Linden Lab

Exactly 10 years ago today, award-winning media maker Draxtor Despres (a.k.a. Draxtor™) uploaded to YouTube one of his most-acclaimed pieces of virtual journalism:  “Virtual Guantánamo [in Second Life].” The video, which received mainstream media coverage and won an “Every Human Has Rights” Media Award, was conceived at the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) with a MacArthur Foundation grant in 2006.

This early machinima production documented the making of the Gone Gitmo project (“Virtual Guantánamo”), a 3D replica of the infamous Guantánamo Bay Detention Center in Second Life. Inworld visitors to this virtual prison experience were subjected to an “abduction” simulation that included a dark plane ride and being thrown in a cage. Until its closure in 2013, this inworld project was also used for multiple mixed reality panel discussions including events affiliated with Seaton Hall Law School and the ACLU.

Nonny and Peggy during interview.png

The project was a collaboration between VR pioneer Nonny de la Peña and former USC professor and artist Peggy Weil, both of whom created the project under the mentorship of former BAVC creative director Wendy Levy. Second Life was the ideal platform for the ambitious project, and it demonstrated how virtual worlds could be used as a storytelling medium for social justice issues.

This month, Draxtor revisits his original reporting and meets again with the people behind this pioneering piece in immersive journalism that served as the precursor to the popular ethnographic series on virtual lives “The Drax Files.”

Linden Lab

As we teased at the end of August, an all new grid-wide gaming experience has been in the works here at the Lab, and today we’re excited to announce that it’s opening! Tyrah and the Curse of the Magical Glytches is here for you to explore - read on for the details.

MAGELLAN IS DEAD!!! Dr Talpa has not been seen since his robot army was defeated and Tyrah escaped before he could turn her into a cyborg. The moles are in shock and mourning Magellan's passing. Who will protect the grid now that he is gone?? No one is sure…

Mischievous, magical creatures called Glytches are creating havoc upon the grid!

Where did the Glytches come from?  What does Tyrah have to do with it?  Curse?!  Learn all in this special background video!

It’s up to you, the Residents, to save the grid from these adorably rascally creatures.  As you catch them, you get to keep them!  Sometimes when you catch them, you are also given gems which you can use to upgrade your weapons, play a prize lottery, and even enter special bonus regions chock-full of more Glytches and gems.

To get started, go to the Portal Park and find the new portal to Tyrah and the Curse of the Magical Glytches.  Walk through that portal, watch the background story and tutorial videos if you haven’t already, pick up your starter kit from The Apothecary, and start hunting!

The Glytches are all over the grid, in places like PaleoQuest, Linden Realms, Horizons, various InfoHubs and other locations.  They’re even on parcels owned by Residents!  Don’t worry, they won’t be on your own personal parcel unless you want them there. There’s information about how to apply to host Glytches on your parcels in the Official TCMG Wiki page.

Getting Your Glych Collection Started

Remember that mysterious Egg you picked up during Second Life’s 14th birthday celebrations?  Bring it with you! It’s finally ready to hatch! To hatch your egg, pick it up (wear it, just don’t sit on it, because...ew!) and take it to Hartyshire.  Find the hatchery located inside the Gift Shop, and click on the hatchery.

You must be wearing your egg in order to hatch it.

Your Mission ...

Now that the threat of the Glytches is real, will you rise up as a hero and capture as many as you can? Can Tyrah count on your help? Head over to Portal Park and start your Glytch-collecting adventure now!

There’s something about September in Second Life. As summer comes to a close, the community is cranking up the creativity as several high-profile events and destinations debut. The Arcade quarterly fashion event is back and will surely getcha with great gachas from 100 of SL’s best designers and builders. Kultivate Magazine concludes its popular series of events this year with The Black & White Exhibition, which features over 40 artists showcasing their talents in black-and-white imagery. If you’re feeling festive, then there’s also the Fantasy Gay Pride event which features several impressive fantasy builds including a Baroque theater, steampunk area and a Medieval castle.

There are also some fantastic photogenic spots for snapshots and exploring, including Fairy Tale from the ever-prolific Cica Ghost and Night Gazing (which celebrates the beauty of dreaming).

Linden Lab
Dear Second Life Residents,
It’s been an exciting summer at Linden Lab. Second Life celebrated its 14th anniversary, and shortly thereafter we also opened Sansar’s creator beta to the world. In addition, we are thrilled to announce a set of investments into Second Life and its communities that will include enhancements to our engineering support, customer support, billing systems and upgrades, and customer acquisition outreach. In all, we’ve budgeted many millions (USD, not L$...) in the coming year to make SL even better, and we’ll keep everyone up to date on improvements as they roll out (or sooner).
This summer’s milestones have given us all another opportunity to reflect on just how strong the Second Life community is, what an incredible history SL has had so far, and what an amazing future lies ahead for the virtual world and its Residents.
For more than 14 years, you’ve created memorable experiences, diverse communities, close relationships, thriving economies, engaging art, exciting events, and amazing creations of all kinds. You’ve made the world, and we’re proud to provide the platform and tools that help you to do so. We at Linden continue to be impressed by what we witness from Residents every day, and we want you to know that we share that commitment to and love for Second Life.
Here are a few of the things you can look forward to soon:
We are hard at work upgrading all of the SL infrastructure and moving it to the cloud, which will bring a wealth of opportunities to Residents near and far, and allow us, among many other things, to make SL more performant for Residents across the world from us. It may also allow us to introduce new products with more flexible pricing.
We’re working on several features to increase the value of Premium subscriptions. Most recently we gave Premium members priority access to near-full events, and shortly, we’ll be ready to unveil another bit of exciting news for subscribers.
We're building out a series of great extensions to Windlight (code name: EEP!), which will give value, flexibility, and new marketability to land, and will make Windlight settings tradeable assets.
We have an extension to the animation system in the works (code name: Animesh) that will allow non-avatar objects to use more powerful and efficient skeletal animations the way avatars can today, and even more changes planned for creators and merchants later in the year.
We’ve also got new experiences and events coming. An exciting new grid-wide gaming experience is coming soon! The team can’t wait to share the details with you in just a few days. Also in the works for this fall is an updated Halloween Haunted Tour, with new spooktacular events to celebrate. Not to mention, we’re turning 15 next year - SL15B, baby! That’s an incredible milestone and we are looking forward to collaborating with you to produce an amazing celebration.
Long live Second Life and long live the creative process in the amazing worlds that you've trail-blazed! Thank you for filling SL with your creations and communities all of these past 14+ years, and here’s to many, many more together.

Oh, the horror! Everything is terrifically horrific in this week’s Destination Guide highlights. The 6th annual Lovecraft Festival is already underway and there’s a frightful new puzzle game from the acclaimed MadPea Productions that you won’t want to miss. Chic Aeon has crafted a steamy mystery game that challenges players to explore a creepy graveyard in search of a missing woman...or you can risk venturing further into the Unenchanted Forest.
If you manage to return alive from any of these horror-filled hot spots, then there are plenty of peaceful places that you can also explore in Second Life. We recommend one of the many new fashion events or music clubs that can help you dance away those demons.

It has been just a little over a week since we launched the inworld shopping event to commemorate SL14B. We’ve gathered 60 Merchants, each providing a free gift as well as discounts on many of their top items. Be sure to take some time to drop in and take advantage of the incredible deals at hand. The shopping event spans three contiguous Regions, making it easy to cam shop or easily walk through. A little retail therapy may be just the thing you  need.
We have plenty more in store for celebrating our 14th anniversary - and will share more details on that below, but first - if you are planning an event in celebration of SL14B, be sure to send the deets to our editors over at the Destination Guide. Our 3rd Annual Music Fest is coming, and so much cooler than Coachella - literally, you can blast the air conditioning or fans from the comfort of your computer! Details about lineup and location to come - but be sure to save the dates, get your tail feathers ready to shake, and find those ‘rock on’ bento gestures for the show!

Second Life Community Celebrations
I have worked with many communities in my time, and I can tell you that none are quite as creative and unique as the Second Life community. This community never disappoints when it comes to putting together a bevy of good times inworld during the anniversary week. Watch their site for updates on what is happening this year for the SL14B Community Celebrations!
As part of those events, they will be interviewing some Lindens at the Meet the Lindens series. Those talks will take place on June 19 - 22nd at 2 PM. More details to come!

Linden Lab
You may have heard that over the past few years, in addition to continually improving Second Life (Bento anyone?), Linden Lab has also had a team developing a brand new platform that runs separately from SL.
That platform is called Sansar, and it’s designed to enable people to easily create, share, and ultimately sell their own social VR experiences, which can be used on PCs as well as with head-mounted displays (HMDs) like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Though there are some conceptual similarities with SL, Sansar’s been built from the ground up with very different approaches in many areas, including scale, discovery, performance, design and ease of use, and the platform’s business model to name just a few. Sansar is very different from Second Life, and it’s not a sequel nor a replacement.
Over the past months, the Sansar team has run a limited “creator preview” program, and some of SL’s most talented creators have been among those invited to test the platform. They’ve created some amazing experiences - from immersive artworks to narrative experiences, educational spaces, games, fantasy words, sci-fi scenes, roleplaying environments, and much more. Today, Sansar’s creator beta opens to everyone, which means you can create your own experiences with Sansar, list virtual items for sale in the Store, and explore the creations others have published.
If that sounds interesting, you can sign up for free at Sansar.com right now. A few things to bear in mind:
You don’t have to have an HMD to use Sansar. You can create and explore in desktop mode - but the VR experience is highly recommended.
It’s free. Free to join, free to create your own experiences, free to explore.
It’s a beta. It’s a big step for the new platform, and it’s also just the beginning. Many Second Life Residents - especially those interested in VR - will love what they can do with Sansar today. But there are still many features and capabilities yet to be added. Just as SL has dramatically improved with new additions over time (remember the days before voice? before Windlight? before mesh?), there’s a lot the team is looking forward to quickly adding to Sansar.
Only you can use your SL name as your Sansar avatar ID. Sansar’s name system is different than SL’s. Everyone has a unique “avatar ID” (like a username) and an avatar name, which doesn’t need to be unique (like a display name). If you’re JohnDoe Resident in SL, no one else can use JohnDoe-Resident as their Sansar avatar ID. Stay tuned for info on how to claim your avatar ID; for now, if you try to use an SL name as a Sansar avatar ID you’ll get a ‘not available’ error.
Second Life Is Here to Stay!

We want to be very clear that the opening of Sansar’s beta does not at all change our love of and dedication to SL.
We are continuing to invest in Second Life, and the SL team (which is separate from the team developing Sansar) remains absolutely dedicated to Second Life and all of its Residents. We’re working hard on some new projects to make Second Life even better, and we won’t be stopping. As always, keep an eye on this blog for updates on exciting upcoming SL developments.

From time to time, we make changes to Second Life’s Terms of Service in order to improve the documents, update and/or clarify policies, and keep the Terms current. We’ve just published an update to the Terms, and the first time you login to SL on or after July 31, 2017, you’ll be asked to agree to these updated Terms.
Here’s what’s new in this update:
We’ve restructured the Terms of Service to contain terms and conditions that apply to all Linden Lab products, and we have separated out product-specific references (such as Linden Dollar and LindeX for SL) into product-specific policies. The new Second Life Terms and Conditions contains all the Second Life-specific references that were previously in the Terms of Service.
We have added references to our wholly-owned subsidiaries, Tilia Inc. and Tilia Branch UK Ltd., which will be handling payment services on our behalf under certain circumstances.
We made some minor text revisions to clarify that Linden Lab has discretion to undertake certain account actions.
We have updated the arbitration provision in accordance with applicable law.
As always, you should read all policies fully before agreeing to them. If on or after July 31, you have any difficulties reviewing and agreeing to the new Terms when you login, please create a support case so the team can help you out.

Hello Residents!
Whether it's the significance of one's appearance or persona to fellow residents or how they impact the performance for all users, avatars have always played an important role in Second Life. Because of this, we are constantly trying to improve the quality, overall selection or choices and how performant these Linden curated avatars are. Every iteration we hope to be better and more efficient.
Today we’re excited to announce a set of 8 new starter avatars which are themed Renaissance, Mystic Heroes and Angels & Demons. In this release, for the first time ever, we’re offering Bento avatars!
Yes you heard it right, all but the Mystic Heroes in this offering will be Bento-equipped. Some of the avatars are ride-alongs, which mean they include horses as a Bento attachment, while others boast animated wings!
These avatars are available through the viewer in the "Choose my avatar" section. You can also view or choose them from your inventory and customize each to your liking. We hope you enjoy trying them out as much as we did creating them!

On June 26, 2017, Linden Lab performed some upgrades on our billing system that resulted in an unanticipated issue. After we completed the maintenance to implement the intended upgrades, many attempted L$ purchases on the LindeX, in addition to Marketplace purchases, began failing to deliver L$ or items, respectively.
Thanks to Residents quickly contacting support and confirming our growing suspicions, we immediately disabled payment processing at 12:05PM PDT to prevent additional users from being impacted.
After some intensive troubleshooting that - despite our best efforts - took longer than we’d have liked, the base cause of these failed transactions was resolved as of 3:51PM PDT on the same day. However, we still have the task of refunding the thousands of failed transactions to the impacted users ahead of us. A large number of Lindens across several departments have been coming in early and staying late between Monday and today to fulfill that responsibility to our users. Your patience is greatly appreciated, and we hope to complete the work as quickly as possible.
We’ll post an update to this blog as soon as we have more information to pass along. Our support agents on the phone lines and live chat do not have any additional information to provide at this time. Support cases which have already been submitted will be answered once this situation has been resolved.
If you missed it, April recently shared a bit about the role of ‘Shrek Ears’ in the Linden culture here. You can believe that this week, Shrek ears are being worn.

To celebrate, we put together a special (and somewhat mysterious) gift set.

We’re not entirely sure what a Sananok is, but the Moles assure us they are friendly creatures that tend to keep to themselves and need a good home. Each Sananok avatar comes with a mysterious egg, which is  in fact so mysterious, not even the Moles know what it will hatch into.
Sananok Avatar

A wearable avatar that includes a shape and an alpha layer.

Mysterious Egg  (Rezzable or wearable)

Things you can do with the egg:
Rez it out your parcel, make it feel at home. Add it to your avatar to carry it around with you (perhaps for a night on the town?). Have a tea party with it, it’s all good. Keep an eye on your Egg as it will, from time to time, tell you things (like when it’s getting ready to hatch!).
Stop by the SL14B Birthday Regions and grab this gift from any of the gift kiosks available!
