When there aren’t a lot of positive headlines, sometimes it’s hard to balance being an informed citizen and preserving your sanity. For those of you not familiar with one of the most epic TV friendships of recent herstory, Christina Yang and Meredith Grey had a tradition of doing an impromptu jig together when things got overwhelming.

During moments like this, I think we could all benefit by following their lead. Especially now that many of us are more sedentary than usual, it’s easy to forget that dance is such a natural mode of expression; distinct forms of dance have developed in almost all human cultures throughout history.

Second Life has an array of clubs and lounges, but when the virtual world is your oyster, you can dance wherever you want. Many animation overrides have a fun selection of dance moves to get you started, but don’t hesitate to peruse the Second Life Marketplace if you’d like a particular style. I’ve seen everything from ballet to reggaeton. Beginners, fear not, as some regions have dance balls that automatically put you in party mode when you stand on them. Our forums are also a great place to get the inside scoop from other Residents if you ever feel stuck when trying out something new. Feel free to take some inspiration from videos Residents have submitted to our Flickr.

An inworld dance party is a safe and relaxing way to have fun and just be in the moment. Everybody deserves to let go of their worries every once in a while, so dance it out!

This week’s Second Life Destinations video explores Voodoo Land, which shares a direct border with the cyberpunk region Little World. Created by long-term SL residents and designers Sofie Janic and Monkey Wonder, Voodoo Land also has an urban noir aesthetic, but with a hedonistic flair reminiscent of Las Vegas or New Orleans.

This virtual Sin City of sorts is an expansive region to explore in detail and take photographs; storefronts and buildings bear unique neon signs and there is an abundance of colorful street art ranging from abstract geometric patterns to murals. Turn the corner and you might see a digital billboard.

There is also a basketball court, arcade, and a skatepark for recreation. In fact, this week’s video features Los Angeles-based author Antoine Wilson, who rediscovered his passion for skateboarding in Second Life while sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here he explores Voodoo Land and brings out that old board to try some ollies. There is a lot of open space for skaters of all experience levels, so feel free to give it a shot.

There are also several shopping spots to choose from, including Voodoo Mainstore and Vegas Tattoo. If you need a place to rest, plop down next to an adorable pair of pugs in a rooftop pool. They really thought of everything.

Visit Voodoo Land today!

Does your avatar need a furry friend? From more traditional options like dogs and cats to farm animals and exotic creatures, there is a delightful array of pets available at the Second Life Marketplace. No need to worry about whether your landlord approves or if you have the space.

You can also pamper your pet with stylish collars, beds, and other accessories. Will your in-world buddy be a couch potato or a ball of energy? It’s up to you! They say pets take on their owners’ traits. Plus, just like people often ask to pet a dog they pass on the street, virtual pets can make great conversation starters. It might just be time for you to open the cat cafe of your dreams. Check out the Animals section of our Destination Guide for some awesome pet-spiration today.

It is officially summer and Jambo, an expertly crafted African landscape, is the perfect place for a virtual safari vacation.

The sounds of nature and occasional rhythmic hand drumming create an atmosphere that is both peaceful and chipper.

Cracked dirt paths connect different parts of this region, such as a small village and a savanna filled with wildlife. On one end, a regal lion surveys the land from a tall rock. No need to worry though, all the animals are friendly. Jambo is a prime place for nature photography, as explorers will see everything from zebras and giraffes to a flamboyance of flamingos along the shore. The diverse terrains of the massive African continent are colorfully brought to life as you go from desert to savanna to jungle.

Take in the sights by riding an elephant by yourself or with a friend! Visit Jambo! A voyage to Africa today.

If your trip gets you hooked on natural beauty, feel free to travel to more of our wilderness regions.

The latest “Second Life Destinations” video takes viewers on a trip to Paris in Second Life.

Designed by longtime SL resident Trouble Dethly Crystal, Vive La Paris was built as a special gift by the creator for his girlfriend in Argentina.
“Whether it is her favorite song posters adorning the walls of the music store, the outdoor gallery of some my favorite images by her, to the cheese and flower shop and everything in between, the region is my love letter to her,” says Dethly.
Highlights of the region featured in the video include the Eiffel Tower, shops, cafes, and an outdoor exhibit of Second Life photography.
“Initially, the region was only meant to be rented for two weeks like the other date experiences I have taken her on, where I would hire a couple of live singers for a private show...This time I even had a friend roleplay as a waitress so we could experience a full-service dinner. It was after this date that Ara and I decided to keep the region to share with others to explore, to use as a backdrop for their photographs, or even take their partner or friends for a full-service roleplay dinner.”
Vive La Paris is only one of several vacation destinations you can explore in Second Life. Take a look at this recent list of seven of our favorite virtual travel hot spots worth exploring from the comfort of home.
Vive La Paris
Each footstep tread softly upon its cobblestone streets, echoes in my thoughts of you. There is such beauty and depth found in the richness of its history and culture. Its withstood so much yet it endures, still breathtaking and strong. You remind me of Paris.

The latest “Second Life Destinations” video explores the new community event Pride Festival SL, which runs from June 24-28.

Dimitri Cloud (Juicy Mango in SL), who co-founded and manages the event with Eva Artemisia, organized the event as a way to bring the community together during the pandemic.
“We went through this pandemic worldwide, and we think that more than ever, Second Life is a safe hub, a safe place,” he says.
The theme for Pride Festival 2020 is “We are fire!”
Fire can be sublime and life-sustaining, a powerful energy that provides warmth and light. The colorful stages pop with energy against the desert backdrop, and so will your outfit! The organizers feel that it is so important to remind each other we are not alone during times like these, and we couldn't agree more.
The event will feature parties with live DJs and music, shopping, gifts, and more. Check out the official Facebook page for instructions on how to join the contests and raffles. There will also be a fashion show art gallery.
Not to be overlooked is the wide aisle leading to the center of the stage, which is emblazoned with the words "Black Lives Matter," perhaps inspired by the street mural in Washington DC.
This event will also feature workshops highlighting the needs for mental and physical wellbeing that marginalized communities don’t always have access to.
Please visit their website for more information and visit the event inworld. We hope to see you there!

Visit in Second Life On Wednesday, our Town Hall spotlight focuses on VP of SL Engineering Oz Linden. Oz will discuss a variety of topics about Second Life including a progress report on the migration to the cloud, the development of a new mobile companion application, and much more.
VP, Second Life Engineering
Prior to joining Second Life, Oz spent many years developing all sorts of networking code -- eventually including contributions to the development of HTTP and from there to open source SIP (voice over IP). Internet Telephony turned into something of a corporate nightmare, so he looked around for something more fun. A friend who was working at the Lab recruited Oz to help with the open-source program. Since he had already played a little with Second Life, he thought that it certainly met the "fun" criteria but he had no idea just how much fun. Nine years later, Oz is responsible for Second Life Engineering and having the time of his life. He is proud to be working on a product that means so much to so many people.

When it comes to Summer 2020, smooth sailing might not be the first phrase to come to mind. However, with Summer Sailstice coming up, we have a virtual event to help turn this ship around. Second Sailstice, the annual worldwide celebration of sailing, will take place in Second Life the week of June 13th-20th and just might be the largest virtual sailing event to date!

SL resident Dale Irata [David Bloch in RL] originally came up with the idea, and it has grown immensely due to the abundance of creative energy among SL residents as well as his belief that “There are no limits on us here.”
The real world Summer Sailstice always takes place on the Saturday closest to the Northern Hemisphere Summer Solstice, but there is also a weeklong Nautical Exposition with events and live performances.
Summer Sailstice in SL is an official Sailstice event and has been featured in their promotional channels to the RL sailing community. This is of particular importance this year, since many people do not have the ability to attend in person due to coronavirus restrictions. All experience levels of virtual sailors are encouraged to participate. For any newbies feeling shy or hesitant, the Second Sailstice Novice Regatta competition is even offering free boats.
This year’s event will also feature a “Sails and Tails” party, and the mer community will be making appearances in the water and around the boats. There will be races, cruises, boat shows, and parties.
Click here for more information on sailing in Second Life. If you’d like to practice stretching your avatar’s sea legs, take a peek at the Sailing & Boating regions in the Destination Guide.
Come check out the events and #raiseyoursail!
Summer Sailstice in Second Life
Summer Sailstice is the annual celebration of sailing that happens every year on the Saturday closest to the summer solstice; this is their 20th year! The idea is simply to get as many people around the world out on a sailboat on the same day. In 2020, because of the pandemic, it is safer to move to virtual sailing! Summer Sailstice in SL is officially registered as a Summer Sailstice Event. If you’re already a sailor in SL, visit this location to find out how you can register and join the inworld group to participate in this event on June 20th. While many localities are now in the process of carefully reopening certain businesses, many of us will likely be telecommuting for a few more months. Some companies are even giving their employees the option of permanently working from home if they prefer.
Whether you’re itching to get back into your routine or pleased about not having to deal with You-Know-Who leaving dirty dishes in the break room (every workplace has one!), we wanted to present a way to add a little flair to your video chats. With an abundance of gorgeous regions to choose from, why not set a screenshot from Second Life as your Zoom virtual background? The Destination Guide has a photo for each entry, and you of course have the option of snapping a picture inworld. Impromptu video call making you panic about that laundry pile? Place yourself in an immaculate virtual living room.
The category Photogenic Spots is a great place to start out, and the Art section has some immersive and surreal environments that are visually stunning. You could have a Mediterranean cliffside for your meeting at 2:00 and a disco dance floor for a hangout with friends at 5:00! With so many options, it’s impossible to choose just one.
Just don’t turn yourself into a potato!

As a follow up to Linden Lab’s statement in support of Black Lives Matter, this week’s “Second Life Destinations” video takes a closer look at some of the people, events and experiences bringing attention to Black lives in both the physical and virtual world.

Dondallia, founder of The Black Excellence Project Barb,  co-organizer of Stand for Justice Aemeth (a.k.a. Cake), co-blogger at Juicybomb Jack, co-organizer of Stand for Justice As mentioned on the Stand for Justice website, there are several events and projects currently underway that are worth a visit, including the We Will Be Heard - Black Lives Awareness Event (scheduled for July 4-11), the ongoing art build Walls of Freedom and the aforementioned Stand for Justice event and The Black Excellence Project. Walls of Freedom
Walls of Freedom is based on the book of the same name portraying the first three years of the Egyptian revolution that began on January 25, 2011, told through striking images of art that transformed Egypt's walls into a visual testimony of bravery and resistance. This is an ongoing build where fiction meets nonfiction or is it where nonfiction meets fiction? This platform is all about art, politics, and religion!

Celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back alongside the largest community of cancer-fighting avatars at the annual Relay For Life of Second Life, which opens today.
This prominent grassroots fundraiser takes place year-round in all kinds of locations, including our very own virtual world. The proceeds go towards helping people at any stage of cancer as well as prevention: screening, research, and even providing rides to chemotherapy. Almost $4 million USD has been raised in Second Life for the American Cancer Society across the many inworld fundraising events since they started in 2005.
There is a full day, night, and morning of activities scheduled, so get that coffee brewing! Unfortunately, just about everybody knows someone who has been affected by cancer, but in times of duress, the community can be a game-changer. Second Life has been defined by people open to connection, so come meet other residents who want to tell this disease to hit the road.
If you’re curious about past inworld RFL fundraisers, check out our wiki page, which also details how Dr. Gordy Klatt started this event about 35 years ago. You can also watch an interview with the organizers behind the Second Life event on our YouTube channel.
Better yet, teleport to American Cancer Society Island to join the event this weekend!

At this point you may have organized your whole house, binged an entire series, or had a moment where you forgot what day it was. It’s no easy feat staring at the same walls everyday, but we’re chugging along. It’s totally natural to feel a little squirrely and bummed out that our 2020 travel plans might not work out the way we had hoped. We curated a list of real life locations that have been replicated in Second Life so you can adapt to a virtual vacation. Overpack all you want, there are no extra baggage fees to worry about!
Machu Picchu: Get your steps in by climbing the labyrinthine Inca citadel in the mountains of Peru. Named one of the new 7 wonders of the world, the view from the top is incredible. You might even see a baby llama! Oahu Vacation Resort: One of the larger islands of Hawaii, Oahu is home to Honolulu, the state capital, numerous beautiful beaches, and Pearl Harbor. Fun shopping, scenic overlooks, and white sand await. Kowloon: Based on a portion of Kowloon Walled City, the intricately developed streets are lit by a characteristic neon glow. The concrete architecture and dark lighting give off a slight cyberpunk vibe.   The Grand Canyon: Grab your visor, it’s gonna be a scorcher. Explore this vast natural marvel carved by the Colorado River millions of years ago. There are also fun activities like horseback riding and games. Stay hydrated. Temasek: Temasek boasts beautiful recreations of the mangroves that serve a pivotal role in the local ecology. This region also has educational posts with fun facts about Singapore’s culture and history.   Eiffel Tower: Located in Paris, France, the Eiffel Tower has come to symbolize French culture and is the most visited paid monument in the world. The Avenue des Champs-Élysées is the perfect place for a romantic stroll. Guadalajara, Mexico: Enjoy the colorful atmosphere of one of Mexico’s most famous cities. It also has a region dedicated to the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta for an extra summery feel.

This week’s “Second Life Destinations” video explores the towering Skyscrapers immersive architectural project by Gem Preiz.

Once you arrive, you’ll have the option of taking a guided tour that allows you to take a magical flight through this futuristic megacity via tiny vehicles or simply flying around.
According to the notecard provided in the welcome area, the city was built at 1/10 scale and uses a combination of techniques to give visitors the illusion of a massive city despite the fact that it is built on a single region.
“About 11,000 prims, 500 constructions of more than 100 different designs, 6 transport lines of 20 km in total (at scale), 6 bridges; diversity and excess that evoke but do not equal that of the megacities of our time,” says Preiz in the welcome message that greets visitors. “I hope that you will take as much pleasure in visiting this city as I had to build it during the 6 months of its realization.”
If you enjoy this creation, you’ll want to also explore the many other ambitious projects by Preiz - just look for the teleports in the Skyscrapers region.
Skyscrapers is a magical flight through a futuristic megacity. As this city is built at 1/10 scale, you become invisible for the visit, and you are provided with an "Invisible Avatar" in the welcome hall. You transport down to the city and hop on the Guided Tour (in 10 languages). Skyscrapers provides the illusion of a city of 2.56 km side that you fly around in – or about 100 normal regions!

This year’s theme for our SL17B celebrations is “vacations and road trips” - and, in this spirit, we are pleased to debut today a five-part mini-series dedicated to the unique history, culture and communities surrounding one of the most popular modes of travel in our virtual world - railroads in Second Life.
Our virtual journalist Draxtor Despres recently took a ride on the rails of SL to travel across miles of virtual railroad tracks spanning across the grid. Along the way, he makes multiple stops to meet a wide variety of colorful characters and creative communities.

In episode one, Hrdtop75 Deluxe of the Virtual Railroad Consortium joins Drax for a look back at the origins and history of the Second Life Railroad (SLRR) system which originated in 2003 within the northwest part of the Sansara continent before eventually expanding to more than 80 regions including the Heterocera (or Atoll continent).
Episode two focuses on the Bay City Short Line and trolley developed under the guidance of SLRR co-founder Athos Murphy (formerly known as Michael Linden).
In episode three, both Drax and Hrdtop75 explore the ONSR (Okemo Nakiska & Southern Railway), located in the snowland regions of the Sansara continent. The ONSR spans across 13 regions and serves 10 stations for a roundtrip averaging about 22 minutes.
Episode four highlights the communities surrounding the ZZR (Zany Zen Railway), which was built by Zen Swords-Galway. As you travel the ZZR, you’ll discover a variety of quirky communities and unique attractions including the small Welsh seaside town Little Coverston.
The series concludes in episode five featuring an interview with VP of Product Operations Patch Linden, who discusses the important role of railways within the expansive infrastructure of the massive Bellisseria continents (where thousands of Residents reside within Linden Homes).
Drax will be joined by many of the interview subjects featured in the series during a special SL17B Q&A and screening event held inworld June 23 at noon SLT. You can also watch the event live or archived on YouTube.

The news can be a little scary as of late, and when you’re cooped up inside it’s easy to get stuck in a loop of not-so-positive thoughts. In fact, our brains are wired to remember negative experiences more easily than moments of kindness. However, it is absolutely possible to change your mental habits to make your day to day more fulfilling, and not just by watching videos of dog dancing competitions. Although there’s nothing wrong with that.
An important step in this process is mindfulness. The act of being truly present and appreciating the moment has appeared in many belief systems, both religious and secular. No matter what school of thought guides you, we all have beating hearts that get tired from working overtime due to stress. Meditation has been proven to reduce anxiety and even improve your physical health.
It’s important to take care of yourself, not just for your benefit, but also so you can be around the people important to you for as long as possible.
If you’d like to take a moment to be still in nature or quietly contemplate, there are many soothing locations in Second Life for a virtual meditation session. We hope these places can help you feel free from worry.
Chinook Rockies 3SL: A mountainous region dappled with lush patches of trees and waterfalls to help you take some deep breaths. Isle of Pandasia: This surreal cluster of small, mossy islands is a great place to admire birds, lily pads, and glittering rock bridges. You might even see a giant floating fish! Botanical: For the avatars with green thumbs, Botanical is a great place to take a peaceful walk surrounded by a variety of plants or get ideas to cultivate the garden of your virtual world dreams. Star Journey: If you’d like to take your “me time” with a side of cosmic splendor, this stunning collection of sky galleries is truly otherworldly. Saddles Art Gallery & Ballroom: Take a stroll through this enchanting garden adorned with artwork that is complemented by the sound of wind chimes and birdsong.

We have been very pleased to see the response to the return of last names back in April. The response thus far has been mostly positive, with some residents opting to wait for names that feel more personal to them.
Much as we did with the original legacy surnames, we plan to update and change the available last names regularly. That way, a good variety of first and last name combinations are available at any given moment. We are taking a number of factors into consideration on making the decision about when to change up the names, most importantly how popular, or unpopular, a name is.
Today, we are announcing the retirement of some of the last names from the first round.
Effective Thursday, June 25 the following names will no longer be available for purchase:
All residents that have purchased name changes using these last names will retain ownership of the name, but no more additional purchases of these names will be available.
If you wish to claim one of these last names for yourself, now is your last chance! Be sure to do so no later than Wednesday, June 24th, as the names will no longer be available for purchase.
Simultaneously, ten new last name options will be made available for purchase. These new names will be announced upon release, so stay tuned!

There are several long-standing communities in Second Life who - year after year - celebrate the vibrancy, camaraderie and dedication to the common interest of their community. From role-play to theme, these groups find an enjoyable place on the Grid to not just visit, but to call home.

One such community is the 1920s Berlin Project - who this week is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Second Life! A decade of fun is a monumental landmark that is worthy of some parties to remember! There will be musical performances, dancing, art exhibitions, and more than likely and more than likely Jo Yardley (the Frou and proprietor of the establishment) sharing some of that infamous Schnapps. A full list of events in celebration of this occasion is available on their website.  Plan accordingly!

For a taste of what life in 1920s Berlin was like, drop by for the party - but be sure to dress the part! These celebrations only last for this  week, but the 1920s Berlin Project has special events and meetups weekly - so if you miss out this week ( and why would you?) you can always swing by when the mood strikes.

Like many of you, we are feeling a combination of horror and outrage over the history of racism against Black lives. What we continue to witness is deeply disturbing and demanding of immediate social change.
The killing of George Floyd seen on video around the world is only one in a long and unacceptable series of violent and racist attacks and discriminatory behavior directed against people of color.
We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter, all victims of systemic oppression and violence, and with Black communities across the U.S., the globe, and the virtual world in condemning racism and any and all actions that promote division.
Our mission at Second Life has always been to help build a better world, and in support of Black Lives Matter, we will be donating $10,000 each to three charities that are active in helping to fight oppression and injustice including the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
How can you help? This weekend, you can participate in the Stand for Justice fundraising effort dedicated to raising funds for Black Lives Matter, Black Visions Collective, Campaign Zero, the National Police Accountability Project, and a Split Bail Fund benefiting 38+ bail funds nationwide. We also highly encourage you to sign petitions, text, call, or donate to show your support, acceptance, tolerance, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.
Now is the time for us to come together as a community and to stand up for what is right, just, and decent. We hope that you will stand with us in our fight for a better world and in recognition that Black Lives Matter today and every day.

Today is the kickoff for Second Pride, and as we all know, things are going to be a little different this year. In the wake of many canceled celebrations in the physical world, we hope to make this Pride Month extra special, because the dignity in representation is priceless. Pride celebrations have become more and more inclusive over the years, going from gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender representations to a broader spectrum of gender expression and orientations.
The phrase “Silence is Complicity” has appeared on many banners over the last week, and that sentiment certainly rings true with us. In recognition of intersectionality and the importance of allyship, the organizers have declared that this year’s theme is “together.” We all face different challenges, but standing up for each other provides the strength to keep going.
Come help us put the unity in community ❤️
There are so many awesome events scheduled to celebrate love and equality. In addition to Second Pride, be sure to visit several of the simultaneous Pride celebrations going on across the grid including London Pride, Burrow Pride Fest, Pride Festival SL, and SL Pride at Home.

This week’s “Second Life Destinations” video explores “The Empire of Dreaming Books,” an elaborate region that features a vast system of tunnels and catacombs worth getting lost in. If you venture far enough, you’ll also encounter the largest bookcase that you will find in any world - virtual or otherwise.

Inspiration for the project comes from a passion for the Zamonia series of books by German author Walter Moers, according to Num Bing who co-created the elaborate region with her boyfriend Clifton Howlet.
“There are books everywhere,” says Bing. “There’s no electricity. It’s [filled with] candle lights [and] all kinds of little book shops, restaurants [and] little houses...Outside the little city, we have added all the pretty little things that you like for kind of quiet serene moments. There’s a small stream, a garden, and trees.”
The ambitious project represents the first Second Life region created by the duo.
“Our visitors and all of their positive feedback have surprised and humbled us, and we are both very excited to see how much our creation is being enjoyed,” says Bing.
