The Second Life economy continues to be steady, with nearly all key measures staying within a narrow range of just a few percentage points up or down over the last year. The largest changes compared to last year's Q3 were an increase of 7.2% in World Size, a decline of 11% in User Hours, and a 115% increase in Web Merchandise Sales Volume.

Over the last year, the number of people participating in the economy has also been consistent, ranging from 480,000 to 496,000 (currently 486,000), as has L$ Supply, which has ranged from US$25.4 million to US$26.2 million, and was at a 12-month high in Q3.

For a definition of the metrics in this post, please see this wiki page. Click on each image below to see a larger version.

AVERAGE MONTHLY REPEAT LOGINS

Average Monthly Repeat Logins fell 2.1% from Q2 but still rose 5.3% year over year.

USER HOURS

User Hours fell 3.7% from Q2 and 11.0% year over year. The most significant quarter-to-quarter loss of user hours was from the heaviest usage segment (accounts logging over 300 hours per month).

AVERAGE MONTHLY ECONOMIC PARTICIPANTS

Active economic participants fell 1.0% from Q2 and year over year.

participants.png

AVERAGE EXCHANGE RATE

As expected from the fluctuations in June, the average exchange rate of L$ per US$ rose 1.7% from Q2, or 2.5% year over year. Note that a rise in the L$ exchange rate represents a drop in the value of the L$, as one US$ now buys more L$ than it did last quarter.

xchg.png

L$ SUPPLY

The equivalent US$ value of all Resident-held L$ grew 1.2% from Q2, or 6.1% year over year. Although there may have been fewer economically active accounts in Q3, this suggests the L$ in those accounts did not exit Second Life.

ldolsupply.png

LINDEX VOLUME

LindeX volume in Q3 fell 3.8% from Q2 and 2.8% from Q3 2009. With fewer economic participants, there was less need to replenish L$ balances from the LindeX.

lxvol.png

WEB MERCHANDISE SALES VOLUME

Total sales volume on both Xstreet SL and the new SL Marketplace rose 8.5% from Q2 and grew 115.2% year over year. Note that the SL Marketplace was only in beta during Q3 and makes up less than 10% of total Q3 Web volume.

WORLD SIZE

Total world size fell 1.4% from Q2 and grew 7.2% year over year.

Linden Lab

The Second Life economy remained consistent in Q2 2011. The highlights were strong growth in registrations, a steady Linden $ exchange rate with slight appreciation, and continued growth in Linden $’s held by customers –with most other key metrics within 1-2% of recent quarters.

For a definition of the metrics in this post, please see this wiki page. Click on each image below to see a larger version.

DAILY COMPLETED REGISTRATIONS

With the addition of Basic and Advanced viewer modes, plus an improved new user registration flow in early Q2, there was a sharp uptick in registrations that continued throughout the quarter. Q2 averaged 27.9% more completed registrations per day than Q1.

AVERAGE MONTHLY UNIQUE LOGGED-IN USERS

Average monthly logged-in users for Q2 increased 2.8% from Q1 2011. This chart is more comparable to industry standards for reporting size of customer base and will replace previous measures based on user repeat logins or time active.

AVERAGE EXCHANGE RATE

The exchange rate remains very consistent and strengthening slightly with a 0.4% appreciation in the L$ over Q1 and a 4.3% appreciation in the L$ over the same quarter last year.

*Note that the exchange rate is expressed in L$/USD, meaning larger numbers represent a lower L$ value and smaller numbers represent a higher L$ value. The average rate is calculated by dividing the total L$ exchanged through the LindeX by the total US$ exchanged through the LindeX in the quarter.

L$ SUPPLY

Money supply grew by 2.2% in Q2 from the prior quarter and 15.8% year over year, bringing the equivalent US$ value of all customer-held L$ to US$30 million.

*Note: From time to time we will change our reporting in order to provide the most relevant and accurate summary information for the use of merchants, landowners, content creators, and other participants in the Second Life economy.  Q2 2011 is an estimate calculated based on different methodology versus previous quarters.

LINDEX VOLUME

Q2 LindeX volume declined 2.7% to US$30.6 million in line with seasonality. This is a strong 4.4% increase over the same quarter last year.

Some may argue that the winter holidays are the most wonderful time of the year, but in Second Life, we know how to celebrate year-round. Halloween is easily among the most popular holidays amongst the SL community, and we are so ready to have some screaming good times as the Creepy Crawl is back in all its creepiest and crawliest glory. We are looking for venues to host us as we hop from spooky spot to spooky spot for some conversation, dancing, and fun.

What is the Creepy Crawl?

Like a bar or pub crawl, but instead of walking from one watering hole to the next. We will teleport en masse from spot to spot and monster mash to our little avatar hearts’ delight - on Halloween! This year’s Creepy Crawl will happen on Halloween (Thursday, October 31st) from 10 am - 2 pm (SLT/PT).

If you’d like to host a stop along the Creepy Crawl, own a spot that will be decked out for the holiday, and don’t mind if a parade of Residents and Lindens come through, then you might be just what the witch doctor ordered. We’re looking for spots that have entertainment (we like to dance around in our costumes!), are appropriate for general and moderate audiences, and can handle a crowd.

Here’s how to submit your venue for consideration:

  1. Make sure your place is listed in the Destination Guide - here’s how to submit.

  2. Hop over to this form and fill it out before October 25th - we’ll start selecting the venues after that!

  3. Keep an eye out for an email and/or notecard after the 25th to let you know if your venue was selected.

We’re excited to visit as many Halloween spots a possible - and can’t wait to have some thrillingly good times.

If you’ve been in Second Life for awhile, you are probably familiar with the MadPea Productions brand. In fact, back in 2013, the Drax Files covered and chronicled what they were up to and here - five years later - they are creating even bigger and more interactive games within Second Life!

In the latest episode of Drax Files: World Makers, Draxtor Despres revisits Madpea and Madpea Production’s Queen Pea - Kiana Writer.

TDF 47 everwinter.png

Just in time for Halloween - this episode dives into the dark themes of many of the MadPea products, including Mad World - an amusement park with interactive games, rides, an escape room, and plenty of photogenic spots to get your creep on.

Second Life creators are taking elements of role play, re-enactment, and re-creation to allow Residents to experience different places - even in different points of time throughout history. That’s what Cyperpiper Roelefs and his team have set out to do with Luxembourg City and 1867 The Virtual Pfaffenthal.

The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg hosts an exhibit in the physical world  that enables visitors to experience Cyberpiper’s virtual Luxembourg City and 1867 The Virtual Pfaffenthal in Second Life. The exhibit also includes Oculus Rift stations for more immersive exploration.

In addition to the exhibit at The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, Cyberpiper has created a virtual representation of Fort Thungen in Second Life which visitors to the Musée Dräi Eechelen can access with the use of computers setup inside one of the forts rebuilt towers. These stations allow patrons to travel back and time and experience the Fort as it was years ago.

Cyberpiper has also re-created Fort Thungen for an immersive experience inside the Musée Dräi Eechelen - which is housed in the fully restored Fort. Inside one of the fort’s towers, patrons can travel back in time to explore the Fort’s history from inside Second Life.

In this episode of The Drax Files: World Makers, Cyberpiper discusses how walking and living - virtually - in historic regions enhances traditional understanding of history. Watch the video

and visit these locations in world for yourself.

With the Freedom Project and his Global 3D Art & Machinima competition, JayJay Zifanwe and the University of Western Australia in Second Life encourage people to express themselves through their stories via art and machinima created in Second Life. Recently, WAtoday wrote an article about JayJay’s incredible Second Life re-creation of the UWA’s Crawley physical campus  - showing how this virtual space created a ripple effect - impacting the lives of people who could otherwise only dream of visiting such a place. The UWA in SL serves as the home base for artists and others to come together and participate in many projects.

In this episode of the Drax Files, artists discuss the process of self-expression through artistic creativity in Second Life, and JayJay shares insights on some of the ways this medium has empowered people in unexpected ways. Watch the video

How well do you get to know the people that you meet in Second Life? If you’re Tom Boellstorff - probably a great deal more than most! As a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California: Irvine and digital ethnographer inworld, Tom has spent much of his 12 years in Second Life getting to know the people he’s encountered.

In this episode of the Drax Files, Tom discusses avatar identity, the use of virtual worlds for gameplay and self exploration, and why referring to offline life as ‘real life’ poses a problem when studying technology like Second Life.

to hear more of his personal take on the future of virtual worlds and some of his observations on the communities he’s encountered inworld.

Exactly 10 years ago today, award-winning media maker Draxtor Despres (a.k.a. Draxtor™) uploaded to YouTube one of his most-acclaimed pieces of virtual journalism:  “Virtual Guantánamo [in Second Life].” The video, which received mainstream media coverage and won an “Every Human Has Rights” Media Award, was conceived at the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) with a MacArthur Foundation grant in 2006.

GG_titles2.png

This early machinima production documented the making of the Gone Gitmo project (“Virtual Guantánamo”), a 3D replica of the infamous Guantánamo Bay Detention Center in Second Life. Inworld visitors to this virtual prison experience were subjected to an “abduction” simulation that included a dark plane ride and being thrown in a cage. Until its closure in 2013, this inworld project was also used for multiple mixed reality panel discussions including events affiliated with Seaton Hall Law School and the ACLU.

Nonny and Peggy during interview.png

The project was a collaboration between VR pioneer Nonny de la Peña and former USC professor and artist Peggy Weil, both of whom created the project under the mentorship of former BAVC creative director Wendy Levy. Second Life was the ideal platform for the ambitious project, and it demonstrated how virtual worlds could be used as a storytelling medium for social justice issues.

This month, Draxtor revisits his original reporting and meets again with the people behind this pioneering piece in immersive journalism that served as the precursor to the popular ethnographic series on virtual lives “The Drax Files.”

Long-time Resident Arduenn Schwartzman has developed quite the reputation as a prominent inventor, scripter and builder in Second Life. With a career that includes stints as a both a molecular biologist and assistant professor outside Second Life, Arduenn is perhaps best known inworld as creator of the air combat game WarBug.

“Second Life rekindled the possibility to be creative,” says Schwarzman. “Over the years, I’ve always been fond of flight simulators. I thought it would be awesome just to have an air combat game. Second Life is perfect for that.”

Arduenn’s enterprises in Second Life extend well beyond aviation. Over the past 10 years, he has also created over 400 items that can be found for sale at OMGWTFL$10. In addition to his inworld store located near the WarBug Headquarters in Second Life, many of his items can also be found on the Second Life Marketplace. Among his crazier creations are a scripted and animated fly swatter, a gun that shoots nachos, a tin-foil hat, and nine pieces of sculpted bacon. Of course, there’s also the Fart HUD 2.0 that is advertised as the “perfect Valentine’s Day gift.”

To find out more about Arduenn and his many adventures in Second Life, watch the latest episode of “The Drax Files” below.

Educators and instructors have been utilizing Second Life for many years to teach subjects like Chemistry, and the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference - which just concluded its 10th annual conference inworld - brings educators together to discuss their research and findings in virtual learning. This episode of the Drax Files takes a closer look at the application of education in Second Life though some of the work being done by Istanbul University professors Tuncer Can and Irfan Simsek

From teaching English, to training future teachers how to evaluate digital tools for learning and education,  Can and Simsek use Second Life to teach hundreds of students every day.

With Second Life, “... you are creating some playful, engaging, and colourful environments” says Professor Can. Within these environments, students can safely and comfortably express themselves through their avatars. The comfort can help with openness and a focus on learning.  The virtual world also helps prepare onboarding students who plan to physically attend Istanbul University and acquaint them with campus life, other students, as well as Turkish culture.

To find out more about the unique learning opportunities provided in Second Life education courses - including the use of machinima to recreate history in relatable contexts -  watch the full episode here.

All the way from the far-reaching borders of Germany and the Netherlands, Draxtor Despres joins Death Row Design’s Jaimy Hancroft to chat about a little more than just the weather -- in this episode of the Drax Files.

Death Row Designs is a staple in Second Life  - providing a post-apocalyptic and dystopian spin on fashion, decor and architecture. Jaimy’s dark, grungy style has made her a favorite of many Residents over the 10 years that she’s been in Second Life, and now she is able to support herself with her brand.

With help from her sister Eowyn Swords - who does 3D modelling for Death Row Designs - Jaimy’s unique and creative work appears in a variety of events from the Arcade Gacha to many of the big shopping events inworld.

Another compelling aspect of Jaimy’s work in Second Life, is her commitment to Fantasy Faire to benefit Relay for Life of Second Life. To read more about her personal inspiration from her father, Mario, and how her culinary flare helped channel her creativity - watch the

For the last decade, Nonprofit Commons has used Second Life to foster a community of practice to help nonprofit organizations network, fund-raise, educate, and reach global audiences with their missions. With more than 60 international nonprofit organizations with missions ranging from LGBTQ activism to AIDS awareness and education, support groups around substance abuse, anger management, and domestic violence, Nonprofit Commons facilitates those groups by helping them explore and learn the unique ways in which Second Life can amplify their messages. Second Life provides ease of access to those seeking weekly meetings and a community of peers - regardless of their abilities - connecting Residents to groups and support they may not otherwise have access to.

"We have an ongoing community and that is key: technology in and of itself is not the answer and the reason why Second Life is so successful is because it brings people together," says Susan Tenby, founder of Nonprofit Commons in Second Life and Director of Social Community & Strategic Partnerships at Caravan Studios, a division of TechSoup - which sponsors Nonprofit Commons.

For the last thirteen years - long before the recent popularity of head-mounted displays -   Second Life Residents have constructed amazingly immersive experiences that impact people’s lives in ways they perhaps never would have imagined. Whether it’s visiting a national park or bygone era, or creating the perfect place to call home, it has been possible to virtually build and visit many locations - based on the physical world or completely imagined - in Second Life.

Thanks to the artistic eyes and talents of many creators, you don’t have to be a creator or builder to put together your own incredible spaces. Residents like Sominel Edelman support themselves by providing readymade landscapes for role-playing regions, privates spaces, land rentals, and more - making it possible for anyone to customize a beautiful space without having to understand terraforming.

While it may sound cliche that a fashion designer would hail from one of the world's most known fashion hubs, Maylee Oh isn’t influenced so much by Fashion Week as she is by her own day to day experiences and the personal expressions of the people and the city around her. “It’s all about creativity, no matter where we are!” she states. Linden Lab

This episode of the Drax Files almost didn’t happen. When initially asked to participate, Whiskey Monday declined due to personal challenges that she’s since worked through by using Second Life as a medium for artistic expression.

"The anonymity in this virtual world gave me the bravery to be very very real. I was able to overcome a lot of issues by expressing myself creatively in Second Life!" she says.

Whiskey builds 3-dimensional sets inworld, then creates 2-dimensional images from them in her popular Second Life photography. One of the interesting things about her process is that she thrives on the impermanence of her builds and the process of deleting them once she has achieved her vision. While the image remains, the space in which the image was taken is gone.

Linden Lab

This episode of the Drax Files: World Makers focuses on the “perfectly imperfect” perspective of Nylon Pinkney. Nylon Pinkney is the owner of the virtual clothing and accessories store Nylon Outfitters - a brand that Drew Carey has mentioned as a favorite - and even had a hand in designing some of the original starter avatars in Second Life.

As a wedding photographer who deals with challenging clients in her offline career, Nylon enjoys expressing her whimsical artistic side in Second Life - applying her skills t o her brands as well as her region - Tableau. Check out Tableau for what Nylon describes as a “bombed out southwestern desert” from a Jersey girl’s point-of-view.

Watch the

below for the full story on how working in Second Life has helped her to grow as artist, how it has uncovered some interesting niche communities, and more of Nylon Pinkney’s distinctive sense of Second Life style.
