In March, OnLive introduced SL Go - a service that brings the Second Life Viewer to mobile devices. The service had previously been available for Android devices, but today brings an exciting expansion: SL Go is now available for the iPad!

With SL Go, you can now access Second Life on your iPad using Wi-Fi or 4G LTE and enjoy a high-fidelity experience with great graphics quality, full shaders, shadows, and full motion capability. SL Go gives you access to the full Second Life Viewer interface, including edit menus, inventory, preference settings and chat management, adding intuitive touch controls.

To use SL Go on your iPad, you’ll need an OnLive account to launch the app, and then you’ll log into Second Life with the same credentials you’ve always used. To learn more about SL Go, including pricing and regional availability, and to get started with a free trial, visit https://games.onlive.com/landing/slgo

A few months ago, we released a Project Viewer that made it possible to use the first generation Oculus Rift development kit (DK1) anywhere in Second Life.

Since then, Oculus Rift has released a second generation development kit, DK2. The new hardware offers an even more immersive experience when used with Second Life - there’s less likelihood of feeling motion sick thanks to the motion-tracking features, and less of the “screen-door effect” on the visuals, thanks to higher resolution and brighter display.

We’ve integrated the DK2 with Second Life, and today are releasing a new Project Viewer so that virtual reality enthusiasts with the DK2 can use it anywhere in Second Life, just as DK1 users can.

Unfortunately, though, there are still some bugs impacting the experience, which we won’t be able to fix until we receive the next SDK from Oculus Rift. Because Second Life uses OpenGL in its browser, we cannot support direct mode in the Rift until Oculus releases a version of the SDK that supports that.

In addition, juddering is an issue (as it is with most DK2 demos). This can be significantly improved on Windows by turning off Aero, which allows the Rift to use its full refresh rate rather than being limited to the refresh rate of the primary monitor. This refresh rate is a major factor in the judder and turning off Aero can significantly improve your experience.

We’ll continue to fix bugs and improve the experience as quickly as we can once we get the next SDK, but in the meantime, we wanted to get this Project Viewer out into testers’ hands. If you have an Oculus Rift development kit, you can download the new Project Viewer here.

Here again is our video to help you get started using the Oculus Rift with Second Life.

On September 1, 2014, the updated Skill Gaming Policy for Second Life went into effect. As a reminder, this policy allows for skill gaming activity in Second Life, but establishes that only approved Creators may make skill games with L$ payouts, only approved Operators may run them, and they may only be run on designated Skill Gaming Regions, where access is restricted to those who meet certain qualifications.
As our FAQs explained, applicants to the program who submitted their applications prior to the September 1 deadline have been permitted to continue their skill gaming activity while their applications are reviewed.
Beginning November 1, 2014, the enforcement of our Policy will apply to all Residents, including those with pending Skill Gaming applications that await Linden Lab review and approval. As of that date, any objects or regions found in violation of our Policy will be taken down.We strongly encourage all applicants to submit any outstanding materials for our review as soon as possible so that their applications may be processed before the deadline.
From the start, we’ve seen strong interest from Residents seeking to become approved skill gaming Creators and Operators. You can find the current list of approved participants here, and we’ll continue to review applications as quickly as possible to expand that list. If you would like to apply to become an approved skill gaming Creator or Operator, you can do so here.

The virtual world can be an enjoyably odd place. While it might have the same trees, grass, and skies as the one outside, it differs in a surprising number of subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways. The grass could be neon purple, the sky filled with mythological creatures, and the trees might just have a gleeful disregard for the laws of physics. This week, the Second Life Destination Guide is proud to be your ticket to a taste of the delightful oddities that recently caught our eye.
Take the first steps through a forested island in a forgotten land before solving a dark and horrific mystery with a Japanese twist. Brave provincial ballrooms populated by beings from your darkest imagination, or traverse kaleidoscopic technicolor cliffs in a geometrically-reforming land that may even boggle Escher.

For more than thirteen years, Loz Hyde has been professionally building 3D models for commercials and movies such as Terminator: Salvation, 2012, and Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s also translated this experience into a successful brand in Second Life - Meshworx.
He states that “Creating a mood is really important” and part of his approach and philosophy to his work.
Among his many contributions is the now iconic "Arcade" building, which is inspired by the Brighton Pier in Loz's native England. The Arcade Gacha in Second Life serves as a beloved destination for many Residents during the regular Gacha events hosted there, as well as a place to become immersed in a turn-of-the-century pier experience.
While it takes some time and dedication to build the highly detailed pieces sold in his store, Loz has discovered a way to take his offline creative skills and make them both profitable and fulfilling in Second Life.
Loz says, “You can do pretty much anything you want to do, and that’s what is so empowering about it.”

We're saddened to share the news that former Linden Lab executive Joe Miller recently passed away. Joe was our VP of Platform and Technology Development from 2006 to 2010, and long-time Second Life Residents may fondly remember encountering his avatar, Joe Linden, as a friendly robot inworld.

Joe Miller (via LinkedIn) and his Second Life avatar, Joe Linden (via Gianna Borgnine’s Flickr)
Joe's work in his time at Linden Lab helped to dramatically improve Second Life and contributed to making the virtual world what it is today. Among his many contributions, Joe played a major role in the introduction of 3D voice to Second Life in 2007 - an incredibly powerful advancement that revolutionized how we can communicate inworld.
Those of us who had the good fortune to work with Joe during his time at Linden Lab remember his wonderful combination of fierce intelligence, tremendous warmth, and great caring for his fellow Lindens, for Second Life, and for its Residents.
We will miss him, and our thoughts and condolences are with Joe's family and friends in this time of great loss.

“Second Life is the perfect place for amputees to overcome emotional trauma by sharing stories and realizing they are not alone!” says Sandra L. Winkler, assistant professor at NOVA University in Florida, teaching occupational therapy.
Sandra and her Virtual Health Adventures project are the subject of the latest episode of
. She’s studying the use of Second Life both as a tool to help amputees and as a way for occupational therapy students (and anyone, really) to experience a body image with a prosthetic and empathize more closely with amputees. While the study is still in an early state, Sandra believes results show that virtual worlds offer a valuable platform to help facilitate a peer-network and offer emotional support to friends and families who are dealing with physical and emotional transitions.
This study is just one example of how Second Life and virtual worlds can create a mutually positive exchange between people who may otherwise be unable to meet.

Last month, we announced a change to our policy on skill games in Second Life. The new Skill Gaming Policy establishes that skill games offering Linden Dollar payouts will be allowed in Second Life, but each game, its creator, its operator, and the region on which it is operated must be approved by Linden Lab. You can read more about the details of the policy in the FAQs.
From the many applicants, we have since approved a number of Operators, Creators, and Skill Games, and the first Skill Gaming Regions will soon be appearing inworld (and in the Destination Guide). You can find the current list of approved participants, games, and regions on the wiki. We will continue to accept applications for Operators and Creators and will update the wiki as the list of approved participants and games grows. If you would like to apply, you can do so here.
Remember: if you are not an approved* Creator or Operator, you must cease the creation, distribution, and operation of skill games (as defined in the Skill Gaming Policy) by September 1, 2014. So if you haven’t already removed any unapproved skill games from your Marketplace shop, for example, or haven’t yet ceased operating them inworld, now is the time to do so. From that date forward, operating and/or creating skill games with L$ payouts, among other criteria as specified in the Skill Gaming Policy, without Linden Lab approval (and/or outside of Skill Gaming Regions) will be subject to enforcement measures.
If you live in a jurisdiction where skill gaming is permitted and you plan on playing these games in Skill Gaming Regions in Second Life, you should not need to do anything differently. However, adding payment information on file now is a good way to help ensure you’re able to play as soon as Skill Gaming Regions are live.
*As noted in the FAQ, creators and operators whose applications are under review at the deadline may continue to operate skill games while their applications are reviewed, provided that they have submitted all required documentation and continue to promptly respond to any inquiries from Linden Lab.

Linden Lab
This Wednesday evening, long-time Second Life resident and artist DC Spensley (aka DanCoyote Antonelli in SL) is presenting a free, mixed reality theater performance in San Francisco. If you’re in the area, come see the show in person - details from DanCoyote are below.

Avant Garden, a mixed reality performance presented by DC Spensley
Avant Garden is a mixed reality theater performance by Artistic Director and Virtual Worlds Producer DC Spensley. Mixed reality in this sense means a combination of live and virtual reality dance performers interacting by means of a rear projection screen. The virtual team is called the ZERO SkyDancers, an ensemble that has been performing professionally since 2006 at art biennials, festivals and commissions, log in from all over North America using their computers to rehearse and perform together in simulated space. Imagine people controlling puppets over the internet all together on a stage similar to a video game environment. The live dancer (physically present) Kathleen Moore (of Dance Generators) performs in front of the screen allowing her to interact with the virtual performers and stage set.
Avant Garden is a combination of avant garde and walled garden, and refers to the challenge presented in offering virtual reality theater to a physical audience. Avant Garden is an experiment in doing exactly that: sharing virtual theater with a live audience.
This show is only for the live audience in the physical theater, but for those unable to attend, it sounds like performances for inworld audiences are also planned for the future. As details become available, we’ll share them here!
