Linden Lab

Second Life brings creative, intelligent, and just plain curious people together. It’s a place to experience the extraordinary -- live concerts, art exhibits, fashion shows, social gaming, all sorts of other events. Each week, the Destination Guide editorial team reviews dozens of new locations and events worth exploring - as recently blogged, we added about 1,200 new entries last year alone, bringing the total to more than 2,400 listings in the Destination Guide.

With all that great stuff to check out, we thought we’d use this blog to highlight a few of the recent entries that stood out to the editorial team. They could have an interesting concept, a hilarious idea, a surprising level of polish, anything really. So in no particular order, here are a few of the recently added destinations we’d recommend checking out if you haven’t already:

It also features ballroom dancing Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, and is open Wednesday through Saturday from 6 to 8 pm. See you there!

Dryland

A giant dry lake bed, a parched and barren place where hulks of rusted ships rest on dried, cracked mud. A once desert island with decayed warehouses now holds art galleries, while the surrounding landscape hosts gypsies, carnies and tradespeople. This is Dryland, the new sim design by Anita Witt.

If you have a destination you’d like to share, head on over to the submission page and show us!

Linden Lab

It’s coming around to that time when we at the Destination Guide show off some interesting and generally awesome destinations new to Second Life. Much like last time, we wanted to introduce you to a few of the newer locations that caught our attention. So let’s get to it, huh?

This week, prepare for an invasion of art. Journey to an entire ecosystem of rusting, clanking machines, or take a look at a land of nine unique zones of thought. How about a perspective-bending island, or a wildly alien interactive music venue? But if all this sounds a little too far fetched, fear not, for we’re also bringing you a live boxing venue and a tango studio in the middle of a wheat field. As always, we love seeing all your new places, so join in the fun and share your own.

Rust

Rust is a world with a strange mix of machines, chained trees, rusty mushrooms, birds, balloons, butterflies, spiders, elephants and gear flowers. Watch as they corrode, flake and sway in the gentle breeze...

Virtually Real

The most exciting experiences in virtual reality are not so much the ones that totally alter the viewer's perspective of what's real as the ones that are able to expand, augment and enlarge the real. It is in its relationship with the real, rather than attempting to substitute itself for the real, that the most original use of virtual reality is found. This is Virtually Real.

It’s officially winter. All across the grid, people frolick through snow, snuggle around fires and prepare for this most wonderful time of year. We at the Destination Guide would be remiss if we didn’t share a few of the awesome places we enjoy wandering through. It’s a tradition, really.

Just like the song, few things are as joyous as dashing through snowy landscapes in a one-horse open sleigh. Speaking of classics, it just wouldn’t be the same without a loving recreation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, or last-minute shopping on a snowy boulevard. We also have a magically enchanting forest and a floating realm molded from crisp winter light. And for those of you who like a little excitement with your holidays, ever wonder what a battle between Halloween and Christmas would look like? Of course you do.

As magical as this time of year is, none of it would be possible without you. So join us and create something magical. Most of all, happy holidays!

This June, Second Life will celebrate its 10th birthday, thanks to users like you!

We have some fun things planned to celebrate the occasion (keep an eye on this blog for more on that soon!), but we'd also like to highlight your events. Like last year, we'll have a special category in the Destination Guide for Second Life birthday-related events. No one throws a better party than the Second Life community, and if you're planning an event to celebrate Second Life's 10th birthday, we want to know about it!

Submit your event or party information to the Second Life Destination Guide Submission Form (use the misc category) or via editor@lindenlab.com, using “SL10B” in subject line on the form or email.

In addition, there will be an organized community celebration happening that is sure to be great, and they are currently taking applications for volunteers, performers, and exhibits here.

Are you ready to celebrate?

As we explore ways to make the Second Life experience faster, easier, and more fun, we are testing a number of approaches to bring new users closer to the richness of our virtual world. Yesterday, we quietly launched a beta test of a new technology that opens up Second Life to new users like never before: Second Life on the Web! The SL Web Viewer allows new users to become Second Life “guests” through the Web and enjoy basic SL functionality while exploring exciting destinations in Second Life -- all without downloading a Viewer.

We need your help to test the SL Web Viewer!

Just click http://interest.secondlife.com/beta to check it out. There is a 45-second video that will run while the system loads and then you’ll either be offered an “Explore Now” button -- which means that you have successfully qualified -- or a “Join Now” button -- which means that you do not qualify for the test at this time*.  If you qualify, you’ll be asked to share your email address to create a temporary guest account to use the SL Web Viewer.

We’ll be running tests like this from time to time, and we may ultimately choose to further pursue some or none of these approaches, depending on what we learn from our testing, but we’re very excited to make SL an easier experience for guests and look forward to hearing what you think.

*Note: We’re in the early stages of testing this technology, and not everyone who navigates to the link will be able to access the SL Web Viewer.

As we continue to improve Second Life, we’re looking into the issue of inventory loss. If you have experienced some form of inventory loss in the past 12 months - whether partial (such as a single object or subfolder), or full - please take a moment to share your answers via this quick survey.

Your answers will help provide our engineering team with information that will assist them as they make improvements to Second Life.

We greatly appreciate your time and want to thank you for responding to the survey.

Linden Lab

Next year, we'll be making some improvements to the Second Life Marketplace search functionality. To help focus those efforts, we'd like to get some feedback from Marketplace users (both buyers and merchants) about how Marketplace search is working for you today and, more importantly, what you’d like to see in the future.

Please take a few minutes to help us improve this feature for all Residents by completing this brief survey here.

The survey will be available for feedback through January 6, 2014, and your input is greatly appreciated!

It’s just about inworld meetup time, and since we’re in the habit of sharing some of our favorite spots from the Destination Guide, this weekend, we wanted to flip the script and find out from you what spot you think is one of the best to visit for our next inworld meetup.

Share your recommendations in this forum thread - links to Destination Guide entry or SLURLS are best - and we’ll pick one to have our next inworld meetup.

The next meetup is planned for Thursday, May 14th at 1 PM SLT, so get your recommendations in soon!

As always, if you have a region or location that you would like to show off - be sure to share it, and we always love to see pics of your adventures on the Official Second Life Flickr page.

Linden Lab

As Linden Lab’s new CEO, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you all - I’m Ebbe Altberg, aka Ebbe Linden in Second Life (although I’ve been advised by many of you to use an alt when cruising around). You can find my official bio on LindenLab.com, and there’s a nice piece with a bit more about my background and experience over on Inara Pey’s blog, Living in a Modem World (I offered a few clarifications in this comment there).

Why did I choose to take this on? I did it because I love the idea behind our products, what you can do with them, and the potential for what we can become. I studied fine arts and computer science, and I find creating digital products and services a creative blend that I absolutely love. For me then, the creative and empowering technologies and marketplaces Linden Lab are creating are just incredible materials to work with. I have a huge belief that we can do great things together. Great for you, for Linden Lab, and for our investors. Linden has learned a ton that few companies have ever had the opportunity to learn when it comes to empowering people to contribute in creative ways and collaborate with a global online community. It’s unique.

I don’t really consider myself a ‘gamer,’ but I also don’t think that ‘game’ would describe Second Life either, and I’ve found Second Life intriguing for a long time. In addition to having personally explored the virtual world a bit back when it first started (of course I’m diving in more now), my son was a very active Resident as a teenager, and I’ve been consistently impressed by the incredible things the Second Life community creates. I’m proud to be joining the team that enables this level of creativity, and as I said in our press release, I’m committed to supporting our customers to help you become even more successful.

Many of you have been very kind in welcoming me via Twitter (I’m @ebbealtberg there), and I’ve read quite a few thoughtful blog posts and forum threads offering advice and raising some issues to my attention - thank you for that! I’ll continue to read all that I can (although I won’t always be able to respond to everything), and I’m looking forward to getting more familiar with Second Life and its communities through both personal experience inworld and communication with you and my colleagues.

There are big opportunities ahead as we further improve and grow Second Life, and I’m looking forward to our future together.

See you inworld!

Ebbe Linden

Bagman Linden

I recently joined Linden Lab as the new VP of Engineering to lead the Linden engineering team and improve the Second Life experience for both new and existing Residents. Second Life is not only the most unique product that I have ever seen, but it also has the most unique and challenging technical hurdles.

When the opportunity came up for me to join the Linden team, the two aspects that excited me most were: 1) knowing that, with my experience, I could improve the product in significant ways, and 2) a belief that Second Life is not at the end of its life cycle, but rather has its best years ahead of it.

For me, the challenges and the opportunities at the Lab are a perfect fit for my background. I come to the Lab with over 20 years of experience as a game developer and engineering lead, primarily in the MMO area. Prior to joining Linden Lab, I spent 10 years working for Sony Online Entertainment doing MMO RPG development (with a focus on the networking, servers, and core technologies), along with PS3 and PSP development. Some of the titles that I worked on include: Everquest, Everquest II, Star Wars Galaxies, Planetside, Untold Legends PS3, Field Commander PSP, FreeRealms, and CloneWars Adventures.

Old timers may remember an early entry into MMO gaming that I developed in a game called Subspace, published by Virgin Interactive Entertainment in 1996. The unique relationship I had with the player base of this product mirrors the relationship between the Lindens and the Residents in many ways. If there is one thing I've learned about MMO gaming over the years it is that MMO products have a life of their own, and the player investment in the product is a key aspect of that. Second Life is no different in this regard.  The Residents of Second Life want to see the product succeed every bit as much as Linden Lab does.

I describe myself primarily as a hard-core C++ developer, with a passion for well-architected, highly optimized systems. I like taking on the big challenges and enjoy refactoring systems to make substantial improvements, rather than just make smaller, incremental improvements.

And, for those that have already looked up the definition of Bagman, you can rest assured that my nickname doesn’t come from any criminal activity, but from a game that I played when I was a kid. In fact, here is a

link to the game in action (brings back good memories).

Excited to be on board and looking forward to an amazing 2011 and beyond.

Can you believe it? Second Life turns 15 this year!

To kick off our year-long birthday celebration, we’ve rounded up 15 exciting improvements and features that make Second Life better than ever in 2018 and beyond!

SL15B_logo.jpg

  1. Lower Mainland costs - Did you hear the news? We’ve reduced Mainland costs by over 10 percent. This change is part of our continued commitment to move toward a healthier economy, with more balance between costs and fees associated with land ownership, Premium subscriptions, commissions and transaction fees. For more information and context on this and other pricing changes, see the section “Updates to Mainland Costs & Other Pricing Changes” below.
  2. Double Mainland tier - We also recently announced that Premium members get DOUBLE the Mainland allotment! That’s twice as much space to build, create and design your own home, business or experience in Second Life at no extra charge!
  3. More Value for Premium Members - In the coming months, we’ll be announcing new features for Premium subscribers — including brand-new advantages that will add more value for Merchants, Creators and Landowners. There’s never been a better time to upgrade to Premium!
  4. Environment Enhancements (code name: EEP!) - Soon you’ll see a series of new customizations in the environment rendering system (also known as Windlight). Creators will have more control over the sky, water, lighting and atmosphere. You'll be able to adjust the number of real-world hours in the Second Life "day" to match that of a real world location; the cycle can be as short as the 4 hours it is now - or up to 7 real world days long. These changes will give more value, flexibility and marketability to land. Environment settings will also become tradable assets, so that they can be bought and sold in the Marketplace, creating another avenue for residents to profit from their creativity.
  5. More exclusive games and experiences - Last week, we unveiled “Linden Realms: The Wrath of Ruth” — a fiery update to a familiar classic that awards skilled players with unique prizes. There are more exclusive experiences on the way, including something special for our 15th anniversary celebration this summer.
  6. Themed Learning Islands - Getting connected to people who share your interests will be easier than ever with “Themed Learning Islands.” Soon newcomers may start their adventures in one of several themed areas, so their first experience in SL will be among Residents who share similar interests. This new initiative is in addition to our existing Community Gateway program which empowers independent communities to develop their own newcomer-friendly experiences.
  7. The return of Last Names - You’ve asked for it (a lot!), so we will provide a way to customize your last name in Second Life! More details will be available later this year.
  8. Gridwide Experiences - Currently, Creators can use the increased scripting capabilities of an Experience only in a region or parcel whose owner has explicitly enabled their Experience. One of the new Premium abilities will be an Experience that is enabled anywhere on the grid unless the landowner has blocked it.
  9. Auctions - We are updating our system for conducting Land Auctions. The new auction system will be integrated with Place Pages, providing much richer possibilities for describing the land for sale. Most importantly, Residents will be able to create an Auction to sell their land.
  10. Linden Homes improvements - We're bringing newer and better Linden Home designs this year.
  11. Marketplace updates - We've got a number of improvements to Marketplace in the works, too! We’re integrating many long-requested features that will help to reduce clutter and improve the functionality of listings as the Marketplace gets a facelift later this year.
  12. Improved performance -  We're working on a number of improvements to performance, from faster rendering in the viewer to reduce client lag, to changes in the simulator designed to allow more objects, scripts, and avatars.
  13. Animesh - Last year, we introduced Animesh in beta available to all Creator participants. This year, with diligent and invaluable input from the community, we plan to roll out this exciting new feature for everyone!
  14. Bakes on Mesh - Extends the Viewer and the Avatar Baking Service to allow wearable textures (such as skins, clothing and tattoos) to be applied directly onto mesh body parts as they are on system avatars. To do this, you'll 'wear' the textures as you would for the system avatar, and then edit the mesh body part to indicate the body part that should be used on each of the mesh faces; the corresponding system body part is then automatically hidden for you. This project also increases the supported resolution of wearable textures by 4 times (from 512 pixels square to 1024 pixels square).
  15. Migration to the Cloud - Finally, a huge effort is underway to move our Second Life infrastructure to the cloud. This update aims to enhance the quality and performance of Second Life for all Residents, but it will be of particular value for those who are far across the world from us. We look forward to exploring new products and more flexible pricing possibilities once this migration is complete.

UPDATES TO MAINLAND COSTS & OTHER PRICING CHANGES

Last year, we shared with you our plans for millions of dollars of new investments into Second Life and its communities to make our virtual world better than ever. Our recent investments are already paying off with numerous improvements including the introduction of a new 64-bit Viewer, Place Pages and a refresh of our starter avatars. We’ve also added more value to Premium subscriptions and a unique grid-wide hunt. We’re also continuing to hire new software and web engineers.

We’ve got big plans for this year, as you can glean from above, and we’re continuing to invest even more to ensure that the Second Life economy and community will be around for another 15 years and beyond.  A significant part of this effort is continuously re-evaluating the health of our business and the Second Life economy.

Currently, Land costs can be quite high, and make up a lopsided portion of our Second Life revenues. To improve this imbalance, we plan to increase revenues in other ways so that we can lower land costs further. In order to avoid shocks to the in-world economy and to take care that we keep the business healthy, we plan to make these changes in a measured way, taking time to assess the impacts of each change as we go.

Last week, we announced that we have lowered the cost of Mainland by over 10 percent and doubled the Mainland tier allocation for Premium members. In the coming months some other fees may increase, including Marketplace commissions, Linden Dollar exchange fees, and cashout fees. In addition, we will soon announce new tiered Premium membership offerings that allow Residents to choose the membership level that provides the benefits most important to them.

We are committed to keeping Second Life a vibrant and growing community with a healthy economy well into the future. Stay tuned - this 15th year will see some of the biggest improvements to Second Life in many years so that you can continue to enjoy it for the next 15 years.

Best,

Ebbe Linden, CEO,  and the Second Life Team

“For any immersive Resident, Premium membership is a must.”

Many of the benefits and perks of being a Premium member are especially useful for those looking to start or expand a Second Life business. Second Life Resident Blueberryxx, owner and creator of the incredibly popular fashion store Blueberry - gave us some insight into how Premium membership helps her continue to manage and run her virtual business.

SLBlog_PremiumBlueberry.jpg

LL: What do you do in Second Life?
BB: I own a fashion brand called Blueberry where I focus on creating mesh casual/chic women's apparel. It's my real life job and my most beloved hobby at the same time. It is an incredible experience to create content with the heavy influence, guidance and feedback directly from the customers.

LL: Why do you like Second Life?
BB: I am very passionate about Second Life, because it is the only platform in the entire world where a community constantly inspires each other to greatness. There is no going back once you have opened the doors to the kind of diversity, compassion and purpose Second Life has to offer.

LL: Why did you become a Premium Member?
BB:  I became a premium member the moment I knew I was going to be working full time as a content creator in Second Life. It is so crucial to me to have instant live-chat feature, not only for quick handle on account security issues if they have ever happened, but for regular billing hurdles that might come up as well.

LL: What do you like that the membership offers you?
BB: Honestly for any immersive resident, premium membership is a must. Group communication is essential part of the community and premium membership allows for a much, much bigger group space. Between events, land groups, friends groups, support/help groups, and store groups, this feature makes our lives so much easier. For a beginner content creator the weekly linden bonuses and premium sandboxes are going to be essential and a lot less costly in the grand scheme of things. The perks of having your land space and mainland building rights are the cherry on top.

LL: What advice would you give others starting out in SL?
BB: Take advantage of the freedom of expression Second Life has to offer and never be afraid to approach people. Second Life gets truly magical when you let yourself be involved and it's an amazing experience there after.

UPDATE: The limited-time opportunity for existing Premium members to lock in their current rates for one more billing cycle, including extending an existing monthly to use the current full year rate by upgrading now to annual is now available on the premium page. Simply renew before June 24th to extend your current Membership at the same low rate. For example, monthly members will be billed at the lower rate for one more monthly billing cycle, while annual members may renew (or monthly users may upgrade to annual) early to add one more year to your existing Membership at the current lower rate. If you have any trouble accessing the website, please note that it may be due to an increase in traffic and that the option will be available until the end of the day on June 24th.

On May 29, we made an announcement about future changes to Premium and Basic account features including plans to increase Group Memberships and offline IM limits for Premium account holders while reducing them for Basic accounts.

We’ve since heard strong and convincing feedback from many in our community about the impact of changing Group Membership limits for Basic accounts. For example, many Residents have shared how they rely heavily on Groups to stay informed about new product releases as Merchants use this feature to regularly communicate news and updates to their customers, and how much Groups are used for keeping communities active.

We hear your concerns and, as a result, Group Membership limits for Basic Residents will NOT be reduced as part of our Premium Membership changes rolling out on June 24. While Basic Members will continue to have an unchanged limit of 42 groups, all Premium Members will still see their limits increased from 60 to 70.

Here’s the revised summary of Premium feature changes:

PremiumFeatureChange2019.jpg

Our goal is to increase Group performance for everyone - whether you are Basic or Premium. As a result, we will be prioritizing some development resources to address Group performance.

We know change can sometimes be frustrating, so we appreciate your patience. Your feedback is helping to inform some of these revisions, so we’ll continue to listen closely.

Please see the original blog post for all pricing changes planned for June 24.  Land prices will decrease as announced on June 3, and existing Premium Members can lock in their current rates for one more billing cycle.* Simply pre-pay between June 3 and the end of the day on June 24 to extend your current Membership by one more cycle at the current low rate.

Thank you again for all of the feedback. We do not make these kinds of decisions lightly but are always open to the feedback, criticism, and ideas from our incredible community, and willing to listen and learn.

* We will update our blog when the availability to lock in your current rate goes live on Monday. If you have any trouble accessing the website on that day, please note that it may be due to an increase in traffic and that the option will be available until the end of the day on June 24th.

Rodvik Linden

Hello, everyone!

Firstly, thank you all for your kind words of welcome. It has been an unexpected delight to receive goodwill messages from so many Residents. I also appreciate the many thoughtful comments on BK Linden’s blog post announcing my appointment. I have read them and will be addressing some of your questions as soon as I’m a bit more settled in.

One of my highest priorities, over the last few weeks, was spending as much time as possible exploring inworld (with an alt and now Rodvik Linden) to better understand the product experience, your needs, and the culture of Second Life. I have discovered so much. I am amazed on a daily basis by what you have created. Over the holidays, I enjoyed many winter landscapes and seasonal activities. And, more recently, I have been playing around with vehicles and animals.

On the creation front, I am slowly learning how to build by playing around with the land tool and the building environment. I love trees and plants, so I probably overdid it a bit there

Trees.jpg

Next, I wanted to see how the scripting system worked. So, I made myself a “mail post” that emailed me. I was very impressed by how easy it was to get up and running.

Mail Post.jpg

Having no shelter on my island seemed a bit odd. So, I built myself a shack. It doesn't look like much, but it’s home.

shack.jpg

Finally, I like the water so I built myself a simple raft to cruise around in. (OK, it’s very simple. But it works!)

Raft.jpg

Getting immersed in Second Life is the fun part of the job and I can see why you love the world that you’ve created.

I’m in the process of getting up to speed and working with the team to finalize our plans for 2011. I hope to start sharing more in coming weeks.

Until then, thank you again for such a warm welcome and please follow me on Twitter @rodvik. I look forward to serving you--our customers--in the times ahead.

It’s creepy, and kooky and you don’t want to miss it!

This Friday, October 30th from 10:00am SLT until 3:00pm SLT - you are most cordially invited to join us inworld for the 2015 Second Life Creepy Crawl! “What is the Creepy Crawl?” you may ask. It’s a scary-good inworld event where Lindens and Residents get dressed up in their best Halloween costumes and roam from spooky spot to spooky spot for music, dancing, and celebrating! It’s going to be a bit like a ‘pub crawl’ without the need for taxi fare.

Costumes are strongly encouraged for this event - so come out and show off your best. I am still deciding between 4 different costume choices I've put together and may have to wear all 4 at some point during the crawl. It’s a good thing we’ll have 5 hours to run amok and have fantastical fun. Just keep in mind that this event is for General and Moderate audiences when perfecting your look.

Below is the schedule and Destination Guide entries - so if you’re unable to join us for the entire duration - pop into the spot on the schedule when you can log in.

The 2015 Second Life Creepy Crawl is getting closer - don't blink or it could be upon with you little to no warning!

See you there!

~Xiola
