Find your inner calm at Shamatha in Second Life, a Buddhist-inspired virtual healing retreat, full of peaceful nooks and crannies and inspiring open spaces, welcoming you to discover your inner center.

A practicing Buddhist herself, owner Aire Xaris feels that mindfulness is something the world can use a little more of and she wanted to create a space where Residents could find some peace or tranquility. 

“It is my Zen to create these scenes”, Aire says and adds that “if this place encourages someone to feel less anxious, or angry or sad by visiting, then it is worth it. What is so funny is that it took me so long to find out what it actually was that brings me the most joy out of playing with these digital crayons that Philip Rosedale gave us back in 2003.”

Aire expands on the name she gave her region, Shamatha: “It literally means to stop and I really like it when people tell me that they've been inspired to look into meditation, or that they fell asleep while sitting up in the big moon sleepscape I built.”

This serene region is a place of wonder. The magnificent structures that dot the landscape provide a sense of peace for those who wander its paths.

Shamatha

Shamatha is a place of stopping. A digital Buddhist community and Nature preserve that offers a variety of scenes landscaped and designed to calm and offer the traveler refuge through guided meditation. There is a free interactive Wind light and meditation music Hud and teleport gates that lead to private and picturesque areas throughout the region. All are welcome to take refuge and discover their inner calm.

It’s hard to believe that Second Life’s 19th birthday is around the corner. Over the years, I have continued to enjoy discovering new and interesting places to explore across the grid. However, I also appreciate looking back at some of the OG destinations that have left a lasting impression. Their longevity is a testament to the value of creation in SL, and you should absolutely check them out!

Using the Second Life Origins category on the Destination Guide, revisit some of the earliest and historically significant locations and landmarks in Second Life. Here are just some of my favorites.

SS Galaxy

Established in 2007, SS Galaxy, also known as the Queen of the Sagittarian Sea, is an enormous, full-featured cruise ship that spans three regions and offers an array of activities, just like a real world cruise!

The Man

"The Man" statue is one of the only surviving objects from the original "Linden Town" area that was developed in Second Life during the earliest Alpha stage of its development. At times, The Man has served as a shrine where miscellaneous offerings were left, and a celebration of the creativity SL was founded upon.

Climbable Beanstalk

One of the oldest objects in SL is a beanstalk, created by Steller Sunshine in 2003. An influential model of organic shapes in a whimsical style, Steller used to hold contests challenging Residents to jump from leaf to leaf — can you make it to the top?

Da Boom

Visit Da Boom, the very first region in Second Life, founded in 2002. It's named after the real-life "De Boom" street in San Francisco, and Residents have speculated it's also a reference to the "Big Bang" of our virtual world's conception.

Svarga

Climb on top of a giant wasp and take a guided tour of this tropical island, which first opened in 2006. Explore the library inside the central tower, relax near the spring fountain, or start an impromptu jam session with some peculiar elven instruments inside the playhouse.

Lost Gardens of Apollo

Established in 2005, the Lost Gardens of Apollo is a relaxing and romantic spot with beautiful gardens, waterfalls, and secluded places to snuggle.

Chouchou

Since 2008, Japanese music group Chouchou has brought their creativity to Second Life in several photogenic and atmospheric regions, including "Memento Mori," "Islamey" and "The Babel."

Japan Tempura Island

Established in 2008, Tempura Island has been a popular destination for socializing, romance, and healing. Explore the forest, dance in the ballroom, wander through the temple and meditate amidst the Japanese motif.

The Far Away

A blast from the past! Featured in The New York Times! The Far Away is an interactive 3D art installation in Second Life. First built in 2007 by AM Radio, now curated by Ziki Questi and Kinnaird Resident.

Pooley Foot

Once a remote site where applicants for the first Linden Liaison team were interviewed, curious events caused the island to transform into a rather big foot. This isn't the only cultural spot in the area: head north to see what an early Orientation Island looked like, and eastward are stages that were used for early town hall chats.

The Citadel - The Legion Chronicles

The event stamp for the Bellisseria Passport will be the 300th issued. There are also stamps to collect from buoys at sea on the Boat Rally at their opening party and from Belli's bureaucrats and diplomats.

Happy new year and welcome to the first Second Life Destination Guide highlights post for 2022! I thought for the new year since people are just wrapping up the winter attractions, I'd focus on some of the Linden Lab maintained destinations on the guide. We even have a new category for them called Linden Destinations. We've slowly been adding all the different areas that the moles have been working on, including the community areas around the Linden Home regions in Bellisseria. They are all open to the public, even if you are not a Bellisseria Resident. You can also head over to Portal Park and complete some of the quests and find new games and adventures!

This public community center is for the Bellisseria Fantasy Homes regions. Surrounded by lush landscaping, this masterpiece of design is a feast for the eyes.

Campwich Lodge

Campwich Lodge is a public community center for the Camper Linden Homes regions. Located in a secluded rural area, this lodge has many places to hang out, relax and socialize with others. It is right across from Campwich Station, another public community area where you can rez your locomotives on the rails in designated rezz zones and drive them through the park. Sit back and enjoy the beautiful landscaping and the calming waterfalls.

Die Betrunken Maus (The Drunken Mouse)

Die Betrunken Maus is the crown jewel of the Bellisseria Chalet regions. Virtual beer is on tap 24/7 and last call is at never o'clock. Set in the peaks along a winding river, this alpine-style inn serves the public for meetups and socializing.

Randelsham Treehouse

Randelsham Treehouse is the community center for the Bellisseria Log Homes regions. Surrounded by stunning natural scenery this treehouse has lots of seating including hanging chairs on the balcony and a large separate deck with even more seating. There is also a ridable bubble rezzer to float around the area, a rez zone on the water, several zip lines, and a train depot next to the SLRR. Hang out, explore, and make new friends!

Java Sprockets

Grab a cup of fresh coffee or a bite to eat at Java Sprockets, a beachside coffee shop. Out front is a Rez Zone where you can pick up a free bicycle and enjoy a ride around Bellisseria. Everyone is welcome and everything is free! Java Sprockets is a community area in Bellisseria that offers all a place to hang out and chat.

This will be the final Destination Guide highlights post for this year. I hope to continue them in the new year, with weekly updates on what's new on the Second Life Destination Guide. In the year 2022, we hope to give the Destination Guide a much-needed facelift and possibly a few other changes, which I am really looking forward to!

Snowdrops is a family-friendly photogenic winter destination with many activities for the whole family! Winter has arrived at the Bellisseria Fairgrounds! Snowhaven returns to welcome the Second Life community to a rustic winter retreat until December 29th. Walk across the bridge to explore the trails and find hidden areas. Enjoy winter activities using the provided equipment or bring your own. The large red ornaments are teleporters. Come visit and have fun!

The Glass Slipper

'Tis The Season at this Winter Wonderland at Moochie for all things festive this winter. Pictured: A Christmas Wish

On Lab Gab today, Tara Linden and I went to several different winter destinations using the Destination Guide. I thought in today's blog post I would share all the destinations we went to. You can watch today's episode of Lab Gab on YouTube.

We started the show at the 2021 Shop & Hop showing off some of the goodies we picked up there. Then we headed over to the Swaginator Hunt, completed the hunt, and walked around with our Linden Bear winnings. After that, we went to Winter Wonderland and showed how to use the snow pistols so you will be all set for the Linden & Resident Snowball fight next week. Then we bounced around using the Destination Guide to different regions where we went skiing, horseback riding, and just enjoying the wonderful atmosphere of the beautiful locations, all listed in the Winter Attractions category on the Destination Guide. These are the destinations we teleported around to:

Coeur Lac d'Annecy Ski Resort

The Coeur Lac d'Annecy Ski Resort has two slopes for timed skiing. The scoreboard on the western slope shows your best 3 runs, while the eastern slope scoreboard tracks up to 8 skiers at a time. There is a ski lift to the summit or take the cable car in the lower lodge to the ground for cross country skiing or ice skating over 6 regions.

A Christmas Wish

Calas Galadhon Park celebrates its 13th SL winter with another immersive 2 region holiday build. Whether riding one of its well-loved sleigh tours through the snow-covered countryside, taking in the view from the balloon, exploring on foot or horseback, ice skating, attending a live music event at the Calas Christmas Pavilion or cuddling in one of its cozy cabins, you'll be sure to experience the magic and spirit of this special time of the year!

Travel to this serene and quiet winter village high in the mountains; a place of peace and relaxation. Ride a horse in the snow, ice skate, wander about, or dance on the Winter-Sky Esplanade. The hot air balloon tours the two region span of Winterland. Bungee jump, zipline, or jetskii. You'll find lots of winter activities and romance at this picturesque location.

15th Annual SL Veterans Tribute

Pictured: Whitby - Birth of Dracula

This may be the final weekend you are able to visit some of the amazing spooky locations in the Haunted category on the Destination Guide. I have featured many throughout the month and Tara Linden and I also went through a couple of haunted experiences in today's Lab Gab.  

Here are destinations that I haven't featured in a highlights blog post yet this year. A lot of these are closing right after Halloween, so visit soon. The remaining ones will stay in the Haunted category until they close. Happy Halloween!

Whitby - Birth of Dracula

Whitby is a real seaside town and port, in the northeast of England. It was here in 1890 that Bram Stoker was inspired to write his novel Dracula. The Town is now also famous for its Steampunk weekend once a year when it is overrun by the weird and wonderful. This build by Hera (zee9) is based far more on the FF Coppola Movie than the book and is nothing much at all like reality. It also has a very strong Lovecraftian feel and is sort of English Innsmouth. Visit this destination in 1880s, Victorian, Vampire, and Steampunk apparel. Enjoy and Happy Halloween!

The Scarlett Hotel

Welcome to DRD's first immersive game/hunt: The Scarlett Hotel! Its numerous deaths and disappearances over the years have made this hotel infamous for its hauntings. Hushed is an after-dark adventure at Dreamz Farm. Second Pride Glitter & Gore 2021

Second Pride's Glitter & Gore runs from 10/22-10/31. All proceeds will be donated to The Ali Forney Center, a non-profit providing shelter and healthcare to homeless LGBTQ youth in NYC. With 10 days of live performances from DJs, Singers, Dancers, and Media Artists, this is an event to bring everyone together for a scary good time on their Hellscape stage and dance floor.

Seasons Change at Peaceful Dreams

Pictured: Boystown Haunted Experience

We have over 100 Haunted Destinations currently on the Second Life Destination Guide, and there will be more coming over the next couple of weeks. There are also some wonderful events going on that we wanted to highlight today.

I went through the Boystown Haunted Experience today and it is incredible! I screamed several times, so many jump-scares! It's kind of like an escape room idea, and I made it to the end! Check out their trailer on YouTube.

The Dethly Halloween Experience

The 3rd Annual Interactive Trick-or-Treat Halloween Neighborhood and Carnival is open! Wear your costumes and visit each of the 25 uniquely decorated houses. Explore the fantastic haunted maze, abandoned park, creepy cemetery, spooky carnival, and Halloween-themed mini-golf course created by Solstice and Tales of Enchantment. The Ritual at Frogmore

Haunted Hollow 2021

Once Upon a Time, there was an Enchanted Hollow where tales gathered: tales of struggle and virtue, of light and looming darkness. The Darkness of Day

Charge Syndrome presents the Darkness of Day, an autumn and Halloween build. A serene and eerie space designed to feast upon your senses. One side designed with a light and fun autumn vibe, Cross the gorge through the mountains and find the dark side of Halloween. Another fantastic build by the queen of humorous fantasy Second Life artist Suzen Juel (Juel Resistance). Also featuring the best roller coaster, secluded in a dome in the sky. Manifestations NL

Manifestations NL is one of the virtual locations of the Dutch Design Week, the largest RL event of its kind in Northern Europe. Several 3D artists are involved and can be found through the special Manifestations land in SL. The tradition of a toy bear that may be given out by Linden Lab employees, and our Mole contractors, to Second Life Residents began in early 2005. The idea was simple: Anyone can ask a Linden or Mole for their bear. Each bear is personally crafted by an individual Linden or Mole, adding their own unique twist, and in some cases can be one of their first experiences in building. A special thank you to Claire Atheria & Maryposa Papillon (Maryposa Paine) for putting the Bear Castle together with 450+ Linden and Mole Bears!

World Space Week Virtual Event 2021

The Overlook at Cha

The Overlook at Cha is a getaway hotel for the rich and famous and those seeking a little escape from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of everyday life. The hotel recently closed for the season but there should be a caretaker around here someplace.
