Linden Lab

Here at Linden Lab, we’re deeply committed to ensuring the safety and security of our customers’ data. It’s why we began preparing for the May 25th implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) more than a year ago, and it’s why we want to alert you not only to some of the privacy enhancements we’ve made on our end, but also the ways the new law may impact you.

GDPR, in a nutshell.
Put simply, the GDPR puts in place new requirements for the collection, maintenance, and use of personal data for residents of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA). It’s an important evolution in privacy practices, and one we’ve already started to account for: if you notice, our existing Privacy Policy already discloses the type of personal data we collect from you, how we use and limit any sharing of your data, and your rights to control our use of your personal data.

What you can expect.
In coming weeks, we’ll provide more information on how EU residents in Second Life can best exercise their rights under GDPR. In some cases, you may take actions through your account dashboard (to modify your personal data, for instance). In others, it may be necessary to file a support ticket and verify your identity (to better protect your privacy).

What you should know.
If you collect or process personal data of EU residents on a website associated with Second Life or Sansar, or create or make use of programs that retain information about Second Life or Sansar users or their computers, you may also have obligations under the GDPR. You should consult with your legal counsel for advice regarding your site(s) or program(s).

If you would like to learn more about the GDPR, here are some overviews:

If you believe that your service may be subject to GDPR requests, here is more information:

If you have additional questions about the GDPR, we found these references helpful:

Games Made in SL.png

We know that role-playing, fantasy, and gamified events like board games, adventures, and murder mysteries are popular in Second Life. The idea of playing a part in a story and interpreting the world around you through your character can be a great deal of fun, and therapeutic for many.

Naturally, with both role-playing and gaming experiences being popular in our virtual world, a blend of the two would find its way onto the Grid in the form of the well known ‘tabletop’ style of game play.

ChuuAkamine has taken his love for the Sorcery! Gamebook by Steve Jackson, and his favorite map cartographer (Mike Schley) as inspiration for his own projects in Second Life - functional dioramas that work with the Tabletop system from Remnant Ashbourne of  /studioDire/.

These dioramas are interactive, engaging ways to allow tabletop style gameplay in the vein of Dungeons & Dragons within Second Life. ChuuAkamine has started business creating and selling these dioramas and miniatures for others to enjoy - Mini A Chuu.

This week’s “Made in SL” video is glimpse into these works. Take a look at the video below, and check out these cool creations inworld. You can also learn more about Mini A Chuu on the Life of Chuu blog.

UPDATE: Currently, new Linden Homes are sold out - but more are on the way. Please stay tuned to our blog and to this forum thread for updates.

New Linden Homes Have Arrived!

One of the many benefits of becoming a Premium Second Life member is access to an automatic waiver of the monthly land fees for a Linden Home or 1024m² tier allotment for use towards a parcel on the Mainland. A pretty incredible perk, but it was time to make it even perkier.

Let’s be honest - those Linden Homes from 2010 were long overdue for some updates and improvements. It was clear a fresh coat of paint and some new landscaping were just not going to make the amount of curb appeal we were shooting for. In fact, it was time to return to the drawing board and start a better-built Linden Home experience, from the ground up - literally.

The first of several planned Linden Home updates launches today - with the introduction of New Linden Homes - exclusive to Premium members. Your new home may be in the mountains, along the shore, or in a rolling landscape of low hills and river valleys, but you’ll also be part of a large community experience, with navigable waterways, a network of roads, and community areas to socialize and have fun.

There are two new themed styles in this release - Traditional and Houseboats - and some are twice as big as previous Linden Home offerings.

Traditional

New_home_new_chapter.jpg

Our new Traditional suburban homes are available in several single or two-story options and are located within a convenient distance from a communal park area where you can join your friends for picnics, sports, or family activities.

Houseboats

1Snapshot_045.jpg

For something a bit less conventional, try one of the many new Houseboat theme options with large rooms and a high ceiling and skylights. There’s also a deck area outside for you to relax or entertain friends and family under the blue skies and over the even bluer waters!

Existing Premium Member with Linden Homes

Out with the old, and in with the new! If you’re already a Premium Member, you qualify to switch to a new Linden Home in one of our new styles including Traditional Homes and Houseboats. Old Linden Homes will be phased out over time, but there’s no rush. If you’re not ready to make the big move, that’s okay.  Many of these new home options are twice the size of previous offerings, and even more new Linden Homes are coming later this year. Once you’ve seen the improvements and additions,  you’re going to want to claim your new place to call home as soon as possible.

How to Get Started

Moving into a new place may seem a bit overwhelming, but we’ve got you covered. Everything you need to know about the new Linden Homes is available on the New Linden Homes wiki. There is a walk-through on how to claim your new Home if you’re new or returning to Premium Membership, or if you’re an existing Premium member and ready to make the switch. All the details on what makes these new homes better than ever, and the how-tos to get you into your new place are all there.

Are you ready for your new life on the Bellisseria continent? Now may be the perfect time to upgrade to Premium!  Your new home is waiting for you!

Imagine yourself in a jungle on a remote island brimming with possible adventures and spectacular flora and fauna to explore. Now, imagine that remote island jungle is what we’ve come to call the Second Life grid, and imagine that you are … a Velociraptor! Sounds a little bit like a pretty weird but cool dream, right?

Well you no longer have to imagine the dream - you can live it with the Second Life 12th Anniversary commemorative avatar! Pick up your free avatar at Hairy Hippo Fun Land or off the Marketplace before this raptor becomes extinct at the end of July!

Celebrate SL12B in Ferocious Style for a Chance to Win L$10,000

Now that you’ve got your raptor - it’s time to take ‘em for a test drive. Share snapshots of your raptor avatar celebrating SL12B to the Second Life 12th Anniversary Snapshot Contest from now until July 20th, and you could win 1 of 4 incredible prizes - L$10,000 , L$5,000, L$3,000, or L$1,000!

Be creative! This limited-edition raptor has the entirety of the grid to seek out a picture-perfect spot to take a winning snapshot - but a good place to start is the SL12B Destination Guide category.

Fitted Mesh Is Here!

Today, we're happy to announce that Fitted Mesh is available in the main Second Life Viewer! As we've previously blogged, Fitted Mesh gives Second Life content creators the power to craft mesh garments that make avatars look their absolute best. We’d like to thank the vibrant community of creators for their thoughtful feedback and help testing this feature.

below, then update your Viewer to the latest release and get creative with Fitted Mesh!

We’re excited to announce that the first set of advanced creator tools, which includes the Teleport Agent and Temporary Attachment launched today.

Teleport Agent
The Teleport Agent is a new LSL call that allows scripts to teleport agents to a particular SLURL or local position. You can now create "portals" or even objects that cause an instant teleport upon being touched.

For scavenger hunts, this tool might be used to instantly direct participants to the next clue or location after they discover a hidden item.

However, there are plenty of other possibilities to consider. In Linden Realms, we used the same feature to "return" players to a safe location after they made contact with any pursuing rock monsters.

We look forward to seeing what innovative uses our creative community comes up with for the Teleport Agent.

Temporary Attachment
Temporary Attachment allows you to create temporary objects like demo attachments or “region specific” gear, without creating unnecessary inventory to manage.* In the context of shopping, you now can try on outfits or accessories before you purchase them.  Think having the ability to "try before you buy.”

In other examples, an author can provide some unique ways to present information via the HUD.  The next time a visitor enters your establishment, you can push on-screen notifications out to them with ease.

This tool is as versatile as the creator’s ingenuity.  How will you use Temporary Attachment?

*It’s important to note that Temporary Attachment is NOT forced attachment. We accomplish Temporary Attachment through our Experience Permissions system requiring an opt-in scenario for the recipient.

Linden Lab

The ability to redeem Linden dollars for real money on the LindeX is an incredible facet of Second Life. We believe that creators should be able to profit from their creativity, and we’re proud of the success that Second Life creators have achieved. Last year, users redeemed $60 million (USD) from the Second Life economy, and for many, the virtual world is a significant source of real income.

Enabling users around the world to buy and sell Linden Dollars for real currency is no small feat. This involves Linden Lab making sure that everything is compliant with applicable laws and regulations, as well as preventing fraud and money laundering.

We’ve been investing in improvements to these processes, and today we’re announcing improved speeds for credit processing, as well as some fee adjustments.

Faster Credit Processing

We’re happy to announce that we will significantly improve how quickly we’re able to process a majority of credit requests.

Based on current data, we estimate that the upgrades we’ve made will allow approximately 75% of process credit requests to be completed within 2 business days.

For a minority of requests, the process may still take 5 business days. Because we’re dealing with sending real money to users around the world, we may require additional information and perform other processes that could impact the time needed. A good rule of thumb is that the better we know you as a customer, the more likely it is we’ll be able to quickly process your credit requests.

Upcoming Changes to Fees

In addition to taking time, processing credit and paying real money to users’ PayPal and Skrill accounts incurs costs to Linden Lab. Each transaction actually costs us more than the $1 (USD) fee we have been charging. To address that and in light of the significant investments we’ve made to improve the related systems and processes, we will be making some adjustments to the fee structure, beginning next month.

As of April 5, 2016, instead of charging a flat fee of $1 (USD) per transaction, we will charge a fee of 1.5% of the transaction value, with a minimum fee of $3 (USD) and a maximum of $15 (USD). Additionally, the fee for purchasing L$ on the LindeX will increase 10¢, from $0.30 (USD) to $0.40 (USD) per transaction.

We hope that you’ll enjoy the improved speed of credit processing and understand that these upcoming fee updates help to support the complex work involved in enabling Second Life users to buy and sell Linden Dollars for real money at a massive scale, all while keeping the system reliable, safe, compliant with regulations - and now faster.

Linden Lab

We’ve been working hard on some major changes to Second Life’s Viewer and back-end infrastructure to improve the Second Life experience for all users. Today, we’re pleased to share an update on Project Shining - an initiative that will make avatars load and rez more quickly and reliably.

We’ve tested changing of outfits, avatar swapping, and initial avatar loading into worlds, and our tests showed performance gains across the board. Bottom line, Second Life users will experience less time in “clouded” or untextured avatar states and/or completely failed bakes that require relogs. Check out

for more about the project.

Project Sunshine is rolling out in three steps:

1) A required Viewer update, out now! The official Second Life Viewer (version 3.5.1 and later) includes important updates you’ll need to enjoy the benefits of Project Sunshine, so update today if you haven’t yet.  Actively updated Third Party Viewers also already have Sunshine-enabled versions available.

2) A server-side update, rolling out soon. It’s at this point that you’ll begin to notice significant improvements in avatar and object load times and reliability. But if you haven’t updated your Viewer, avatars won’t look right to you when we roll out the server update, so seriously, update now!

3) A second Viewer update, released after the server-side improvements are rolled out. As long as you have the Viewer 3.5.1 or later (available now), avatars won’t look wrong for you, but this second Viewer update will be needed to get the full benefits of Project Sunshine.

Get on your way to a better, faster, and more reliable Second Life experience and update to the latest Viewer today!

Fashion Made in SL.png

Our  “Made in Second Life” series continues with the first installment focusing on virtual world fashion creators - “Fashion Made in SL.”

Many people who start off in Second Life as Residents find that they enjoy exploring creating virtual goods inworld. Fashion, hair, home decor, accessories, and unique items that allow the community to express itself more freely and for individual Residents to customize their avatar in ways that are not possible anywhere else.

“If you are able to transport something that others can feel, then you’ve reached the goal,” says creator xxsaltandpepperxx, whose brand Salt & Pepper can be found inworld, at events, and on the marketplace.

Interactive products and designs are one of the things xxsaltandpepperxx likes to focus on - such as clothing items that interact with default Second Life water or a special “water gun” and change textures to a wet look. While she admits that these are not always the kind of items she would wear, she enjoys creating them, and the flexibility that applying her degree and skills to make a living doing so in Second Life affords. It allows her to balance her work and life in a way that benefits her family.

Find out more in the video below, and visit the Region inworld - there is a main store to peruse as well as horseback riding and beautiful views to explore.

Our  “Made in Second Life” series focuses on various aspects of the many creative and incredible things going on in Second Life. We saw such an amazing response to our “Love Made in Second Life” series, and we have since expanded to other areas such as “Fashion Made in SL,” “Games Made in SL,” and “Learning Made in SL.”

This week our second installment of “Fashion Made in SL” debuts, featuring Second Life creator Maximillion Grant  - owner and creator of the LOGO brand which specializes among other things in mesh heads for your avatar.

"When it comes to mesh heads, my goal is to give people as much customization options as possible," says Grant. "I think interacting with customers is the most important thing you can do. You want to find out what people like but also what people don't like...I love the fact that I get to be creative."

Maximillion is only one of many creators who make and sell mesh heads and other mesh avatar parts in Second Life, which is why we created a Destination Guide category dedicated to several of them. These mesh avatar enhancements are very popular in Second Life, each offering a unique and different look and set of features to their customers.

Find out more in the video below, and visit the main store inworld if you would like to see more.

P.S. Our “Made In Second Life” series is always looking for new stories to share. Contact madeinsl@draxtor.com and tell us your story. You might be featured in a future episode of “Made in Second Life.” If you have a destination that you’d like to be considered for “Second Life Destinations,” then reach out to us via this suggestion form.

Today, is a bittersweet day. As planned, we have taken down the Avatars United site, as outlined in last week’s blog post. The Avatars United website now points to the main Second Life homepage.

Although many are sad to see Avatars United go, we are very excited that soon we'll be sharing more of our thinking as we explore how to integrate social networking capabilities, powered by Avatars United technology, directly into the Second Life experience. We want to make it even faster, easier, and more fun to find friends, build vibrant communities, and share the richness of Second Life.

For Avatars United members, we hope that you’ve taken advantage of the past week to save any pieces of content that you wanted to keep. And, if you have an account balance, then yesterday you should have received an email regarding your AU Coin refund. Expect another email later this week with more specifics on your individual account.

As I stated before, a big thanks to all Avatars United members and we encourage you to reestablish your connection with friends--and find new ones--in Second Life. See you there soon!

Experience Tools are a powerful new feature that make it possible for creators to build more seamless and immersive experiences. Experience-enabled scripts allow each user to opt-in to an entire multiple-script experience, rather than being interrupted by lots of dialog boxes from each individual scripted object. New capabilities for persistent key/value data storage are also shared across all scripts in an Experience, reducing the need for complex and time consuming object-to-object communication.

:

As of today, this exciting creative power is available to all Premium subscribers, and every Second Life user can enjoy participating in these seamless experiences with a new Viewer that makes it easy to manage all of your experience permissions.

This project has already helped bring a more immersive experience to The Cornfield, Linden Realms and other Second Life experiences you can find through our Portal Parks. Don’t forget to check out all the Resident-created experiences in our Destination Guide too!

Make sure you’ve updated to the latest Viewer or visit our download page to get it. This latest release allows you to manage all of your experiences whether you’re a creator or participant.

UPDATE: the maintenance has been completed and all should be back to normal. Thank you again for your patience!

Tomorrow morning (Thursday, November 7), we’ll be performing some important database maintenance for about an hour, beginning at 7am PT.

During this period, a number of Second Life services will be impacted. Some users may be logged off and may be temporarily unable to log in for a brief period. The maintenance may also disrupt transactions, logins, and account registration. The land store and land auctions may also become unavailable during this time.

We recommend that users refrain from rezzing or transferring valuable (no-copy) objects or making any L$ or Marketplace transactions during this maintenance window.

We will update this post when the maintenance has been completed, and you can follow along at Grid Status for more detailed updates as well.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you all for your patience as we work to improve Second Life for everyone.

Linden Lab

You may have heard that in addition to continued work to improve Second Life, Linden Lab is developing a new platform for user-created virtual experiences, code-named Project Sansar. (If you’d like to learn more about it, check out some of the recent press in our media archive.)

Project Sansar is not a sequel to nor a replacement for Second Life, and that the two will run in parallel. Although different from Second Life in a number of respects, Project Sansar has understandably aroused the interest and curiosity of many Second Life Residents. We’re very grateful for that enthusiasm! While it’s still very early for Project Sansar, today we have a special message to share inworld -  exclusively with Second Life Residents.

Visit in Second Life
Linden Lab

As we recently announced, we’re making multi-million dollar investments in Second Life that will benefit Residents in the near and long term, while also ensuring that the virtual world’s bright future ahead is even more awesome than its 14+ year history has been. Exciting times!

Today, we want to update the Resident community on some of the initiatives funded by those investments, and also announce two fee changes that will enable us to invest in even more Second Life improvements in the future.

Updates to LindeX and Credit Processing Fees

Second Life’s vibrant Linden Dollar economy and the ability to process credits has a very real impact on the lives of many around the world. Residents have built extremely successful businesses in Second Life, charitable organizations have raised millions of dollars for important causes, and a great many creators earn enough L$’s to fund their hobbies and shopping habits.

Underlying SL’s user-to-user economy and the ability to buy and sell L$’s for real currency is a significant amount of ongoing work to ensure that everything remains compliant with applicable laws and regulations, while also preventing fraud and money laundering. This work comes at a cost, and we are adjusting related fees in order to help cover those costs and enable us to continue to invest in Second Life’s future. The changes are as follows:

  • Effective today, the fee for buying L$ on the LindeX will be $0.99 per transaction (previously it had been $0.60 per transaction). These changes impact only buys on the LindeX, and the fees associated with buying L$'s during SL Marketplace transactions remain unchanged.
  • On January 3, 2018, the fee for processing credit transactions (i.e. paying real money into a PayPal or Skrill account) will be 2.5% per transaction, with a $3 (USD) minimum, and no maximum. This fee is currently 1.5% per transaction, with a $3 (USD) minimum and a $25 (USD) maximum.

New & Upcoming Improvements to Second Life

We’re investing across a number of areas for SL, including new features, engineering support, customer support, billing systems and upgrades, and customer acquisition outreach. Some of these will be long-term initiatives, but here are a few updates on some of the improvements you can enjoy right now (or very soon!):

More fun, for everyone in SL. We introduced SL’s first grid-wide game Tyrah & the Curse of the Magical Glytches, giving all Residents a new experience to enjoy throughout SL. The game is designed to encourage a grid-wide level of participation and exploration, and already it’s been played by nearly 5,000 Residents. Very soon, we will enable Resident-owned locations to host portions of the game, and we will announce those details when ready.

New creative tools. We recently released Animesh in beta, enabling creators to use skeletal animations with non-avatar objects - like wild animals, pets, vehicles, and scenery objects. Coming soon is EEP!  (Environmental Enhancements Project), a series of extensions to Windlight that enable you to trade or sell your own environment settings. EEP will also allow Parcel-based environment settings and an extended day cycle too!

More value for Premiums subscribers. In the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out a new perk for Premium subscribers (hint: it’s a feature that’ll be helpful for merchants and shoppers...).

More customers for your businesses. We’re making changes to help get new users active in the SL economy more quickly and easily. The sooner a new user has L$ in her wallet and understands how to use them, the sooner she can become a customer for every business owner in SL, and so we’re working to streamline user flows and update tutorials to make that happen.

New ways to stop the bad guys. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for successful platforms to attract cheaters and bad actors. Some of these villains attempt to hurt Residents’ businesses by bypassing creator protections in SL, and we’re continually developing new tools and techniques to combat this. Recently, we closed an exploit that fraudulent gacha re-sellers had used. Our governance team can now catch them when they attempt the cheating method that we have already fixed. Many bad actors have already been banned from SL, and additional changes will soon make our team even more effective. Protecting your creations and your SL businesses is important to us!

We continue to make progress in the massive upgrade to SL infrastructure and move to the cloud (we call this project Brave New World). This move will (among many other things), help make SL more performant for Residents around the world, and may also enable us to introduce new products and more flexible pricing in the future.

We continue on our mission of only sending email to verified addresses (more here). Missing IMs lately? To never miss an offline IM again, log in to your account on the web, click on “Account,” then “Change Email Settings,” and then simply click “Verify” next to your current address.

Much more to come!

Of course, we’re working on improvements to the SL Viewer, Simulator (servers), and Web properties all the time, and there’s more than we can fit into a single blog post.  As we forge ahead you can keep up with the latest developments with the release notes we post to the forums:
