The virtual world can be an enjoyably odd place. While it might have the same trees, grass, and skies as the one outside, it differs in a surprising number of subtle (and not-so-subtle) ways. The grass could be neon purple, the sky filled with mythological creatures, and the trees might just have a gleeful disregard for the laws of physics. This week, the Second Life Destination Guide is proud to be your ticket to a taste of the delightful oddities that recently caught our eye.

Take the first steps through a forested island in a forgotten land before solving a dark and horrific mystery with a Japanese twist. Brave provincial ballrooms populated by beings from your darkest imagination, or traverse kaleidoscopic technicolor cliffs in a geometrically-reforming land that may even boggle Escher.

After about four months as interim CEO, working closely with Bob Komin, the management team, and the board, we've decided we are ready to start the search for a new CEO. I'll be leaving day-to-day management of the company and continuing in my role on the board, including helping in the search to find a great CEO. I will also be continuing my work with my new company, LoveMachine. Bob will lead Linden Lab while we conduct the search. It's been an intense few months of transition, and we all feel like we are in a better place now, with a clearer sense of direction and more focus, and are ready to bring someone new into the mix as a leader.

When our developers first saw the Leap Motion controller they couldn’t wait to get their hands on one. Thankfully, we were able to get a pre-production development kit and built demos to explore its capabilities in Second Life. The demos included tests of flight controls, object manipulation, and avatar gestures.

-8WkyBBwYTI

This work was strictly experimental, but it showed the power of Second Life as a platform for exploring gesture-based interactions with controllers like the Leap Motion, and we’re happy to be able to share the code with you as a starting point for your own explorations.

If you have a Leap Motion controller and would like to experiment with the Second Life Viewer, you can find the source code for these experiments at http://bitbucket.org/simon_linden/viewer-rabbit. The indra/newview/llleapmotioncontroller.cpp file contains most new functionality. The Viewer is built to work in several different modes. These modes can be used to control the avatar while flying, send data into Second Life for scripts to intercept, detect hand motions that trigger avatar gestures, or control the camera and avatar movement. To switch between these modes use the "LeapMotionTestMode" value in the Debug Settings, accessible from the Advanced menu.

To give our experiments a shot you will need get the source mentioned above and contact www.leapmotion.com to join their developer program and obtain the SDK. Currently only Windows Viewers are supported, but other platforms could be added by linking in the appropriate Leap Motion SDK.

Many Residents participate in the LindeX® exchange - trading L$ and contributing to the Second Life economy on a regular basis. As part of our commitment to prevent fraud and comply with applicable regulations, there are limitations in place that cap the trading volume for each Resident’s account at certain tiers.

We have recently reviewed and adjusted these tier limits to better accommodate the needs of Second Life Residents. For most, these changes will be beneficial, and you can review the details of your current trading limits by logging into your account and visiting your order history.

If you find that you need higher limits, you can request a tier limit review through our support system. Simply submit a ticket --> Billing --> LindeX Billing and Trading Limits Review Request (for basic accounts) or  Billing and L$ -> LindeX Tier Review ticket options (for premium accounts).

Happy trading!

"I have been having nightmares as long as I remember,” says Kiana Writer - one of the many talented creators behind MadPea’s latest story-driven survival/horror game in Second Life,“My first one was at the age of four when I was being chased by rhinos in the dark woods. I thought everyone was dreaming like me and was surprised when I realized this wasn't the case … Second Life gave me the tools to have my nightmares become fully immersive games!”

UNIA, the newest game from MadPea has hit the grid - and it’s a big one! Over the past two years, the MadPea team has been creating and scripting a story in which you battle the odds to unravel one piece of a larger mystery. The scope and magnitude of the project grew with the introduction of Experience Tools in Second Life - an opportunity that the MadPea team saw to optimize the gameplay and interaction of the experience you will have when you join the game.

UNIA is a spooky adventure into a nightmarish world; a survival/horror game with twists and turns lurking in every shadow. Prepare to solve puzzles, fight monsters, and immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of this adventure.

Each week, the Destination Guide editorial team reviews dozens upon dozens of new locations and events - last time we blogged, we recommended a few interesting destinations we thought you’d enjoy. Once again, we’d like to highlight a few of the more interesting new submissions that stood out to our editorial team.

Recently, we’ve had a glut of great installation art. These evocative installations carry a variety of themes: from desolation and mortality to innocence in the face of a giant fish. Rounding things out are a night club hiding in a library, and a charity for at-risk youth. If you're looking for new places to explore in Second Life, you may want to check out some of these regions, or join the fun and submit your own.

The Arrival

The Arrival: In this art installation from Rose Borchovski, you'll venture to an emotional and immersive art-landscape about The Arrival of the Fish, the next chapter of The Susa Bubbles adventures. In this installation, the Susa Bubbles caught a fish, while they admire how big it is, the fish dies. They wonder if they are to blame. Or search for your own explanation...

This Wednesday evening, long-time Second Life resident and artist DC Spensley (aka DanCoyote Antonelli in SL) is presenting a free, mixed reality theater performance in San Francisco. If you’re in the area, come see the show in person - details from DanCoyote are below.

avant garden.png

Avant Garden, a mixed reality performance presented by DC Spensley

Avant Garden is a mixed reality theater performance by Artistic Director and Virtual Worlds Producer DC Spensley. Mixed reality in this sense means a combination of live and virtual reality dance performers interacting by means of a rear projection screen. The virtual team is called the ZERO SkyDancers, an ensemble that has been performing professionally since 2006 at art biennials, festivals and commissions, log in from all over North America using their computers to rehearse and perform together in simulated space. Imagine people controlling puppets over the internet all together on a stage similar to a video game environment. The live dancer (physically present) Kathleen Moore (of Dance Generators) performs in front of the screen allowing her to interact with the virtual performers and stage set.

Avant Garden is a combination of avant garde and walled garden, and refers to the challenge presented in offering virtual reality theater to a physical audience. Avant Garden is an experiment in doing exactly that: sharing virtual theater with a live audience.

This show is only for the live audience in the physical theater, but for those unable to attend, it sounds like performances for inworld audiences are also planned for the future. As details become available, we’ll share them here!

Last week, we introduced the first video in a new Second Life tutorial series called QuickTips. Each of these tutorials aims to help newer users by introducing them to basic features, functions or activities in Second Life.

Our

focused on the simple process of changing your avatar in less than 60 seconds using the free avatars built into the Second Life Viewer. That’s a great skill to have as a newcomer -- but many users want to stand out in style or perhaps just look a bit more unique. Why look like everyone else when there are thousands of fashions and avatar accessories to choose from?

This week’s QuickTips video introduces new users to the fundamentals of how to shop like a pro in Second Life. Watch this clip to learn the basics on discovering places to shop, as well as transaction tips and even unpacking your items.

Soon you’ll be shopping up a storm as you stroll through the many virtual shopping hot spots in SL or browse for items via the web on the Marketplace.

“Everyone has their own interpretation of the future as something different, but this is our interpretation of it.”

Meet StarRavenSAT, General Manager of InSilico, and Stark Osterham, Manager and Lore Master, in the latest episode of the Drax Files: World Makers. StarRavenSat finds hope even in the throes of a desperate civilization, and Stark shares his creative process with his daughter who serves as a source of inspiration even as she herself learns the importance of creative expression from her father. Populated with a full cast of characters improvised by Stark, InSilico’s history is created in realtime by all participants - from builders, storytellers, scripters, and players. This type of spontaneous collaboration focuses different flavors of creative energy into creative play - leading to an immersive and exciting experience.

All the way from the far-reaching borders of Germany and the Netherlands, Draxtor Despres joins Death Row Design’s Jaimy Hancroft to chat about a little more than just the weather -- in this episode of the Drax Files.

Death Row Designs is a staple in Second Life  - providing a post-apocalyptic and dystopian spin on fashion, decor and architecture. Jaimy’s dark, grungy style has made her a favorite of many Residents over the 10 years that she’s been in Second Life, and now she is able to support herself with her brand.

With help from her sister Eowyn Swords - who does 3D modelling for Death Row Designs - Jaimy’s unique and creative work appears in a variety of events from the Arcade Gacha to many of the big shopping events inworld.

Another compelling aspect of Jaimy’s work in Second Life, is her commitment to Fantasy Faire to benefit Relay for Life of Second Life. To read more about her personal inspiration from her father, Mario, and how her culinary flare helped channel her creativity - watch the

Second Life is turning 15 this summer...but why wait to celebrate? Last month, we wrote about 15 exciting new features and other things that we have on the roadmap for this year, including lower tier prices and double allotment on Mainland, and the return of Last Names - but there’s still more to come!

As part of our year-long 15th anniversary celebration, we’re making numerous appearances inworld to talk about Second Life and the Second Life roadmap directly with our communities! These  ongoing meetups and events will provide opportunities for you to interact with and ask questions to Linden Lab executives and staffers.

SL15B_Logo_Lg.png

To kick things off, Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg will be holding two “Town Hall” chat sessions on April 20th at 9:30 a.m. (SLT/Pacific) and 1 p.m. (SLT/Pacific). Ebbe will be sharing his vision for Second Life in 2018 and beyond, as well as taking questions from the community. Got a question for Ebbe? Post it in the Community Forum thread “A Conversation with Linden Lab CEO Ebbe Altberg” in advance of next week’s meeting. Questions will be selected from submissions for as many as can be answered in the time frame. To join either meetup, head over to one of these Town Hall Regions in Second Life on April 20.

SL15B-Stroke_Small.png

In the coming months, we plan to hold additional conversations and meetups directly with many of our communities including Firestorm users/developers, Designing Worlds,  Bay City and more.

Finally, don’t forget to mark your calendars for the official SL15B Community Celebration! This year’s event, held June 17-30, is going to be spectacular! We are hearing rumblings about a few new special events linked to this year’s celebrations, too.

Stay tuned for more specific dates and details. We’ll see you inworld soon!

This June, Second Life turns 15 and we’re planning some fun ways to honor this long-standing community and invite some of the rest of the world to come check out what makes us so special! Stay tuned to this blog for more details about events to come and read on to find out about the first of many - our annual Music Fest - sponsored by Linden Lab.

In recent years we’ve taken the popular idea of music festivals and brought them into the virtual world - all the music, merriment, and good times without the sunburn. This year will mark the 4th annual Music Fest in celebration of Second Life - and we can’t wait to get grooving.

Since we started Music Fest in Second Life, we’ve held an audition showcase to highlight some of the musical talent in the Second Life community. Many of you have been performing for years in virtual venues all over the grid, and we’d love to have you come showcase your talent at the tryouts for this summer Music Fest. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, rock and roll to electronica - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!

To sign up for an audition, please complete and submit the submission form no later than May 18, 2018. While we encourage everyone to sign up, it is not a commitment on your part and does not guarantee a spot at the auditions. We will review all submissions and extend audition invitations via email to the designated contact. Each invited act will have a short audition time (5 minutes max) to play and leave an impression on a panel of judges made up of Lindens and Residents. This panel will select acts to be invited to perform at the Second Life Music Fest. Upon completion of a half hour slot at the festival, the designated contact for each act will be eligible for payment (subject to Linden’s terms and conditions).

All Residents are welcome to participate in the auditions as audience members. Again, I can’t stress enough what a great time it is to see so many musicians perform and support one another! For those who are interested, the auditions location will be shared in a future blog post. Showcase dates and times are as follows:

  • Friday, June 1, 2018 12 PM - 2 PM (SLT)

  • Saturday. June 2, 2018 from 6 PM - 8 PM (SLT)

We’ll share the location of the showcase closer to the date and will see you there!
