Today we’re promoting a much-anticipated Viewer update called Project Interesting. Previously, available only in limited release, Project Interesting is now available gridwide as part of the default Second Life Viewer!

This update reduces the load and time it takes to draw objects in regions, meaning scenes appear more quickly and smoothly as you move throughout Second Life. To learn more, check out the

below:

A Viewer update that includes Project Interesting is now available. To start taking advantage of these performance improvements today, just download the latest Second Life Viewer (or allow your Viewer to update).

Project Interesting is one part of the ongoing and much larger Project Shining initiative, which brings a number of performance improvements to the Second Life experience. Today’s promotion of Project Interesting to the default Viewer means that two of the three bundled initiatives under Project Shining are now complete. The third and final project in this initiative (Sunshine) is in the home stretch, and we hope to promote it to the default Viewer soon - keep an eye on this blog for updates

As of 10am PT Wednesday, September 8, the Emerald Viewer will be blocked from logging in to Second Life as a result of violations of our Policy on Third Party Viewers. Residents who have been using any version of the Emerald Viewer will need to use a different Viewer to access Second Life. You can download the official Second Life Viewer, developed by Linden Lab, here. Or you can learn more about alternative Viewers, developed by third parties, here. There are several new Viewers listed in the TPV Directory, so there are many alternatives available to you.

We take Residents’ privacy, safety, and security very seriously and will take action to enforce the policies that help protect it. As our CEO, Philip Rosedale, has blogged about, we recently removed the Emerald Viewer from our Third-Party Viewer Directory due to violations of our Policy on Third-Party Viewers.

Since then, we have been in communication with the Emerald development team and have requested several changes in order to remedy violations of our policy, including changes necessary to meet our privacy requirements, and to address GPL license violations. Unfortunately, the team was unable to comply within a stipulated time frame. As a result, we have decided to block logins from the Emerald Viewer in order to protect our Residents. All versions of the Emerald Viewer will be blocked from logging in to Second Life as of tomorrow at 10am. Please be aware that attempting to circumvent our blocking to access Second Life with a banned Viewer is a violation of the Policy on Third-Party Viewers and may result in the loss of one's account.

We're excited to introduce Linden Realms, where Residents can dive directly into exploring the towers, caves and valleys of the Lab's first-ever game prototype. Dodge rock monsters and fierce fireballs as you cross deadly, toxic rivers to complete quests and cash in your crystals for Linden Dollars. And that's just the beginning...

Quests take you through the basics of game-play in Second Life while you earn Linden Dollars. You’ll start at Basecamp on Tyrah’s Island, where you’ll have your pick of exciting destinations to choose from!

  • Sunspire — Investigate a tower of experiments in teleportation and astronomy.
  • Shattered Cavern — Go deep into an intricate system of caves that snake down under a small mountain.
  • Devil's Canyon — Brave a  dangerous valley of fire and rock monsters, where the courageous are rewarded.
  • Whisper Hollow — Hike through a forest full of secrets and obstacles.
  • Banshee Peak — Soar above it all at the northernmost point of the island and admire the view of Whisper Hollow.
  • Tyrah's Peak — Scale the snowy peak overlooking the center of the island and the Basecamp.
  • Dark Moon Bay — Explore this southernmost point of the island, where Tyrah wrecked her ship and hopes to eventually escape.

Our teams dove deep into the inworld creation process during development, and are eager to share some improved tools that came out of this effort. Residents will soon be able to use those tools to create even richer original experiences in Second Life.

The L$/US$ exchange rate briefly experienced fluctuations for approximately one week in June. At the time, we interpreted this as being due to a number of factors, including uncertainty over our recent reorganization. Further research has shown  this was also caused by the effect of merging Residents’ inworld and XStreet SL account balances in late March. Previously, Residents had two separate balances: one for inworld transactions, and one for XStreet SL transactions. Merging those balances provided a more convenient, efficient way for Residents to maintain and spend their L$ balance. Residents are no longer keeping a higher than historical average L$ balance across their two accounts and this process of reducing their  total balances caused new L$ purchases to temporarily be lower while  these “extra” L$ were used and/or added to the selling volume if the L$ were taken out of the economy. At this time, total Resident L$ balances have stabilized and are no longer falling.

exchange rate, june.png

Despite this temporary uncertainty and related market impact that caused sell volumes to briefly spike beyond purchase demand during one week, trading activity and the exchange rate have since returned to near historical levels.

The L$ exchange rate is a floating rate that can change based on supply and demand. Although Linden Lab employs a variety of methods including  sinks, sources, and selling L$ from time to time, and tries to maintain a relatively stable money supply and exchange rate, we are committed to allowing the economy to fluctuate based on its own market forces. As in the real-world economy, these market forces can sometimes result in changes that can affect businesses positively or negatively in Second Life.

For more information on the Second Life economy in the second quarter, read today’s blog post.

Yesterday, The Drax Files: World Makers, Episode 2 won the Best Machinima award at the New Media Film Festival - a festival that explores storytelling through new media technologies - congratulations to Draxtor Despres!

This episode predates Linden Lab's sponsorship of the series, but the compelling story it tells, the awesome Second Life creativity it highlights, and the high production quality are all great examples of why we're proud to support the series.

We asked Drax about his win and this is what he had to say:

To have our little mini documentary played on the big screen & observe the audience reaction is extremely gratifying.

For me there is no greater reward than seeing preconceived notions and misperceptions about Second Life fall by the wayside and being replaced by understanding of what virtual worlds can be.

It becomes clear  that for these folks this is the first time the possibilities of  virtual reality for education and historical study are being presented in this way .

I am also very grateful for Jo and all the others who are portrayed in these videos because when they come forward and put up the courage to let a camera capture their "real" life they become spokespeople for all of us and hopefully inspire others to "come out" and tell their story!

It was literally this morning that I found out this fun fact: Jingle Bells was originally a Thanksgiving song - called One Horse Open Sleigh. Guess it didn’t catch on so much - and evolved into the tune we all know today as an anthem for the winter holidays.

While we are just heading into the Thanksgiving holiday here in the US, all over the Grid, Second Life has started to look like a twinkling wonderland - with snow, sleighs, and fairy lights galore.

This week’s destination video highlights one such spot - Moochies - Tis the Season. A gorgeous and cozy spot to ease you into the holiday spirit, Moochies is vibrant and bright. Be sure to wrap yourself in a warm winter coat and pay it a visit. Be sure to take a ride on the no horse open sleigh as well!

Second Life is home to several impressive 3D replicas of places and landmarks in the physical world, so it is no surprise that many in the community have been praising the presence and detail found in Rieri. This contemporary Japanese location is inspired by Tokyo’s Arakawa Lock Gate region and was modeled from Google Maps and real photos of Tokyo neighborhoods.

Learn more about Rieri in this week’s Destinations video, which is narrated by Resident pokute Burt (who cites Rieri as one of his favorite spots in Second Life). (Note: If you don’t see the English language captions automatically, be sure to turn them on for the full translation).

To get even more insight to the making and magic of Rieri, we recommend that you also check out the official video tour from Rieri project architect/director Eripom Moonwall and her team.

Better yet, see Rieri for yourself in Second Life - no plane tickets required!

Second Life is full of generous communities who take the time to organize and support ongoing efforts to a number of great causes. Many of our Residents dedicate their time and resources to volunteer in the creation of events that educate and draw attention to important issues, allowing others to help donate and contribute through participation in Second Life.

Mysterious Paradise is such an event - running from now until August 3rd, 2019. Built on a Region steaming with virtual wildlife, music, shopping, and entertainment - all to help raise money for the World Animal Protection Organization. All donations and profits from the event will be donated to the organization - which works hard to protect and prevent animal cruelty across more than 50 countries.

Learn more about this event in this week’s Destination video - and visit before the event ends on August 3rd!

“Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.”  -
from Shakespeare’s Macbeth

Oh, there are strange ( and stranger) things afoot, and all over the Grid, Residents and Creators alike are brewing up some Halloween mischief. It is -- after all -- one of the most exciting and celebrated holidays in Second Life!

All Hallows Eve, Samhain. Hallow E’en - a time when the spookiest, kookiest, and most mystical of mayhem rolls into our world like a thick and possibly sentient fog. The veil between the living and the departed grows thin, and everywhere you look, you see pumpkins, skeletons, ghosts, and ghouls. And don’t forget the treats, and sweets, and tricks and broomsticks - it’s magical!

This week’s destination video highlights just a few of the scarier Regions you can experience in Second Life, and while many embrace the spookier side of things all year round, be sure to haunt the Haunted category of the Destination Guide, throw on your favorite costume, and explore. Then join us on Halloween from 11 am to 2 pm SLT for our annual Creepy Crawl. More details on the schedule for that are coming …

Locations featured in this video are:

These regions are made by well-known UK-based designer Lauren Bentham, whose work - with her unique style that includes delicate windlight design - includes more lighthearted fare such as beaches and other relaxation spots.

Einstein is alleged to have once stated, “Imagination will take you everywhere.” We tend to agree! A sense of adventure is one of the most exciting things about Second Life. You can explore and experience so many places from the past, present, future, and from the imagination - and you can bounce from one to the other with a single teleport.

The element of journey and discovery that Creators in Second Life build and breathe life into is something that is difficult to replicate anywhere else - which is why we enjoy highlighting these destinations on the blogs, our social pages, and in these destination videos. There is so much to experience and see across the Grid!

This week, we’re highlighting Escapades Island - a conglomerate of fantastical and whimsical genres to tease your imagination. If you think you’ve seen it all - think again! Escapades Island has just undergone some new construction, and is now revamped and ready for daring and curious adventurers alike. You’re going to want to plan a trip with your best friends to embark together on this playful and whimsical trip.

Watch this small glimpse into what you can expect, then hop in for yourself and prepare to discover something exciting and new!

Over the years, the look of Second Life has always been enhanced by the creativity of content creators and the surprising ways in which the community finds to express itself. That can be anything from the avatar enhancements we’ve seen in mesh and Bento mesh, to laser shows and special effects, performances and art, and even the ancient days of particles and bling ( yes - bling was a thing!).

Second Life has always been brimming with visually interesting assets, so it is exciting to see the sheer amount of creativity on display this month at E.V.E. as it celebrates its fourth anniversary with impressive contributions from acclaimed artists Bryn Oh, Regi Yifu and Cica Ghost. E.V.E creator and owner Noke Yuitza is also an accomplished artist with works that can be seen throughout the Imaginarium Region. With themes that range from surreal, fantastic, dystopian, and other retro-futuristic ideas, you’ll want to visit these special creations before they disappear at the end of September.

Take a sneak peek in the video below or on the Destinations Channel of our Official YouTube.

You can visit the following art installations at E.V.E until September 29th:

From the invited artists:

•   SKY FISHING, some artworks by Bryn Oh
•   UNDER THE SEA?, by Regi Yifu
•   TALES FROM THE CROCODILE, by Cica Ghost

Works by E.V.E. creator and owner Noke Yuitza:
•   DREAMER BOY – Scene: Mirror
•   ELF 2255
•   MUSIC MACHINE – Elfic Bells Notes

Currently Unlimited Installations by Noke Yuitza
•   Permanent: ETHEREAL SHAPES – Stage 1: The Dreamer
•   Permanent: INFERNO – Scene Scatha the Dragon: The 2 Shapes

One of the many incredible things about Second Life and virtual worlds, is that you can travel to places that may be otherwise out of reach and experience some of the culture and adventure without the jet lag or the travel costs. These places can be outside the scope of our world - eras long past or places that never existed - or they can be inspired by places that exist in the physical world. France, England, Japan, and many other countries are just a teleport away.

Monash University’s Chinese Island is a place that virtually represents a Chinese township, where you can experience some of the things that reflect everyday life in China.

Kaylee West teaches students about Chinese language and culture at Monash University in Australia, and he has created and curated Chinese Island in Second Life as a way for anyone to get a taste of the Chinese culture from wherever they may be in the world. You can visit the website for more information about the project.

To catch a glimpse of what Chinese Island is like, you may watch this destination video, but we highly recommend that you login to your Second Life account and plan a trip to visit it inworld - just use the Destination Guide link here or  below the video.

Have you ever thought about writing your own Medieval novel? Hold court, joust, ride forth into battle on the back of your trusted steed, or simply embrace the photogenic romance of living in an era long passed - it’s all possible in SL.

That’s where communities like MYSTVALE and other role-playing communities within Second Life come in. Tailored to immerse you in an experience that blends history and fantasy together, and allows you to begin making your own history through creative story-telling. Talk about choosing your own adventure!

Put on your favorite medieval outfit, grab your preferred party of adventurers, and cross the virtual veil into MYSTVALE.

This week’s Destinations video turns the spotlight on the many motorcycle clubs and biker communities in Second Life. Whether you are a casual or dedicated enthusiast, these communities and clubs serve as important social spaces where Residents can simply hang out, listen to music and/or take a ride on one of the many gravity-defying roads of Second Life.

Many of these clubs, such as the Legions of Vets, also have military veterans as members and hold events to raise money for nonprofits such as The Wounded Warriors and Homes For Our Troops. Also featured in the clip are Cobra MC World, Vipers MC and 4 Horsemen.

To get you started, we’ve created a new Motorcycles & Biker Clubs Destination Guide category dedicated to motorcycle and biker culture in Second Life. Are we missing any of your favorites? If so, submit your suggestions to the Destination Guide using our submission form or email us at editor@lindenlab.com.

The Hair Fair has been an annual staple of the Second Life event scene for several years now. Residents look forward each year to the opportunity to shop for new hair for their avatars and do so for a good cause.

Sasy Scarborough, Mel Vanbeeck, and Whimsy Winx have organized another Hair Fair this year (now through September 1st) with a wealth of options for even the most discerning and selective of hair shoppers. Three Regions and Cam Shopping areas are sure to provide a rich shopping experience to those who visit.

Exclusive items are marked with percentages of proceeds that are given to the non-profit organization Wigs for Kids  - and Hair Fair has raised tens of thousands of USD in donations made from inworld sales and purchases by Second Life Residents. That’s an incredible feat and one that Sasy, Whimsy and Mel are grateful for.

You can visit the Hair Fair through September at any of the following destinations:

Hair Regions

Hair Fair 2019 - Redhead Region
Hair Fair 2019 - Noirette Region
Hair Fair 2019 - Blonde Region

Cam Shopping Regions

Hair Fair 2019 - Streaks
Hair Fair 2019 - Brunette (aka Perm)
Hair Fair 2019 - Foils

Be sure to allow yourself time to explore all three Regions so as not to miss anything.

We are pleased to announce two changes that make it less expensive to get your own Private Island in Second Life!

Price Drop for Land Set-up Fees

  • Developed Full Private Island - previously $1029, now $629
  • Homestead Private Island - previously $375, now $225
  • Developed Homestead Private Island - previously $395, now $250
  • Openspace Private Island - previously $250, now $150

Qualified educational and nonprofit organizations will continue to receive a 50% discount off the applicable set-up fee (as well as 50% off ongoing maintenance fees). For more information about our discount program, please visit this page.

Transferring Regions with Grandfathered Pricing

Previously, Private Islands with grandfathered pricing would lose that status and revert to the usual schedule of land maintenance fees when the regions were transferred to a new owner. Today, we are changing that policy to make it easier for these regions to remain on the grid if and when they are sold to new owners.

Effective immediately, both Grandfathered Full Private Island regions ($195/month) and Grandfathered Homestead Private Island regions ($95/month) may be transferred to new owners without losing the discounted pricing. However, the one-time fee for transferring grandfathered regions will be higher than the usual transfer fee, as follows:

  • Transfer of a Full Island, maintaining grandfathered pricing: $600/each
  • Transfer of a Homestead Island, maintaining grandfathered pricing: $300/each

The standard fee will still apply to all other region transfers, as well as if you choose to give up grandfathered pricing when transferring a previously grandfathered region.

Today we are pleased to bring Animesh to Agni and one step closer to release.  Since last October, when we first introduced the Animesh Project, we’ve worked closely with the content creator community.   We’ve been holding User Content Meetings where we  listen to your ideas, make tweaks, and fine tune this feature.   We’ve come a long way since then and are excited to bring Animesh to the main grid (Agni) as part of the SLB15 Celebration.

https://gyazo.com/812fad81210f22a7f6290229a0a234f7

Examples courtesy of Silas Merlin

For those of you who are unfamiliar with this project, Animesh is a new Second Life feature which allows independent objects to use rigged mesh and animations, just as you see today with mesh avatars. This means that you can now have wild animals, pets, vehicles, scenery features, and other objects which play animations!

To use Animesh, you will need to be in a region that’s running the latest Animesh simulator build. Currently the enabled regions are those in the Bluesteel RC channel. You will also need the latest Animesh-enabled viewer, which you can find on the alternate viewers page

If you would like to learn more, we have the Animesh Forums where our users have been sharing their questions, ideas, and examples of what they’ve been working on.   We also have an Animesh User Guide to help you jump into Animesh along with a weekly Content User Group meeting. More documentation will be coming soon!

A special thanks to Lucia Nightfire for coming up with the name Animesh!
