Our Destination Guide is filled to the basket brim with a bunch of spring and Easter-themed goodies and treats. Traditional Easter fairs and egg hunts are rampant across the grid each a colorful celebration of the season. If you’re not big on Easter, there’s still a treasure trove of art, activities, and events in Second Life for you to explore. Our community is as lively and diverse as hand-painted eggs!

Make sure your spot is on the list and drop us a note at editor@lindenlab.com or submit your spot via form.

Colorful pics can make excellent pics, so be sure to take plenty and share them on our official Second Life Flickr. We select “Pic of the Day” from that group as well as other materials like our Facebook cover and landing page images.

Hop on inworld we will see you there!

Linden Lab

Currently, when a region is full, access to the region is simply on a first come first served basis. This leads to a sort of distributed race to enter the full region; users repeatedly try to teleport or cross into the region and fail until someone leaves.  The next attempt made by anyone  succeeds, which makes the region full again. Even the region owner and estate managers must compete with other Residents to get into their own region if they find themselves outside of the region when it is full.

We are introducing some improvements to how region limits and region entry work:

  • The Region Owner or an Estate Manager can always enter, even when the region is full

In effect, the region occupancy limit does not apply to the Region Owner or an Estate Manager for the purposes of entry. Having entered the region, the owner or manager does still increase the count in the region. For example, if there is a region that already has the maximum number of avatars in it, the Region Owner or an Estate Manager would be able to enter, but that would bring the number in the region to 1 over the limit, so 2 would need to leave before the next non owner/manager could enter.

  • The default limit on the number of avatars in each region type is increased

    • Full Regions by 10% (100 to 110)
    • Homesteads by 25% (20 to 25)
    • Open Spaces by 20% (10 to 12)

This new bonus capacity is, however, available for entry purposes only to Premium users - for Basic users the occupancy limits remain the same. For example, when a Full Region with a limit of 110 users has 105 users in it, Basic members will be unable to enter - they will see the region as full - but 5 more Premium users will still be able to enter.

  • The current (owner controlled) limit on each region will automatically be reserved for Premium entry by the same bonus %:
    • If the owner of a Full Region had reduced the default 100 avatar limit to 50, the same bonus percentage (+10%) is reserved for Premium entries, so 45 entries will be usable by Basic members, and 5 additional spaces will only be available to Premium members.

Once an avatar is in a region, whether they are Premium or not will not matter; they count the same as anyone else. It doesn't matter what the mix of Premium, Basic, or owner/managers in the region is: they all just each count as one occupant.

We will be rolling these features out slowly to regions in and around you.

We’re excited to offer this new functionality, improving the experience of Land Owners and Premium Members in Second Life.  Login and keep your eyes open for another announcement once the rollout is complete!

For a limited time, the Second Life community can explore a new experimental version of Social Island, which is a revised welcome area that we hope both new and returning Residents will enjoy.

Based on your feedback, we’ve been harvesting a new crop of ideas to grow a new-and-improved experience. The Second Life development team has planted the seeds for several new experimental features that you’ll only find in this new Social Island preview. This area will continue to grow in the future, but you can get a "sneak peek" now! Highlights include a challenging maize, and a revised region design that we think will yield more organic and natural social interactions.

We do want to emphasize that this is just a kernel of what’s to come, and that some features are still under construction, but we hope that you’ll check it out!

Some say March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb. As we head into April, there’s no denying the peaceful and tranquil sites across so many Second Life regions. While we kissed winter goodbye with our last official snowball fight a few weeks ago there is still plenty of fun to be had as spring rolls in all across the grid.

Our Destination Guide does a great job of rounding up the latest in activities, shopping, and good times to be had. Make sure your spot is on the list and drop us a note at editor@lindenlab.com  or submit your spot via form.

Don’t forget to take loads of pics and share them on our official Second Life Flickr. We select “Pic of the Day” from that group as well as other materials like our Facebook cover and landing page images.

The VWBPE Conference is a community-driven event that focuses on education in immersive virtual worlds like Second Life. It’s organized by educators, for educators as an opportunity to showcase and share research and best practices in virtual learning environments.

The conference runs through April 1st, and a full schedule of events in available on the website.

Ebbe Altberg, CEO of Linden Lab, has participated in the VWBPE Conference since 2014, when he spoke at the Featured Keynote just a few weeks after joining Linden Lab. This year, Ebbe will be part of Above the Book: a Conversation about Education in Second Life with Kevin Feenan, founder of the Rockcliffe University Consortium. The discussion will take place on Wednesday the 29th of March, at 1 PM SLT. You can view a live stream during the talk via YouTube. Many of the discussions throughout the event will be recorded and made available on the VWBPE YouTube channel after April 5th, 2017.

Place Pages are Linden-hosted web pages  for every Second Life location listed in Search, which landowners can customize and make their own. These pages make it easier to discover great places in SL and give Residents another way to promote their destinations.

We started a limited Beta program for this feature back in January 2017. This allowed us to respond with tweaks and polish to help get it to where it is today. This current offering is our “Unrestricted Access” release, which now allows all landowners to access their Place Pages and personalize them. Many of these pages will also soon be discoverable via popular search engines, such as Google. This means that more people than ever have the potential to learn about your Second Life place!

Moving forward, we’ll be continuing to improve Place Pages with more user-facing features, so stay tuned! For more information, visit the Place Pages Knowledge Base. A forum thread was also started for those wish to get even more history or would just like to leave us feedback.

Check out these example Place Pages:

We hope you enjoy this new feature and look forward to see even more places to discover and explore!

Back in December, we blogged about some adjustments to billing and trading limits on the LindeX® exchange. These adjustments put a cap on the trading volume for each Resident’s account at certain tiers, in an effort to prevent fraud and comply with applicable regulations.

As part of Linden Lab's continued risk management process, we are now introducing monthly Process Credit limits. We anticipate that few, if any, Residents will be negatively affected by these adjustments, and will persist in monitoring any impact these changes may cause.

You can review your existing limits on this page; your Process Credit limit will be listed there, as well as your Buy and Sell limits.

You can request a tier limit review through our support system. Simply submit a ticket --> Billing --> LindeX Billing and Trading Limits Review Request (for basic accounts) or  Billing and L$ -> LindeX Tier Review ticket options (for premium accounts).

It is clearly Spring outside the office windows here at Linden Lab. Blue skies, crisp air and sunny sidewalks, and everyone seems to have a bounce in their step that indicates the shedding of winter memories and the excitement of a new season upon us.

While it can be Spring eternal  in virtual life — there’s no doubt that Residents love to do it up in full festive glory. Egg hunts and pretty pastels are around every corner, and the sweaters and coats of last week are replaced with tank tops and cardigans.

Our Destination Guide knows just where the latest adventures await in Second Life. So swap out those boots for an open-toe shoe and hit the grid with a bounce like you mean it!

If your Second Life creation is missing from the Destination Guide, drop us a note at editor@lindenlab.com  or submit your spot via form.

Don’t forget to take loads of pics and share them on our official Second Life Flickr. We select “Pic of the Day” from that group.

Hello Residents!

The new Community Platform is finally here! It has taken a bit longer than we anticipated, because we encountered some challenges during this transition that are unique for this community, which unfortunately required more time than we’d initially planned.

We want to thank the community for your patience while we ironed out some of the larger issues to get the new platform ready for prime time. We also want to thank you in advance for your continued patience as we continue with some of the polishing work that will come over the next few weeks.

Now, about that new platform …

We have a new Community Home Page. From here you can see the latest things happening across the community platform, and click through to your favorite areas. This brings more visibility to areas like the Knowledge Base and Blogs, instead of dropping you directly into the forums.

Speaking of the forums - one of the things that we were unfortunately unable to transfer to the new platform was background images on profile pics. If you were using a background image for your profile, you will need to upload a new profile pic. The good news is that uploading a profile image on the new platform is much simpler and more intuitive than before. Just select your profile from under your name, and you can upload an image from there.

We will continue to make improvements, but wanted to get the community platform out as soon as possible, so that the Knowledge Base was back online.

Here is a list of known issues, most of which we expect to fix in the coming days/weeks:

  • Some posts may have missing images. Where possible, we will be fixing and/or updating these.

  • Some posts may have been slightly reformatted or have a slightly different layout.

  • Previously used emotes may no longer work.

  • Some old Community URL redirects may be broken.

  • Some users have lost their account profile images and will need to reset them.

  • Second Life headers and footers are currently missing from community pages, and we are working to restore those.

  • The window title needs to be updated.

  • Clicking on a Help link from the viewer will load the page in mobile layout; this is not optimal, and we are working to correct that.

If you come across any bugs that are not listed above, we encourage you to let us know about them through our Jira system here. (NOTE: Please be sure to file with the System type “Website” and related Community sub-category.)

While there is still work to be done, we are very excited to unveil the new Community Platform to you.

Linden Lab

There are some exciting changes coming to the Second Life community platform! A fresh look and feel are just around the corner. In order to make this happen, and to ensure that everything remains intact when we make the changes live, we need to export existing community platform content, which - you can imagine - is a lot of data!

Exports require that the forums be put into “read-only” mode during the export process.  What that means for you is that during that time you’ll be able to read the forums, but not publish new posts until the export job is complete. Our hope is that by doing this we will avoid any gaps in the content as we import it into its new home.

The current timeline is as follows:

February 21st through February 27th -  The forums will go into read-only mode. Our hope is to have the new site live sooner than the 27th, but we want to be sure things go smoothly.

February 27th - The new platform goes live and the forums are taken out of read-only and full posting functionality is brought back online.

We will keep everyone up to date via the Blogs during this process - so please stay tuned.

We can’t wait to show you the new community platform and look forward to opening the doors very soon!

Here’s a sneak peek of the new layout. Please keep in mind that this is just a mockup with content and image placeholders - not the final look. You'll have to wait until we launch the new community platform to see that!

As we blogged back in the Summer of 2014, gambling is strictly prohibited in Second Life and operating or participating in a game of chance that provides a Linden Dollar payout is a violation of our Terms of Service. However, games of skill are legally permitted in many jurisdictions, and since then we’ve seen that many Second Life users are interested in playing such games for Linden Dollars. We updated our gaming policy in Second Life at that time and opened applications for Skill Gaming.

Skill games that offer Linden Dollar payouts are allowed in Second Life, but each game, its creator, its operator, and the region on which it is operated must be approved by Linden Lab.

As of today, Skill Gaming Operator applications are being closed. Any pending applications submitted prior to the date of this blog post will be reviewed and processed normally.

Though applications for Operators are now closed, you can still apply as a Skill Gaming Creator with the application process available on the FAQ page.

The details of the Skill Gaming policy can be found here, and the Skill Gaming FAQ - including approved Operators and Creators - is available on our wiki.

When it’s cold and raining outside, it’s nice to curl up with a cup of hot tea and relax, but sometimes you can get a little case of cabin fever and long for a nice stroll through sun-dappled meadows or a crisp glide across an ice-skating rink to stretch those virtual muscles! Place Pages are a new feature aimed at making the huge variety of awesome places in Second Life easier to find by creating web pages for each inworld location that opts to show in search.

Today, we’re starting a beta for this feature. All regions and parcels that have elected to Show In Search now have an automatically generated Place Page that’s visible on the web, you can check them out and share them today! Places rated General will be visible to anyone, and those rated Mature or Adult will be subject to the usual Maturity controls.

We’re beta testing additional capabilities that will make Place Pages even better. Invited testers will have access to an admin panel that allows them to add a custom welcome message, place description, tag line, image, and video support to their place pages. That’s not all -  we’re working on other features like an events calendar, advertising parcels that are for sale/for rent, and more. Of course, all of the region/parcel stats like size, maturity rating, etc. will be available front and center too. After the testing period, we plan to roll these features out to everyone - so stay tuned!

For now, our beta is focused around customizing these pages, and planned future improvements include making sure these pages are optimized for search engines to be sure your inworld places can be easily found by people searching for relevant terms. Keep up with the most recent developments by checking out our public forum post on it. Thanks and enjoy!

The Second Life Team has been busy shipping lots of updates ( big, small, and medium) to the Residents of Second Life. These last few months alone, we’ve burned the midnight oil to get a ton of things showtime ready - and we thought the end of the year was a good time to recap just some of the highlights from Q4.

Raising the “Prim” Limits for Mainland and Private Regions

Raising the Land Impact allowance for Mainland and Private Regions allows you to do more with your virtual space! If you’re creating, building, or re-decorating, more Land Impact means more fun! We are excited to see the ways these new Land Impact increases are sparking creativity and ingenuity with Residents all over the Grid. The new option to upgrade to 30,000  Land Impact Limit has been extremely popular as well. We're happy to see so much interest - just in time for some seasonal decorating!

Maintenance Maintenance Maintenance

The SL team has been, as always, plugging away on keeping the plates spinning.  Each Maintenance Viewer, Web, and Server release contains multiple fixes that include performance improvements, bugfixes, crash fixes, and tons of small feature work. Unglamorous on its own, this work is what  keeps Second Life humming along and this work is our most responsive branch - we often take small feature requests and get them out to Residents in a matter of weeks.

Horizons

Horizons - Residents are having a great time playing through the Horizons experience and carving out their own piece of the Horizons community as well! It’s sci-fi retro fun, and something we were delighted to launch publicly. If you want to scan current listings you can do so by visiting the auctions page. More parcels will be auctioned out soon!Horizons_Billboard_final2.png

360 Snapshots

360 snapshots is in Project Viewer stage. Dramatic new fully panoramic views of Second Life for social media, blogging, and whatever you can imagine are now possible!  We are looking forward to getting that out in the main Viewer soon.

Bento - Extending the Avatar Skeleton

Well, by now you’ve heard the news.  It’s done!  By far the most significant change to the Second Life avatar in a long time, this is already empowering users to create fantastic new avatars, animations and accessories. Bento heads, hands, and much more to come from our super innovative creators. One of the most exciting parts is to see what the creator communities dream up for Bento! There’s a Knowledge Base article about the enhanced skeleton for those creators who want to find out more, and a quick search for “bento” on the Marketplace shows work is already being created that utilizes the new feature.

A number of new gateways are ready to open, with more joining soon. Keep an eye on this blog for more information about the application process and the program - coming soon!

Website Update

A major update of the infrastructure for secondlife.com brings improvements in security and maintainability. This was a long labour of love and all of the teams who worked on it performed miracles of concentration and cooperation to get it done. It may not be a very visible change, but it was a huge undertaking and we are happy to have it implemented site wide.

Before the aforementioned battle of snowballs, we all took a nice peaceful crawl across four beautifully decorated winter regions. Chatted, plotted our snowball strategies, and enjoyed one another's company while listening to holiday music. It’s always nice to gather with friends and have a good time.

Winter Wonderland

Your winter should include a trip to this amazingly whimsical and beautiful region put together especially for the holidays. True to its name, this is a spectacular spot to visit when you have some time to play in the snow, ride the Ferris Wheel, hit the hills on a sled, and get some snowball fighting in.Winter_Wonderland_002.png

We look forward to bringing you much more in the coming year - some of which is already well underway - and we’ll continue to share news with you on our blog as even more exciting things develop!
