second Life re-creation of the UWA’s Crawley physical campus  - showing how this virtual space created a ripple effect - impacting the lives of people who could otherwise only dream of visiting such a place. The UWA in SL serves as the home base for artists and others to come together and participate in many projects.

In this episode of the Drax Files, artists discuss the process of self-expression through artistic creativity in Second Life, and JayJay shares insights on some of the ways this medium has empowered people in unexpected ways. Watch the video

Second Life is transitioning to a new payments processor for credit cards. If you use a credit card for Second Life payments and have not added or updated your billing information since July 7, 2015, we strongly encourage you to re-enter your information to avoid any potential disruption of services. If you use PayPal or Skrill for Second Life payments, no action is needed.

Adding billing information to your Second Life account is as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Login to your Second Life account at SecondLife.com
  2. Click “Account,” then “Billing Information”
  3. Under “How You’re Paying” just click to Add the payment method of your choice*

To learn more about the benefits of adding billing information on file, the many supported payment options, and how to add or update your billing information, please visit this page in the Second Life Knowledge Base.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your attention and help in spreading the word throughout the Second Life community.

*Note: You may notice small authorization charges made to the credit card associated with your account. As is common when new payment processors are initialized, these charges are made to confirm the validity of the billing information on file and will be automatically voided by your bank or credit card issuer.

One of Second Life Residents’ favorite holidays is coming up at the end of next month - but that doesn’t mean we can’t start celebrating Halloween now! We’re already seeing a ton of spectacular haunts being submitted to the Destination Guide, and now we’re looking for some of your great inworld images!.

Share your Halloween themed images, and your work could be featured in an upcoming email or banner campaign - with your avatar name credited of course! Do you like to dress your avatar up in costumes - travel the haunted spots all over Second Life, and generally run amok during this time of year? Why not show off your fun with images?

Share your pic on our Official Flickr Page with the tag “SLHalloween2015” so that we can see all of your amazing works. You may submit as many as you like between now and September 28th, 2015.

We’ll showcase the chosen image(s) in an email to Residents, as well as in some banner campaigns. We’ll let the chosen image creators know via Flickr and ask for an avatar name for the credits.

Tips for your submissions:

  • Make sure that your submissions are appropriate for all audiences.
  • Show your avatar or avatars in a scene inworld - an image that tells a story is going to make an impression.
  • Keep your image free of additional text/logos
  • Higher resolution images work best.

Good luck and get to haunting!

Linden Lab

Magellan Linden put the moles to work building a theme park on the latest hunk of land discovered in Second Life… but something’s gone horribly wrong!

Uncover the mystery of a menacing plan and explore six exciting regions teeming with dinosaurs and valuable collectibles in PaleoQuest. The evil Dr. Talpa has mangled space and time - colliding past, present, and future into a single point in time - which happens to be at the PaleoQuest Theme Park. Are you the dashing hero the world needs to stop Dr. Talpa from taking over? The rewards are great - but so is the risk! Dare the treacherous obstacles that lay in waiting,  and uncover a wealth of hidden tools and items that will aid you in your quest for fame and adventure. Fortune may await those with bravery and determination - you can redeem your findings for prizes and Linden Dollars!*

You’re Really Going to Dig This!

Each zone of the park contains its own challenges and collectibles. Finish one in order to unlock the next.Track your status on your HUD as you complete main quests. It won’t be easy! Each turn could hold unknown threats like quicksand, falling rocks, flesh-eating plants, or dangerous dinosaurs. Oh, did we forget to mention those? Try to avoid any and all of these risks - as an encounter could mean losing your collectibles.

One of the greatest things about Second Life is its community! From banding together to help a fellow Resident in need, to building incredible experiences, events, and more — this community is an incredible reminder about how amazing each of us has the potential to be. That is just one of the reasons we love presenting the Second Life Destination Guide Highlights each week. Stay tuned to our social media channels for more Residents-helping-Residents events opening this weekend.

Show your support and log inworld to see all the wonderful things happening, but take some extra time to stop by a few of these high points going on right now in Second Life!
