The Drax Files: World Makers is back with another great human interest story from a Second Life user. This episode is all about the well-known virtual model Absinthe and the thriving fashion community inworld.  Absinthe opens the episode with a statement that many Second Life Residents can relate to:

“You’ll know what your avatar looks like when you find your soul avatar,” she says, “You’re like - that’s it. That’s me. That’s who I am.”

This episode looks into the way in which Absinthe and others identify with their avatars. Like many of us, Absinthe’s avatar represents a facet of her personality, but doesn’t necessarily bear a complete physical resemblance.

Offline, Absinthe works with patients who have HIV/AIDS and volunteers at Camp Hope as a clinical pharmacist; inworld she indulges her love for fashion through her modeling work and her FEROSH project. FEROSH is a visual arts digital publication that interprets current fashion trends in the context of Second Life.

To hear more of Absinthe’s story and find out more about her FEROSH project, watch the video embedded below or follow this

The subject of the latest episode of the Drax Files: World Makers is the man behind the avatar known as “Oblee” and how he utilizes Second Life to express himself via live musical performances.

Despite residing in a remote space in Durango, Colorado, Oblee is able to perform in Second Life 2-3 times a week; reaching a global audience and often collaborating with other musicians from all over the world.

Oblee was able to take his virtual earnings from playing venues in Second Life to finance his debut album Wow Bob Wow. His fans and audience from Second Life were some of the first to run out and purchase his music once it was available.

Oblee finds new audiences by exploring regions where the residents may reside in other countries like Japan, and though they may not speak English they understand the universal language of music. “It’s not an alternative to life - it’s adding to the substance of your existence.” he says in the

 below.

 GLyer5_IyEM

Oblee also states that “If you have an idea in virtual reality, what’s to stop you from taking it to real reality?”, and he’s successfully used Second Life as a platform for his musical expression and to explore new things with his own music - creatively pushing him to try new things and compose a variety of original music.

You can follow Oblee on Twitter to stay in the know on his performances inworld.

Linden Lab

The latest episode of the Drax Files: World Makers focuses on actress MadameThespain Underhill, who directs the virtual reality theater troupe - Avatar Repertory Theater in Second Life.

A.R.T has been performing live theatre in Second Life since 2008,  with a cast of actors from multiple generations that span several locations all over the world.

MadameThespian - a seasoned Chicago-based actor who also performs and directs for her local Shakespeare company - feels that the virtual theater affords opportunities to those who could otherwise “age out” of many roles in live theater.  "Second Life levels the playing field when we interact with each other," she says.

This leads to the unique combination of professional TV and stage actors working  with dedicated hobbyists and community theater buffs to perform drama, comedy, musical and improvisational theatre to the global audience of Second Life.

jkm9mQlejCw

In addition to the creative possibilities that a digital universe such as Second Life holds, MadameThespian is enthusiastic about its social aspects as well.

"The value for older people is wonderful because of the ability to interact with other people from all over the world of other ages,” she says. “You are being judged by what you say - the pure essence of who you are!"

Be sure to watch for the latest shows and performances from the Avatar Repertory Theater who are performing scenes from some of Shakespeare’s plays tonight at 5 PM SLT/PT  - details are available on their Facebook page.

For more than thirteen years, Loz Hyde has been professionally building 3D models for commercials and movies such as Terminator: Salvation, 2012, and Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s also translated this experience into a successful brand in Second Life - Meshworx.

He states that “Creating a mood is really important” and part of his approach and philosophy to his work.

Among his many contributions is the now iconic "Arcade" building, which is inspired by the Brighton Pier in Loz's native England. The Arcade Gacha in Second Life serves as a beloved destination for many Residents during the regular Gacha events hosted there, as well as a place to become immersed in a turn-of-the-century pier experience.

While it takes some time and dedication to build the highly detailed pieces sold in his store, Loz has discovered a way to take his offline creative skills and make them both profitable and fulfilling in Second Life.

Loz says, “You can do pretty much anything you want to do, and that’s what is so empowering about it.”

Founded by Second Life resident Kiana Writer, MadPea brings together a collective of talented designers, storytellers, and game creators from around the world to create some of the best immersive storytelling experiences on the grid. Scripters from Holland manipulate the game mechanics with 3D modelers from the United States in real-time, while designers from Germany, France, and the U.K. help test gameplay. It is truly a global collaboration!

MadPea has built a strong reputation in the community for intellectually stimulating games that combine clever puzzles, cool graphics, and unexpected surprises.

“Second Life is the perfect place for amputees to overcome emotional trauma by sharing stories and realizing they are not alone!” says Sandra L. Winkler, assistant professor at NOVA University in Florida, teaching occupational therapy.

Sandra and her Virtual Health Adventures project are the subject of the latest episode of

. She’s studying the use of Second Life both as a tool to help amputees and as a way for occupational therapy students (and anyone, really) to experience a body image with a prosthetic and empathize more closely with amputees.

While the study is still in an early state, Sandra believes results show that virtual worlds offer a valuable platform to help facilitate a peer-network and offer emotional support to friends and families who are dealing with physical and emotional transitions.

This study is just one example of how Second Life and virtual worlds can create a mutually positive exchange between people who may otherwise be unable to meet.

Explore where art imitates Second Life in the latest episode of the Drax Files: World Makers.

This episode features the works of an Italian illustrator - Flokers - who has synesthesia and whose Second Life avatar art has turned her passion into a full-time job. Her viewpoint is that an avatar represents a person’s inner persona, and her paintings reflect that. “It doesn’t matter to know who they are in real life,” she says, “ because I know them in Second Life … and that’s what they are to me in that moment.”

Watch this

With so many ways for users to communicate with one another in Second Life, there are quite a few communications tools in the Viewer. To make it easier to find, learn and use these tools, today we released a project Viewer that introduces CHUI (Communications Hub User Interface). In addition to bringing most of these communications tools “under one roof,” CHUI also introduces some new and improved features.

One new feature is the Conversation Log, which provides a list of all the conversations you’ve had in the last 30 days. This includes IMs received from both friends and non-friends while you were offline. From the Conversation Log you can open the entire history of your communication with another person, so you no longer need to search for it on your computer’s hard drive. (You just need to choose the option of saving chat logs on your computer for this feature to work.)

A feature already in SL is the ability to open a conference chat by selecting multiple people from your friends list, and with a right-click, create a private IM session with all of them. In CHUI, you can now add people to a conference chat after it’s started, or add someone to an existing one-on-one IM session.

CHUI also makes it easier to move your voice connection among your open conversations, including nearby chat, private IM, conference chat or group chat. Click the “add voice” button on any conversation to move your voice connection to that conversation. Click the “hang up” button and your voice connection is returned to nearby chat.

In addition, you are now able to access your chat preferences in a single click from the Conversation window.  You can change the volume of a single person’s voice by simply clicking on that person’s speaking icon in the Conversations window.  In CHUI, the chat entry box expands to multiple lines as you type.

On the People window, we added a tab for blocked people and objects, so you no longer need to open a menu to see this list. It is also easier to unblock someone if you change your mind.

We are still working on making notifications more consistent and user-controllable. Depending on the type of incoming communication, you will be able to choose a notification style, such as a flashing button, a sound, or no notification at all. You’ll also be able to choose distinct notification types for friends and non-friends, as well as for those times when you’re busy and you’d prefer to be interrupted only by friends. We’re also in the process of moving the voice morphing capability so it will be easier to find and use.

On the People window, Conversations window, and Conversation Log window, we have moved the buttons to the top, where they are easier to see. In addition, we are leaving space for more buttons because there’s always room for improvement -- and because we expect you will have great ideas for more new features.

We’ve been testing CHUI inside Linden Lab for some time, but any major redesign requires a lot of people using it to make it as smooth and useful as it can be. This is where you come in.

Please think about these questions as you use the CHUI project viewer:

  • Are the new features useful?
  • Do the functions you commonly use seem more streamlined, or do they require more clicks than before?
  • Are all of the functions, both old and new, easy to find?

We’ll ask you to complete a survey in approximately one week to gather your thoughts on these questions.

If you find a bug, there’s a good chance we’re aware of it.  Please check the list of open issues and report yours at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/chuibug

We look forward to hearing what you think and hope that you find CHUI to be as much of an improvement as we do.

Happy Monday, Everyone!  Today we are happy to announce the release of a brand new feature for our viewer which has been in production for a very long time. We’re quite excited by the possibilities offered by the new Bakes On Mesh feature for our content creators, and judging by their engagement thus far, they are too!

What is Bakes On Mesh?

In short, Bakes On Mesh is a feature that allows you to apply a server baked texture to a mesh attachment, similar to the way that standard system avatars currently work. Using this feature, you’ll be able to apply several texture layers to customize skin, tattoos, clothing, etc on your mesh object as a single server baked texture without the need for multiple transparent layers.

Major Features

  • Any face of a mesh object can be textured using any of the server baked textures.

  • The corresponding region of the system avatar is hidden if any attached mesh is using a baked texture.

  • New texture bake channels have been introduced to give more control over how meshes get textured.

  • A new “universal wearable” is now provided with support for the new texture channels.

Benefits

  • Avoid the need for appliers, leading to an easier customization workflow.

  • Avoid the need for “onion” avatars, leading to fewer meshes and fewer textures at display time.

  • Allow for customization of any mesh that’s set to use Bakes on Mesh by simply equipping the appropriate wearables, without needing to modify the mesh itself.

You can read more about how Bakes On Mesh works, and the wide variety of possible uses, in our Knowledge Base article on the topic, or watch an early demo created after our original post! We are excited to put this new tool into your hands and see what you all come up with!

You can download the Bakes on Mesh enabled viewer release and start checking out Bakes on Mesh now.
