Lean back with a coconut and pet an adorable sloth at Chankanaab

Some of us may have started out the shelter in place phase with regular virtual happy hours and group video chats, but as this period of isolation stretches on, many of those activities faded away. Video call burnout is real, and pandemic or not, most people get a little bummed out by a monotonous routine. Interacting with your environment in Second Life and teleporting to regions with different terrains and weather conditions is a great way to mix things up. This week, I have some suggestions on how to make breaking out of that summer slump even more enticing.

According to the internet, here are some of the silliest 2020 holidays in the next couple weeks:

1. Tooth Fairy Day (August 22)

You're never too old! Throw a fairy party filled with sweet treats at one of these fantastical spots.

2. Ride The Wind Day (August 23)

What does that even mean? It's the anniversary of the first human-powered flight. But in Second Life, we can fly any day of the week. For those who haven't taken to the air in a while, Inspire Space Park and Forest of Mystical Dreams both have beautiful floating islands.

3. Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day (August 28)

If you're like me, pets are life. Read the Rainbow Bridge poem if you dare, it's a tearjerker. But you'll always have the memories. Have a tea party and share some of your favorite pet stories with friends.

4. World Coconut Day (September 2)

Don't have to tell me twice. Drinking out of a coconut and laying on the beach sounds like absolute bliss.

5. Beyonce's Birthday (September 4)

Okay, not technically a holiday but can you imagine the world without her? Get glammed up and remember how powerful you are.

If you'd like to observe one of these unusual holidays inworld, please upload a photo to our Flickr!

Shyla the Super Gecko’s exhibition at The Glinka Gallery shows us the spirited activity within one of Second Life’s many cathartic outlets: poetry.

Shyla’s work is informed by her personal experiences and passions as a person with a disability concerned about social justice issues. She writes to express herself, especially during these times of limited outdoor travel, and hopes to create material that others can relate to.

The Glinka Gallery, run by real world novelist and poet Wolfgang Glinka, comprises four galleries dedicated to fine art, photography, poetry, music, and dance by SL artists. The aesthetic is a fun blend of modern and minimalist with surreal accents that make the space welcoming and engaging.

Shyla’s work is in the Frank O’Hara Building. Named after the notable writer, this building is dedicated to poetry. Some of her work takes the form of Fibonacci poems, where the number of words per line are determined by the mathematical sequence which starts with 0 and 1 and the next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it. This adds a visually alluring element to the poetry, with pieces resembling diamonds, triangles, or hourglass shapes.

Second Life has provided an opportunity for virtual recreation as well. You might catch Shyla hanging out with friends, going to concerts, or even on the slopes, as she is an avid snowboarder.

Shyla would like us to know that there are plenty of places for fans and budding poets to try out, adding, “The SL poetry community is vibrant. There are daily opportunities to share work. An ability to be vulnerable in an environment of trust and respect. Sabreman Carter hosts daily open mics. Circes’ New Poet Sanctuary and Hotel Chelsea’s Sunday Spoken Word feature amazing poets in SL.”

For more in-world poetry, Shyla suggests The Blue Angel Poets Dive (SL’s oldest continuously running open mic), and Poet’s Plunder run by Klannex Northmead. Northmead also maintains The Apple, a calendar of SL poetry events.

One of Second Life’s role-playing communities involves steampunk fandom. For those unfamiliar with the term, steampunk is a genre of science fiction/science fantasy that takes place during the era of steam power (usually the British Victorian era or the American “Wild West”) in which the fashion, technology, and physical settings are influenced by designs from the future. The aesthetic can be anachronistic, containing futuristic elements that are set in the past, or retrofuturistic, where the design is inspired by depictions of the future made in an earlier period.

Residents can visit a number of steampunk regions to be immersed in a wondrous mixture of time and imagine what might have been. The decor often contains a sense of whimsy and magic, with polished brass, plenty of iron, and wood. Leather clothing is quite common, as are clocks/watches with visible gears and thick goggles to protect your eyes while flying airships or welding.

The marketplace has tons of incredibly creative steampunk items, from tophats to Victorian furniture. You can also take inspiration from notable steampunk films, such as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and The City of Lost Children.

For those who just want to see what others are up to before diving in, check out this chat on the forum. Steampunk is an easy style to experiment with, since the accessories are so distinct. You can start out with a monocle and a watch on a gold chain and take it from there!

A whimsical and surreal adventure awaits any curious traveler who arrives at Wonderland.

Creators Nips and Lucifer Alpha compressed a stunning amount of detail into a relatively small region, with Nips describing their  stylistic goals as “vivid colors, dense, lush landscaping, and splashes of inexplicable whimsy.”

This quality over quantity approach to space has fostered a disarming vibe conducive to intimacy, with many Residents staying for hours and often coming back with friends. It’s like they distilled the allure of a trendy coffeeshop and the serenity of a sculpture garden; Wonderland embraces the spectacular while deftly omitting any source of intimidation.

Part of what makes Wonderland’s environment so welcoming is a great balance of open space and shelter under luminous trees, tall mushrooms, or other fanciful structures. In fact, Nips says that the many romantic nooks are quickly becoming popular date spots for couples.

Exploration of the sky above will lead to many photogenic floating islands with varying themes, and keep an eye out for a flying whale! Wonderland has some humorous details as well, with Easter eggs from beloved films like Hook, Shrek, and maybe more for meticulous observers.

In keeping with SL’s sense of community, Wonderland’s creation was a hugely collaborative effort, with Nips and Lucifer Alpha sourcing content from some of the best creators and artists in SL. They would like to express gratitude to LOVE, HPMD, Boudoir, Bryn Oh, Mistero Hifeng, and Curio Obscura for helping to make the place what it is.

Whether you have just a moment or all the time in the world, stopping by Wonderland is an absolute must.

Careful, unsuspecting traveler: what appears to have once been an idyllic medieval village is now inhabited by a dark force. Midnight Dreams is a huge region with many obscure nooks and ominous dens.

The name Midnight Dreams was chosen very purposefully, as a notecard explains: “Midnight... the border between light and darkness... a day ends, and a new one gets born in that magical instance... it's the portal of the dream world…”
This gloomy role-playing community is an English-speaking 8xp CSS (the grid-wide Community Combat System, made by Suzanna Soyinka) so those who speak other languages must use a translator. This region is also open to observers intrigued by the macabre, as long as you wear a tag.
Upon entering the region, a menu of postcards illustrates the different supernatural beings you can transform into, each with varying strengths and attributes. In addition to vampires, there are demons, lycans, and even cyborgs, among others. Some of these character choices even have subcategories, which speaks to the depth of detail poured into this creation.
It would take hours to explore this region thoroughly. Some of the highlights include a cathedral, marked by stained glass and jagged edges in the gothic manner, and a mysterious cocktail lounge bathed in deep red decor. In one remote catacomb, candles provide just enough light to reveal a bloodstained carpet leading to one of the Vampire King’s many thrones. Those bold enough to take a seat must cross a threshold of decaying bones.
Trade in the summer heat for a ghostly chill at Midnight Dreams tonight!
Midnight Dreams
Midnight Dreams is a dark roleplay and optional combat environment focused on Vampires welcoming to all species. Featuring a variety of things to see, including a dark lit asylum, a floating lighthouse, an ancient, rune-scrawled shipwreck, a secret underground dungeon and a beautiful butterfly lake. Also connected to a Medieval Village, if you feel so inclined.

Anthropomorphism, the attribution of human traits, emotions, and cognitive abilities to non-human entities, has appeared in art and storytelling in various cultures throughout history. As a vehicle for the expression of self in three-dimensional form, it comes as no surprise that Second Life has established itself as the most diverse universe for Anthropomorphic Residents to congregate and celebrate their diversity.

Luskwood, a popular treehouse-themed region founded by Eltee Statosky, was one of the first places to become an Anthro hotspot and has inspired many others, as well as the Anthro avatar design company of the same name.
Lincesa Pawpad and her friend Craftish created Sudden Stop Furry Sandbox to provide a friendly place for discussion and recreation, and the low lag makes this a great place to create and share builds. A peaceful environment is maintained by strict rules against griefing and harassment (moderators are on call to step in should a conflict arise) so that Anthropomorphic Residents from all backgrounds can hang out as authentic extensions of themselves.
Don’t worry if you have trouble entering this region: Sudden Stop is a homestead, meaning it can only hold 25 people at once, 5 of which must be premium. However, it is definitely worth a potential wait. Lincesa Pawpad says of Sudden Stop: “I consider and treat Sudden stop like it’s my home, but it is open to the public for people to use and hang out at.”
Also called Furries as an umbrella term for this diverse community, Anthro personas can appear as real life animals, extant or extinct, or take a cue from mythology or imagination. Just like human avatars, their personal style can adopt themes from other role-playing communities, like Goth or Fantasy. Ritzu Clawtooth aptly calls them “walking art,” and Sudden Stop is proud to bring people together in the liberated form of non-traditional representations.
Check out the awesome Anthro Avatars available today if you’d like to visit a Furry friendly region, although everyone is welcome.

VIRTUAL WORLDS DOCUMENTARY
Directed by: Olivia De Camps
Produced by: Tom Sidi
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Every day, all around the world, millions of people log onto virtual worlds such as Second Life. Through a series of individual stories, this documentary aims to explore the core of basic human interaction. For many individuals, virtual worlds not only serve as escapism, but also morph into an expansion of their real life— where genuine friendships are formed, economy thrives, and often romance is built upon a virtual image that is frequently transferred to the real world. Users have the ability to immerse in the world they have always dreamed of living in, exploring their gender, racial, or sexual identity and creating strong bonds with people they might never get a chance to meet off screen. As we have been stuck at home without a possibility to physically meet, the idea of a digital world has become even more attractive.
The documentary is directed by Olivia De Camps, a Dominican-American film student in her Senior year at New York University Tisch School of The Arts and produced by Tom Sidi, a TV and commercial producer. The film will be submitted to film festivals and uploaded online.

This week’s Second Life Destinations video explores Voodoo Land, which shares a direct border with the cyberpunk region Little World. Created by long-term SL residents and designers Sofie Janic and Monkey Wonder, Voodoo Land also has an urban noir aesthetic, but with a hedonistic flair reminiscent of Las Vegas or New Orleans.

This virtual Sin City of sorts is an expansive region to explore in detail and take photographs; storefronts and buildings bear unique neon signs and there is an abundance of colorful street art ranging from abstract geometric patterns to murals. Turn the corner and you might see a digital billboard.
There is also a basketball court, arcade, and a skatepark for recreation. In fact, this week’s video features Los Angeles-based author Antoine Wilson, who rediscovered his passion for skateboarding in Second Life while sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here he explores Voodoo Land and brings out that old board to try some ollies. There is a lot of open space for skaters of all experience levels, so feel free to give it a shot.
There are also several shopping spots to choose from, including Voodoo Mainstore and Vegas Tattoo. If you need a place to rest, plop down next to an adorable pair of pugs in a rooftop pool. They really thought of everything.

This year’s theme for our SL17B celebrations is “vacations and road trips” - and, in this spirit, we are pleased to debut today a five-part mini-series dedicated to the unique history, culture and communities surrounding one of the most popular modes of travel in our virtual world - railroads in Second Life.
Our virtual journalist Draxtor Despres recently took a ride on the rails of SL to travel across miles of virtual railroad tracks spanning across the grid. Along the way, he makes multiple stops to meet a wide variety of colorful characters and creative communities.

In episode one, Hrdtop75 Deluxe of the Virtual Railroad Consortium joins Drax for a look back at the origins and history of the Second Life Railroad (SLRR) system which originated in 2003 within the northwest part of the Sansara continent before eventually expanding to more than 80 regions including the Heterocera (or Atoll continent).
Episode two focuses on the Bay City Short Line and trolley developed under the guidance of SLRR co-founder Athos Murphy (formerly known as Michael Linden).
In episode three, both Drax and Hrdtop75 explore the ONSR (Okemo Nakiska & Southern Railway), located in the snowland regions of the Sansara continent. The ONSR spans across 13 regions and serves 10 stations for a roundtrip averaging about 22 minutes.
Episode four highlights the communities surrounding the ZZR (Zany Zen Railway), which was built by Zen Swords-Galway. As you travel the ZZR, you’ll discover a variety of quirky communities and unique attractions including the small Welsh seaside town Little Coverston.
The series concludes in episode five featuring an interview with VP of Product Operations Patch Linden, who discusses the important role of railways within the expansive infrastructure of the massive Bellisseria continents (where thousands of Residents reside within Linden Homes).
Drax will be joined by many of the interview subjects featured in the series during a special SL17B Q&A and screening event held inworld June 23 at noon SLT. You can also watch the event live or archived on YouTube.

The news can be a little scary as of late, and when you’re cooped up inside it’s easy to get stuck in a loop of not-so-positive thoughts. In fact, our brains are wired to remember negative experiences more easily than moments of kindness. However, it is absolutely possible to change your mental habits to make your day to day more fulfilling, and not just by watching videos of dog dancing competitions. Although there’s nothing wrong with that.
An important step in this process is mindfulness. The act of being truly present and appreciating the moment has appeared in many belief systems, both religious and secular. No matter what school of thought guides you, we all have beating hearts that get tired from working overtime due to stress. Meditation has been proven to reduce anxiety and even improve your physical health.
It’s important to take care of yourself, not just for your benefit, but also so you can be around the people important to you for as long as possible.
If you’d like to take a moment to be still in nature or quietly contemplate, there are many soothing locations in Second Life for a virtual meditation session. We hope these places can help you feel free from worry.
Chinook Rockies 3SL: A mountainous region dappled with lush patches of trees and waterfalls to help you take some deep breaths. Isle of Pandasia: This surreal cluster of small, mossy islands is a great place to admire birds, lily pads, and glittering rock bridges. You might even see a giant floating fish! Botanical: For the avatars with green thumbs, Botanical is a great place to take a peaceful walk surrounded by a variety of plants or get ideas to cultivate the garden of your virtual world dreams. Star Journey: If you’d like to take your “me time” with a side of cosmic splendor, this stunning collection of sky galleries is truly otherworldly. Saddles Art Gallery & Ballroom: Take a stroll through this enchanting garden adorned with artwork that is complemented by the sound of wind chimes and birdsong.

We have been very pleased to see the response to the return of last names back in April. The response thus far has been mostly positive, with some residents opting to wait for names that feel more personal to them.
Much as we did with the original legacy surnames, we plan to update and change the available last names regularly. That way, a good variety of first and last name combinations are available at any given moment. We are taking a number of factors into consideration on making the decision about when to change up the names, most importantly how popular, or unpopular, a name is.
Today, we are announcing the retirement of some of the last names from the first round.
Effective Thursday, June 25 the following names will no longer be available for purchase:
Alpaca
Covfefe
Damballar
Float
Jazzhands
Mainsail
Nimble
Piggins
Plumday
Yeetly
All residents that have purchased name changes using these last names will retain ownership of the name, but no more additional purchases of these names will be available.
If you wish to claim one of these last names for yourself, now is your last chance! Be sure to do so no later than Wednesday, June 24th, as the names will no longer be available for purchase.
Simultaneously, ten new last name options will be made available for purchase. These new names will be announced upon release, so stay tuned!

A couple weeks ago I wrote about Dancing in Second Life, and I wanted to elaborate on something I had mentioned: animation overrides. This is a scripted attachment that changes the manner in which your avatar’s body moves. Like most things in SL, they are created by Residents and the marketplace has a multitude of styles if you’d like to add a little oomph to the way you walk, jump, stand, etc.

You can get a set of animations or even a single gesture if you’re looking for something very specific. There are AOs made for females, males, and some are unisex. Some basic AO sets come with dances as well, which you can try out using the HUD. Swim like a mermaid, strut without a care in the world, or bellydance on a colorful Oriental rug. I even saw an AO that replicated the final dance scene in Dirty Dancing, so there is certainly no shortage of options. The animations category of the Destination Guide has many great shops in which you can demo different styles before purchasing.
It’s important to note that certain situations, like pose balls or sitting on furniture, will require you to turn off your AO to function properly. This script will make that automatic, if you prefer. Since most Bento heads come with a selection of facial expressions, you can decide if you want an AO for the entire body or from the neck down. If you don’t know where to start, a tutorial should make the variety of animations a little more approachable. Our bodies are such a huge part of how we express ourselves in RL, so why not extend that element to your presence inworld?
If you have a photo or video of yourself being particularly lively, silly, sleepy, etc., submit it to our Flickr!
Tara Linden
With countless regions, parties, activities, and ways to modify your appearance, it’s safe to say that there’s always something to do in Second Life. However, it’s understandable that one might feel stuck or overwhelmed by all the choices. I don’t think I’m the only one who gets anxiety from spending 30 minutes on Netflix trying to decide what to watch.
Luckily, there is a vast selection of topics under discussion in our community forums to help guide you through those moments.

New Residents might have trouble looking for a specific item in the marketplace, finding the avatar that’s right for them, or understanding SL terminology that feels very natural to long term Residents. I definitely thought they were talking about cupcakes the first time I saw the term Bakes on Mesh.
The main sections are People, Places and Events, Creation, Technology, Commerce, Land, and International. They cover just about everything you could imagine: machinima, land rentals, relationships, etc. For miscellaneous and support related questions, you can always go to the Answers section. And the best part is this discussion involves other Residents, all of whom were newbies at one point.
I love that there is a Missed Connections section. SL is such a great place to meet people, but sometimes things get in the way the first time around and this is a great way to get a second chance at reaching out to someone. The forums are like an encyclopedia of Second Life information for those “What in the virtual world is going on?” moments, and I encourage everybody to check them out!

Experience the timeless beauty of the beaches along the Baja Coast in this serene archipelago comprising the three regions Baja Norte, Baja Isles, and Baja Bay.

Baja Coast was inspired by the white sands, desert flora, and surf culture of the real life coast that runs along Mexico’s western peninsula. The aesthetic of its natural environment has made it a very popular spot for ecotourists interested in enjoying a tranquil paradise in a sustainable way.
Designer Lauren Bentham, also known for her dark places like “Everwinter,” shows her creative versatility with this sunny and relaxing spot dappled with succulents and palm trees. Hidden nooks provide spaces for a romantic moment or focused solitude, and food trucks can be the meeting point for cheersing coconut drinks with friends.
Grab a couple swimsuits for your photo shoot along the water, you’re going to want to stay at this dreamy beach for a while. Sit back and unwind today with a visit to Baja Coast.

When there aren’t a lot of positive headlines, sometimes it’s hard to balance being an informed citizen and preserving your sanity. For those of you not familiar with one of the most epic TV friendships of recent herstory, Christina Yang and Meredith Grey had a tradition of doing an impromptu jig together when things got overwhelming.

(via GIPHY)
During moments like this, I think we could all benefit by following their lead. Especially now that many of us are more sedentary than usual, it’s easy to forget that dance is such a natural mode of expression; distinct forms of dance have developed in almost all human cultures throughout history.
Second Life has an array of clubs and lounges, but when the virtual world is your oyster, you can dance wherever you want. Many animation overrides have a fun selection of dance moves to get you started, but don’t hesitate to peruse the Second Life Marketplace if you’d like a particular style. I’ve seen everything from ballet to reggaeton. Beginners, fear not, as some regions have dance balls that automatically put you in party mode when you stand on them. Our forums are also a great place to get the inside scoop from other Residents if you ever feel stuck when trying out something new. Feel free to take some inspiration from videos Residents have submitted to our Flickr.

An inworld dance party is a safe and relaxing way to have fun and just be in the moment. Everybody deserves to let go of their worries every once in a while, so dance it out!

Does your avatar need a furry friend? From more traditional options like dogs and cats to farm animals and exotic creatures, there is a delightful array of pets available at the Second Life Marketplace. No need to worry about whether your landlord approves or if you have the space.
You can also pamper your pet with stylish collars, beds, and other accessories. Will your in-world buddy be a couch potato or a ball of energy? It’s up to you! They say pets take on their owners’ traits. Plus, just like people often ask to pet a dog they pass on the street, virtual pets can make great conversation starters. It might just be time for you to open the cat cafe of your dreams. Check out the Animals section of our Destination Guide for some awesome pet-spiration today.

The latest “Second Life Destinations” video takes viewers on a trip to Paris in Second Life.

Designed by longtime SL resident Trouble Dethly Crystal, Vive La Paris was built as a special gift by the creator for his girlfriend in Argentina.
“Whether it is her favorite song posters adorning the walls of the music store, the outdoor gallery of some my favorite images by her, to the cheese and flower shop and everything in between, the region is my love letter to her,” says Dethly.
Highlights of the region featured in the video include the Eiffel Tower, shops, cafes, and an outdoor exhibit of Second Life photography.
“Initially, the region was only meant to be rented for two weeks like the other date experiences I have taken her on, where I would hire a couple of live singers for a private show...This time I even had a friend roleplay as a waitress so we could experience a full-service dinner. It was after this date that Ara and I decided to keep the region to share with others to explore, to use as a backdrop for their photographs, or even take their partner or friends for a full-service roleplay dinner.”
Vive La Paris is only one of several vacation destinations you can explore in Second Life. Take a look at this recent list of seven of our favorite virtual travel hot spots worth exploring from the comfort of home.
Vive La Paris
Each footstep tread softly upon its cobblestone streets, echoes in my thoughts of you. There is such beauty and depth found in the richness of its history and culture. Its withstood so much yet it endures, still breathtaking and strong. You remind me of Paris.

The latest “Second Life Destinations” video explores the new community event Pride Festival SL, which runs from June 24-28.

Dimitri Cloud (Juicy Mango in SL), who co-founded and manages the event with Eva Artemisia, organized the event as a way to bring the community together during the pandemic.
“We went through this pandemic worldwide, and we think that more than ever, Second Life is a safe hub, a safe place,” he says.
The theme for Pride Festival 2020 is “We are fire!”
Fire can be sublime and life-sustaining, a powerful energy that provides warmth and light. The colorful stages pop with energy against the desert backdrop, and so will your outfit! The organizers feel that it is so important to remind each other we are not alone during times like these, and we couldn't agree more.
The event will feature parties with live DJs and music, shopping, gifts, and more. Check out the official Facebook page for instructions on how to join the contests and raffles. There will also be a fashion show art gallery.
Not to be overlooked is the wide aisle leading to the center of the stage, which is emblazoned with the words "Black Lives Matter," perhaps inspired by the street mural in Washington DC.
This event will also feature workshops highlighting the needs for mental and physical wellbeing that marginalized communities don’t always have access to.
Please visit their website for more information and visit the event inworld. We hope to see you there!

ABOUT OZ LINDEN
VP, Second Life Engineering
Prior to joining Second Life, Oz spent many years developing all sorts of networking code -- eventually including contributions to the development of HTTP and from there to open source SIP (voice over IP). Internet Telephony turned into something of a corporate nightmare, so he looked around for something more fun. A friend who was working at the Lab recruited Oz to help with the open-source program. Since he had already played a little with Second Life, he thought that it certainly met the "fun" criteria but he had no idea just how much fun. Nine years later, Oz is responsible for Second Life Engineering and having the time of his life. He is proud to be working on a product that means so much to so many people.
