Back in April, we blogged to announce that Flickr and Twitter support had been added to SLShare - the feature that allows you to share posts and images from Second Life to other social networks, right from the Viewer. Previously, this update to SLShare was only available in a Project Viewer, but as of yesterday, it’s now available to everyone as part of the main Second Life Viewer.

Check out

for a reminder of what this feature will allow you to do, and give it a try today - maybe share some pics from your favorite SL11B celebrations

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even create your own photo filters; visit the wiki page on this for more information.

Once you’re comfortable with the new features - get creative! We can’t wait to see what you share.

Second Life can be a real jungle. There is so much to see, and lately you may have spotted some Raptors running wild and wondered where they came from. You can grab your own free copy of the SL12B commemorative avatar on the Marketplace.  We’re running a contest right now around this Raptor and you could win L$10,000 for taking it out on the grid. Find out more on the contest page. Part of the contest is to take your Raptor to interesting places in Second Life for snapshot, and where better to find some great spots than with the Second Life Destination Guide?

We have compiled a fresh list of a few of the newest spots that caught our eye this week. Go forth into the wilds of Second Life and have a good time!

As you may have noticed, we recently added some banner ads to SecondLife.com. Today, we’ve also added them to the Marketplace, and we’ll soon expand the program to other Second Life web properties as well. The placement of these ads is designed to be unobtrusive, as we don’t want them to interfere with your Second Life experience on the web, and we’re taking care to keep the content appropriate.

These ads are a great opportunity for advertisers to reach the large, global audience that visits the Second Life web properties every day, and we want to extend that opportunity to Second Life merchants as soon as we can. For Merchants, advertising on the Second Life web properties will be a new way to get their offerings in front of potential customers, while at the same time making the ads extremely relevant to every Second Life user who sees them.

We have some work to do before we can make the ads purchasable by Second Life business owners, and it’s too soon to say precisely when we’ll be able to, but we wanted to let you all in on this plan early on. We’ll blog again when we have more info to share, so keep an eye on this space!

Second Life’s 14th Birthday is just around the corner, and - once again - we’re planning to help commemorate this milestone event along with our Residents! Please stay tuned to this blog and our social media pages for more details as they roll out.

Today, we’d like to kick things off by announcing sign ups for two exciting events that we are planning - the 3rd annual Second Life Music Fest, and an inworld shopping event to celebrate another fabulous year of Second Life!

Music Fest Showcase Sign Ups

For the last few years, we’ve enjoyed a weekend of live music in celebration of Second Life’s birthdays - and there is no better time for a music festival than summer! This year, once again we’re hoping to draw out all you music makers to come audition for the festival. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, electronic to acoustic - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!

To sign up for an audition, please complete the submission form no later than May 22nd, 2017. Sign ups will close at 12:01 AM (SLT) on May 23rd, 2017. While we encourage everyone to sign up, it is not a commitment on your part and does not guarantee a spot at the auditions. We will review all submissions and extend audition invitations via email and inworld to the designated contact. Each invited act will have a short audition time (5 minutes max) to play and leave an impression on a panel of judges made up of Lindens and Residents. This panel will select acts to be invited to perform at the Second Life Music Fest. Upon completion of a half hour slot at the festival, the designated contact for each act will be eligible for payment (subject to Linden’s terms and conditions).

All Second Life Residents are welcome to participate in the auditions as audience members. It’s an opportunity to see a variety of acts showcase the best they have to offer. For those who are interested, the auditions location will be shared in a future blog post. Showcase dates and times are as follows:

  • Showcase: Friday, June 2, 2017 12 PM - 2 PM (SLT)

  • Showcase: Saturday. June 3, 2017 from 6 PM - 8 PM (SLT)

  • Music Fest Day 1: June 23, 2017 from 11 AM – 3 PM (SLT)

  • Music Fest Day 2: June 24, 2017 from 8 PM - 12 AM (SLT)

  • Music Fest Day 3: June 25, 2017 from 4 PM - 8 PM (SLT)

Inworld Shopping Event Submission

In addition to Music Fest, we are also planning a festive inworld shopping event and are actively looking for Merchants who are willing to participate! We had a very successful Valentine’s Day shopping event, and are making this one even bigger - with plans for three Regions of participating stores offering gifts and discounts on items. If you think that this is something you’d like our brand to participate in, read on!

If you are a Merchant who is interested in being part of this event, please fill out this form no later than May 15th, 2017. The event itself will run from June 5th, through June 26th, 2017.

It’s great to be celebrating 14 years of Second Life with our amazing community! We’re looking forward to doing so this year, as well as many more years to come!

In late 2013, we released a new way to share photos, status updates, and check-ins from Second Life to Facebook: SLShare. That project is now receiving an awesome update: SLShare will include Twitter and Flickr support!

This SLShare update will allow you to share your Second Life experiences beyond Facebook. Twitter and Flickr sharing is just as quick and easy, complete with specific options relevant to each social network.

For Flickr, you will be able to name and add a description to your image. We have tagging capabilities so you can ensure other users can find the images you want to share. Maturity settings are a requirement for Flickr, so we’ve made it easy for you to set this right from the Viewer.

The Twitter integration is also designed to be very intuitive, so it will be easy share what’s happening in Second Life with your Twitter followers. You’ll also be able to add photos and your location when you share to Twitter, and by default, SLShare tweets include the hashtag #secondlife, so it will be easy to see what others are sharing with this feature.

This update will also introduce a set of post-processing filters that you can run your pictures through to create cool one-of-a-kind images! The new filters were inspired by the images posted to Flickr by Second Life Residents. With more than a million uploads, most of them enhanced by some post-processing, we thought it would be great to include this feature right in SLShare. These filters will work regardless of which social network you choose to share your Second Life pictures to.

But it doesn’t stop there. For those more technically savvy, we designed this feature to be modifiable by our users. If you’d like to create your own filters, check out the wiki page on this for more information.

Check out

below, then go try out the new Project Viewer here. We can’t wait to see more of your SL experiences online so share today and share often!

Linden Lab

As we teased at the end of August, an all new grid-wide gaming experience has been in the works here at the Lab, and today we’re excited to announce that it’s opening! Tyrah and the Curse of the Magical Glytches is here for you to explore - read on for the details.

MAGELLAN IS DEAD!!! Dr Talpa has not been seen since his robot army was defeated and Tyrah escaped before he could turn her into a cyborg. The moles are in shock and mourning Magellan's passing. Who will protect the grid now that he is gone?? No one is sure…

Mischievous, magical creatures called Glytches are creating havoc upon the grid!

Where did the Glytches come from?  What does Tyrah have to do with it?  Curse?!  Learn all in this special background video!

It’s up to you, the Residents, to save the grid from these adorably rascally creatures.  As you catch them, you get to keep them!  Sometimes when you catch them, you are also given gems which you can use to upgrade your weapons, play a prize lottery, and even enter special bonus regions chock-full of more Glytches and gems.

To get started, go to the Portal Park and find the new portal to Tyrah and the Curse of the Magical Glytches.  Walk through that portal, watch the background story and tutorial videos if you haven’t already, pick up your starter kit from The Apothecary, and start hunting!

gathering_in_air1csm.png

The Glytches are all over the grid, in places like PaleoQuest, Linden Realms, Horizons, various InfoHubs and other locations.  They’re even on parcels owned by Residents!  Don’t worry, they won’t be on your own personal parcel unless you want them there. There’s information about how to apply to host Glytches on your parcels in the Official TCMG Wiki page.

Getting Your Glych Collection Started

egg.png.ce74cde85518f4a09813e0b3a7943ad5.png

Remember that mysterious Egg you picked up during Second Life’s 14th birthday celebrations?  Bring it with you! It’s finally ready to hatch! To hatch your egg, pick it up (wear it, just don’t sit on it, because...ew!) and take it to Hartyshire.  Find the hatchery located inside the Gift Shop, and click on the hatchery.

You must be wearing your egg in order to hatch it.

Your Mission ...

Now that the threat of the Glytches is real, will you rise up as a hero and capture as many as you can? Can Tyrah count on your help? Head over to Portal Park and start your Glytch-collecting adventure now!

UPDATE: the maintenance has been completed and all should be back to normal. Thank you again for your patience!

Tomorrow morning (Thursday, November 7), we’ll be performing some important database maintenance for about an hour, beginning at 7am PT.

During this period, a number of Second Life services will be impacted. Some users may be logged off and may be temporarily unable to log in for a brief period. The maintenance may also disrupt transactions, logins, and account registration. The land store and land auctions may also become unavailable during this time.

We recommend that users refrain from rezzing or transferring valuable (no-copy) objects or making any L$ or Marketplace transactions during this maintenance window.

We will update this post when the maintenance has been completed, and you can follow along at Grid Status for more detailed updates as well.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you all for your patience as we work to improve Second Life for everyone.

Experience Keys are a powerful feature that allows creators to build more seamless and immersive experiences in Second Life. Without this feature, you need to grant individual permissions to every single scripted object included in an inworld experience, and that can mean a lot of dialog boxes interrupting the fun! Experience Keys make it possible for creators to build experiences that ask your permission just once. In other words, you can opt-in to the entire experience, rather than having to grant individual permissions to every single scripted object included in it.

uO2Ean6Vzxk

This powerful feature is currently available as a beta only to a limited number of creators, and there are already a handful of experiences leveraging this feature that you can now explore.

Today, a new Viewer Release Candidate makes it easy for you to manage all your experience permissions in one place. This new Viewer makes it easy to Block, Unblock, or Reset experiences. Additionally, an Events Tab logs the objects and scripts you encounter in an experience, so every action performed on your avatar will be saved or recorded. Have a problem with an experience? We’ve also integrated a new reporting feature to make it easy to flag bad experiences to our Support team for review. Search is also available in the new Viewer, so you can explore all of the growing number of available experiences that use this feature. A complete feature summary can be found in this Knowledge Base article.

We’re looking forward to making Experience Keys broadly available to creators early in the new year, so keep an eye on this blog for more! In the meantime, grab the RC Viewer and start enjoying more seamless and immersive experiences in Second Life today!

While it may sound cliche that a fashion designer would hail from one of the world's most known fashion hubs, Maylee Oh isn’t influenced so much by Fashion Week as she is by her own day to day experiences and the personal expressions of the people and the city around her. “It’s all about creativity, no matter where we are!” she states. Earlier this year, we blogged about a British documentary company that was seeking stories from couples who had met in online communities, for a series to be called “Happily Ever Avatar.”

The production team has since filmed five couples who first met in Second Life and found happiness together other offline as well. The team notes that “this is a positive look at virtual relationships. We are determined to open people’s minds to the possibilities that virtual worlds offer.”

One story they have yet to capture is a couple that is just about to meet offline for the first time, and so they’re currently seeking a Second Life couple open to having their first offline meeting filmed for the series. Ideally, at least one person involved would be in the UK. The deadline for filming is October, so they’re hoping to find a couple planning to meet in August of September.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, you can find out more by contacting zoe.dobson[at]back2back.tv.

While some of us have yet to throw away those rotting pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns on the porch, others have already set out festive holiday trees and decor to mark the coming of winter and the cheer and celebrations to come.

Imagine each space in Second Life as a virtual snow globe -- capturing a perfect moment or scene to admire. The Destination Guide organizes those vignettes in a way that makes them easy for you to find the perfect match. Why not take a look at some of these recent additions to the Destination Guide?

Find some especially incredible looking spots on your adventures? Don’t forget to share pics to the official Second Life Flickr .

We’re always actively seeking new events and places to add to the guide, but If your piece of the grid isn’t there yet, please submit it for us to consider.

The Notifications Project Viewer is an improvement for sorting your notifications. This new feature is based on your feedback: a notifications floater with four tabs sorting your incoming notifications into System, Transactions, Invitations, and Groups and allowing better interaction with them as well.  Those who deal with high volumes of money transactions, group notices, group invites, or inventory transfers now have a better way to review their messages and identify which notices need immediate attention.

If you’re a merchant who pays close attention to your daily sales or someone who is active among your private groups, a better way to sort your incoming messages is now a reality.  We welcome your feedback and bug reports here.

“Second Life is the perfect place for amputees to overcome emotional trauma by sharing stories and realizing they are not alone!” says Sandra L. Winkler, assistant professor at NOVA University in Florida, teaching occupational therapy.

Sandra and her Virtual Health Adventures project are the subject of the latest episode of

. She’s studying the use of Second Life both as a tool to help amputees and as a way for occupational therapy students (and anyone, really) to experience a body image with a prosthetic and empathize more closely with amputees.

While the study is still in an early state, Sandra believes results show that virtual worlds offer a valuable platform to help facilitate a peer-network and offer emotional support to friends and families who are dealing with physical and emotional transitions.

This study is just one example of how Second Life and virtual worlds can create a mutually positive exchange between people who may otherwise be unable to meet.
