Second Life hits its 14th Anniversary this summer. That’s worthy of celebration, and you do not have to wait until the actual Anniversary ( June 23rd, if you’re curious) to start enjoying the fun!

While we have a few things in the works for later this month, yesterday we launched a HUGE shopping event in honor of the occasion. Sixty Merchants with some of the most popular brands in Second Life have set up shop across three Regions  -  Golden, Gilded and Halcyon - each providing a FREE gift and some major discounts on their top-selling items!

You’re going to want to find some time to make your way through each of these stores, as there really are some amazing things to find.

Go, check it out now! Sales ends on June 26th!

Long-time Resident Arduenn Schwartzman has developed quite the reputation as a prominent inventor, scripter and builder in Second Life. With a career that includes stints as a both a molecular biologist and assistant professor outside Second Life, Arduenn is perhaps best known inworld as creator of the air combat game WarBug.

“Second Life rekindled the possibility to be creative,” says Schwarzman. “Over the years, I’ve always been fond of flight simulators. I thought it would be awesome just to have an air combat game. Second Life is perfect for that.”

Arduenn’s enterprises in Second Life extend well beyond aviation. Over the past 10 years, he has also created over 400 items that can be found for sale at OMGWTFL$10. In addition to his inworld store located near the WarBug Headquarters in Second Life, many of his items can also be found on the Second Life Marketplace. Among his crazier creations are a scripted and animated fly swatter, a gun that shoots nachos, a tin-foil hat, and nine pieces of sculpted bacon. Of course, there’s also the Fart HUD 2.0 that is advertised as the “perfect Valentine’s Day gift.”

To find out more about Arduenn and his many adventures in Second Life, watch the latest episode of “The Drax Files” below.

We are thrilled to re-introduce the Community Gateway Program!  Previously, the Community Gateway program helped bring new users to Second Life, by enabling Second Life communities to attract, register, an on-board new Residents. The program was shelved in 2010 as resources were reprioritized, and now we're excited to reintroduce the Community Gateway program along with some improvements that will make it even more valuable to Second Life.  We recognize the benefit of having Resident supported tutorial areas and have been working with several communities while fine tuning the new program over the last year.
This program allows Second Life Communities to:
Create a new user experience and attract Residents to your specific community
Assist those new Residents in beginning their journey into Second Life
Lend a guiding hand in the creation of their new avatar personas
Assist with increasing new user retention.
This powerful new tool will allow you to register new users right from your own community website and add them automatically to your group, thus helping your community to grow!
All details about this program (including how to apply) may be found here.

Place Pages are Linden-hosted web pages  for every Second Life location listed in Search, which landowners can customize and make their own. These pages make it easier to discover great places in SL and give Residents another way to promote their destinations.
We started a limited Beta program for this feature back in January 2017. This allowed us to respond with tweaks and polish to help get it to where it is today. This current offering is our “Unrestricted Access” release, which now allows all landowners to access their Place Pages and personalize them. Many of these pages will also soon be discoverable via popular search engines, such as Google. This means that more people than ever have the potential to learn about your Second Life place!
Moving forward, we’ll be continuing to improve Place Pages with more user-facing features, so stay tuned! For more information, visit the Place Pages Knowledge Base. A forum thread was also started for those wish to get even more history or would just like to leave us feedback.
Check out these example Place Pages:

We hope you enjoy this new feature and look forward to see even more places to discover and explore!

Second Life’s 14th Birthday is just around the corner, and - once again - we’re planning to help commemorate this milestone event along with our Residents! Please stay tuned to this blog and our social media pages for more details as they roll out.
Today, we’d like to kick things off by announcing sign ups for two exciting events that we are planning - the 3rd annual Second Life Music Fest, and an inworld shopping event to celebrate another fabulous year of Second Life!
Music Fest Showcase Sign Ups
For the last few years, we’ve enjoyed a weekend of live music in celebration of Second Life’s birthdays - and there is no better time for a music festival than summer! This year, once again we’re hoping to draw out all you music makers to come audition for the festival. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, electronic to acoustic - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!
To sign up for an audition, please complete the submission form no later than May 22nd, 2017. Sign ups will close at 12:01 AM (SLT) on May 23rd, 2017. While we encourage everyone to sign up, it is not a commitment on your part and does not guarantee a spot at the auditions. We will review all submissions and extend audition invitations via email and inworld to the designated contact. Each invited act will have a short audition time (5 minutes max) to play and leave an impression on a panel of judges made up of Lindens and Residents. This panel will select acts to be invited to perform at the Second Life Music Fest. Upon completion of a half hour slot at the festival, the designated contact for each act will be eligible for payment (subject to Linden’s terms and conditions).
All Second Life Residents are welcome to participate in the auditions as audience members. It’s an opportunity to see a variety of acts showcase the best they have to offer. For those who are interested, the auditions location will be shared in a future blog post. Showcase dates and times are as follows:
Showcase: Friday, June 2, 2017 12 PM - 2 PM (SLT)
Showcase: Saturday. June 3, 2017 from 6 PM - 8 PM (SLT)
Music Fest Day 1: June 23, 2017 from 11 AM – 3 PM (SLT)
Music Fest Day 2: June 24, 2017 from 8 PM - 12 AM (SLT)
Music Fest Day 3: June 25, 2017 from 4 PM - 8 PM (SLT)
Inworld Shopping Event Submission
In addition to Music Fest, we are also planning a festive inworld shopping event and are actively looking for Merchants who are willing to participate! We had a very successful Valentine’s Day shopping event, and are making this one even bigger - with plans for three Regions of participating stores offering gifts and discounts on items. If you think that this is something you’d like our brand to participate in, read on!
If you are a Merchant who is interested in being part of this event, please fill out this form no later than May 15th, 2017. The event itself will run from June 5th, through June 26th, 2017.
It’s great to be celebrating 14 years of Second Life with our amazing community! We’re looking forward to doing so this year, as well as many more years to come!

Linden Lab
There are lots of things in Second Life that send email, but as many of you have discovered, that email doesn't always get to the intended recipient. There are a lot of reasons for email from SL not being as reliable as we'd all like, and the Lab is working on fixing as many of those as we can, but some of them need your help.
One of the most important reasons mail doesn't get through is that many Second Life accounts have bad email addresses - when something in Second Life sends to one of those bad addresses, it generates errors. The number of those errors causes many network providers and spam detectors to block even perfectly good email if it comes from Second Life. To fix that, we need to cut down on the bad addresses, so…  over the next few months we will be converting all the sources of email in Second Life to not even try to send to an address that has not been verified.
To check whether or not your address is verified, go to your Account -> Change Email page; look next to your current address there. You should see a green checkmark and tag: √ Verified. If you do, you're all set and none of our changes will affect you negatively.  If you don't, there will be a button you should use to send yourself a verification email; when you get the email, click on the link in the message to verify your address.  Changing your email address will automatically send a verification email.
If your address is verified, you should not have any problems with our changes to sending behavior - hopefully, you'll begin to see more reliable messages.

Educators and instructors have been utilizing Second Life for many years to teach subjects like Chemistry, and the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference - which just concluded its 10th annual conference inworld - brings educators together to discuss their research and findings in virtual learning. This episode of the Drax Files takes a closer look at the application of education in Second Life though some of the work being done by Istanbul University professors Tuncer Can and Irfan Simsek
From teaching English, to training future teachers how to evaluate digital tools for learning and education,  Can and Simsek use Second Life to teach hundreds of students every day.
With Second Life, “... you are creating some playful, engaging, and colourful environments” says Professor Can. Within these environments, students can safely and comfortably express themselves through their avatars. The comfort can help with openness and a focus on learning.  The virtual world also helps prepare onboarding students who plan to physically attend Istanbul University and acquaint them with campus life, other students, as well as Turkish culture.
To find out more about the unique learning opportunities provided in Second Life education courses - including the use of machinima to recreate history in relatable contexts -  watch the full episode here.

Linden Lab
Currently, when a region is full, access to the region is simply on a first come first served basis. This leads to a sort of distributed race to enter the full region; users repeatedly try to teleport or cross into the region and fail until someone leaves.  The next attempt made by anyone  succeeds, which makes the region full again. Even the region owner and estate managers must compete with other Residents to get into their own region if they find themselves outside of the region when it is full.

We are introducing some improvements to how region limits and region entry work:
The Region Owner or an Estate Manager can always enter, even when the region is full

In effect, the region occupancy limit does not apply to the Region Owner or an Estate Manager for the purposes of entry. Having entered the region, the owner or manager does still increase the count in the region. For example, if there is a region that already has the maximum number of avatars in it, the Region Owner or an Estate Manager would be able to enter, but that would bring the number in the region to 1 over the limit, so 2 would need to leave before the next non owner/manager could enter.
The default limit on the number of avatars in each region type is increased
Full Regions by 10% (100 to 110) Homesteads by 25% (20 to 25) Open Spaces by 20% (10 to 12) This new bonus capacity is, however, available for entry purposes only to Premium users - for Basic users the occupancy limits remain the same. For example, when a Full Region with a limit of 110 users has 105 users in it, Basic members will be unable to enter - they will see the region as full - but 5 more Premium users will still be able to enter.
The current (owner controlled) limit on each region will automatically be reserved for Premium entry by the same bonus %: If the owner of a Full Region had reduced the default 100 avatar limit to 50, the same bonus percentage (+10%) is reserved for Premium entries, so 45 entries will be usable by Basic members, and 5 additional spaces will only be available to Premium members. Once an avatar is in a region, whether they are Premium or not will not matter; they count the same as anyone else. It doesn't matter what the mix of Premium, Basic, or owner/managers in the region is: they all just each count as one occupant.
We will be rolling these features out slowly to regions in and around you.
We’re excited to offer this new functionality, improving the experience of Land Owners and Premium Members in Second Life.  Login and keep your eyes open for another announcement once the rollout is complete!

As part of Linden Lab's continued risk management process, we are now introducing monthly Process Credit limits. We anticipate that few, if any, Residents will be negatively affected by these adjustments, and will persist in monitoring any impact these changes may cause.
You can review your existing limits on this page; your Process Credit limit will be listed there, as well as your Buy and Sell limits.

You can request a tier limit review through our support system. Simply submit a ticket --> Billing --> LindeX Billing and Trading Limits Review Request (for basic accounts) or  Billing and L$ -> LindeX Tier Review ticket options (for premium accounts).

In recent server deploys, we rolled out valuable updates to land access in Second Life. These improvements made a change to allow estate owners and managers to always enter the regions that they administer, increased the population limits on regions, and granted premium members priority access to popular events.
But wait, there’s more …
Now, we are happy to announce another improved capability for estate managers. Estate managers may now enforce parcel access settings across their entire estate. They can choose to allow parcel owners to prohibit public access (creating a banline), or require that parcel owners permit public access so that most Residents experience the estate as a contiguous area.
As an estate owner, if you want a welcome area that is accessible to all, you’ll no longer need to manually check your parcels for banlines on your estate! Just set it and forget it. You will be informed that this change may impact any existing parcel settings, and you can rollback to previous individual parcel settings. We’ll keep the previous parcel settings - for a limited amount of time - in the simstate to temporarily safeguard against accidental changes.
We’ve adjusted the access management UI to try to make the effect of each change more clear, and have additional UI improvements in the works!
You can read a great (and highly detailed) recap of these changes on Inara Pey’s Blog. Thanks, Inara!
Keep a light lit... we have more exciting land enhancements coming on the wind in the future.

When I was a teenager, my parents and friend’s parents would buy us season passes for the local amusement park to keep us busy during the summers. We’d get dropped off in the morning, run wild on the rides, and wait for our parents to pick us up as the sun set behind the skyline of roller coasters tracks and ferris wheel spokes. Summer always brings back those memories of good times with good friends — some of whom I am still close to all these years later. There is something magical about an amusement park, and you can enjoy all that excitement without the vertigo in Second Life.
The Destination Guide  is crowded with fun, interactive spots full of rides for virtual thrill seekers and summer lovers alike. Take a look, and you are sure to find something that brings back memories of the summers of your youth — regardless if that’s decades or last summer.
Share your Second Life summer pics to our Official Second Life Flickr —  where we select our Pic of the Day features.

Remember the first time you teleported into a space in Second Life that put you in total awe? For me, it was Transylvania, long before I was a Linden. My friend, who had introduced me to Second Life, invited me to his little home — after wandering like a newb nomad for days, it was one of the first times I’d met up with him inworld. I will never forget how enthusiastically he showed me his little coffin bed and walked me around the streets where people were openly role-playing and dressed to the pre-mesh nines in their gothic finest. The whole concept was overwhelming and extraordinary. My mind sparked with possibility and excitement. Shortly after our tour, my friend showed me a club, and for the next 11 years and counting, I’ve been amazed regularly by the places that pop up on the GRID.
Our Destination Guide is ripe with some of the best places to make new memories and experience new things — and you may find another chapter to your adventure on the other end of that next teleport.

Furillen City is distinctly Gothamesque. Visit the Monarch Theatre, a monumental City Hall, newspaper offices, a seedy bar, a huge sewer complex, a mansion, an asylum, a cave and much, much more. This is one of the most detailed city sims ever built in SL.

Linden Lab
For a limited time, the Second Life community can explore a new experimental version of Social Island, which is a revised welcome area that we hope both new and returning Residents will enjoy.
Based on your feedback, we’ve been harvesting a new crop of ideas to grow a new-and-improved experience. The Second Life development team has planted the seeds for several new experimental features that you’ll only find in this new Social Island preview. This area will continue to grow in the future, but you can get a "sneak peek" now! Highlights include a challenging maize, and a revised region design that we think will yield more organic and natural social interactions.
We do want to emphasize that this is just a kernel of what’s to come, and that some features are still under construction, but we hope that you’ll check it out!

Linden Lab
The VWBPE Conference is a community-driven event that focuses on education in immersive virtual worlds like Second Life. It’s organized by educators, for educators as an opportunity to showcase and share research and best practices in virtual learning environments.
The conference runs through April 1st, and a full schedule of events in available on the website.
Ebbe Altberg, CEO of Linden Lab, has participated in the VWBPE Conference since 2014, when he spoke at the Featured Keynote just a few weeks after joining Linden Lab. This year, Ebbe will be part of Above the Book: a Conversation about Education in Second Life with Kevin Feenan, founder of the Rockcliffe University Consortium. The discussion will take place on Wednesday the 29th of March, at 1 PM SLT. You can view a live stream during the talk via YouTube. Many of the discussions throughout the event will be recorded and made available on the VWBPE YouTube channel after April 5th, 2017.

It is clearly Spring outside the office windows here at Linden Lab. Blue skies, crisp air and sunny sidewalks, and everyone seems to have a bounce in their step that indicates the shedding of winter memories and the excitement of a new season upon us.
While it can be Spring eternal  in virtual life — there’s no doubt that Residents love to do it up in full festive glory. Egg hunts and pretty pastels are around every corner, and the sweaters and coats of last week are replaced with tank tops and cardigans.
Our Destination Guide knows just where the latest adventures await in Second Life. So swap out those boots for an open-toe shoe and hit the grid with a bounce like you mean it!
If your Second Life creation is missing from the Destination Guide, drop us a note at editor@lindenlab.com  or submit your spot via form.
Don’t forget to take loads of pics and share them on our official Second Life Flickr. We select “Pic of the Day” from that group.
Now — let’s jump down that rabbit hole and see what awaits!
