We very happy to announce a major milestone for an exciting update to Second Life avatars…

You might remember the first introduction back in December 2015: we opened up Resident participation for Project Bento. Bento greatly extends the avatar skeleton, allowing the creation of many new kinds of exciting content. Today we are happy to announce the next phase in the development. The Bento Viewer is now a Release Candidate Viewer! This is the last stage before becoming the official release Viewer.

bento1.png

If you are interested in avatar content creation, please give the new Viewer a try, and if you encounter problems, please let us know right away by filing a JIRA bug report. We believe the skeleton and sliders are in their final state, but the Release Candidate Viewer is intended to give us the opportunity to test with a much larger number of users to be sure we're ready to deploy throughout Second Life. It’s very important to hear about any remaining problems as soon as possible. You can also review the release notes for this Release Candidate.

bento2.png

Thanks to everyone who has made Bento possible through your ongoing enthusiasm and feedback! With your help, Bento will soon be ready for integration to the main Second Life viewer, allowing all Residents to enjoy even more innovative avatars.

Out now is a feature that is sure to make browsing your outfits a breeze… Introducing, the Visual Outfit Browser out now as part of the default viewer!

In Second Life, personalizing your avatar and expressing yourself through outfits and accessories is an art in and of itself. Bloggers, fashionistas, role-players, and pretty much everyone else knows that finding the perfect thing to wear can be a timely challenge when searching for items in your inventory by name. Creating outfits is a great way to keep some of your best looks organized and within easy reach, but what if you have lots of similarly named outfits, or can't quite remember which look you put together? With the new Visual Outfit Browser (VOB) feature, you can take snapshots, upload images, or even use an existing image from your inventory to assign a thumbnail to your outfit folders. Images should be no larger than 256 x 256 - so keep that in mind when taking your pics.  It's a great way to browse your virtual closet and get inspired for your next wardrobe change.

For more details, check out our Knowledge Base article on this feature. Get the latest browser now, have fun, and we hope you enjoy this cool new feature!

The Second Life Discussion Guidelines have moved here.

^ As a friendly reminder, please read the guidelines before commenting on the blogs or posting in the forums so you can be awesome! ^_^

This change was done by Torley Linden as part of making help easier to find... because the previous version couldn't be read by non-logged-in Residents and contained numerous formatting glitches and old references (for example, "Xstreet" instead of "Marketplace"). The meat and spirit of the Discussion Guidelines' content remains the same, and been cleaned up on the wiki help pages, where future versions can be updated easier. Please let Torley know if there are further errors to correct.

Last February we announced the limited release of the new Sunshine Viewer, which made some updates to Project Sunshine.

Now gridwide, the Sunshine V2 Viewer offers even more stability and other performance improvements. The work includes better retry logic, removes old client-side baking framework, and an assortment of appearance related bug fixes.

Another big feature that debuts with this update is the viewer support for AISV3. The bulk of the work was inventory-related, which not only sped up inventory operations but also greatly reduced the failure rate when performing outfit changes!

So if you happen to notice quicker avatar renderings, faster scene loading, seamless region crossing, or just better overall router stability, these are all objectives of Project Shining.

It will require a Viewer update, so do it now and enjoy the Sunshine!

It’s creepy, and kooky and you don’t want to miss it!

This Friday, October 30th from 10:00am SLT until 3:00pm SLT - you are most cordially invited to join us inworld for the 2015 Second Life Creepy Crawl! “What is the Creepy Crawl?” you may ask. It’s a scary-good inworld event where Lindens and Residents get dressed up in their best Halloween costumes and roam from spooky spot to spooky spot for music, dancing, and celebrating! It’s going to be a bit like a ‘pub crawl’ without the need for taxi fare.

Costumes are strongly encouraged for this event - so come out and show off your best. I am still deciding between 4 different costume choices I've put together and may have to wear all 4 at some point during the crawl. It’s a good thing we’ll have 5 hours to run amok and have fantastical fun. Just keep in mind that this event is for General and Moderate audiences when perfecting your look.

Below is the schedule and Destination Guide entries - so if you’re unable to join us for the entire duration - pop into the spot on the schedule when you can log in.

The 2015 Second Life Creepy Crawl is getting closer - don't blink or it could be upon with you little to no warning!

See you there!

I don’t know about you, but I am a 365 days of Halloween kind of person. I go home decor shopping when others go party decoration shopping, and if I deck a hall, it will most certainly be with boughs of spiderwebs and clouds of dry ice. I know that lots of us feel the same and wish stores would pack up those Winter Holiday decorations for a few more weeks and roll out more spook-tacular Halloween treats.

Now is the perfect time for us to pull out the stops and do it up in a BIG WAY. We’re looking for some of your great inworld, Halloween-themed images!

Share your pics, and your work could be featured in an upcoming email or banner campaign - with your avatar name credited of course!

Share your pic on our Official Flickr Page with the tag “SLHalloween2016” so that we can see all of your amazing work. You may submit as many as you like between now and October 5, 2016. Please include your avatar name in the image description so that we know who to credit!

We’ll showcase the chosen image(s) in an email to Residents, as well as in some banner campaigns. We’ll let the chosen image creators know via Flickr.

Tips for your submissions:

  • Make sure that your submissions are appropriate for all audiences.
  • Layout:

    • The main content of your image should be near the center and to the right of the image - similar to the images you’d see on the Second Life login page.
    • Horizontal images work best.
  • Show your avatar or avatars in a scene inworld - an image that tells a story is going to make an impression.
  • Keep your image free of additional text/logos.
  • Higher resolution images work best.
  • Check below for examples of images that we’ve used in the past.

If you need a little inspiration - catch the Halloween spirit by ghost-hunting some of the frightful haunts already submitted to the Destination Guide.

Second Life creators are taking elements of role play, re-enactment, and re-creation to allow Residents to experience different places - even in different points of time throughout history. That’s what Cyperpiper Roelefs and his team have set out to do with Luxembourg City and 1867 The Virtual Pfaffenthal.

The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg hosts an exhibit in the physical world  that enables visitors to experience Cyberpiper’s virtual Luxembourg City and 1867 The Virtual Pfaffenthal in Second Life. The exhibit also includes Oculus Rift stations for more immersive exploration.

In addition to the exhibit at The Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg, Cyberpiper has created a virtual representation of Fort Thungen in Second Life which visitors to the Musée Dräi Eechelen can access with the use of computers setup inside one of the forts rebuilt towers. These stations allow patrons to travel back and time and experience the Fort as it was years ago.

Cyberpiper has also re-created Fort Thungen for an immersive experience inside the Musée Dräi Eechelen - which is housed in the fully restored Fort. Inside one of the fort’s towers, patrons can travel back in time to explore the Fort’s history from inside Second Life.

In this episode of The Drax Files: World Makers, Cyberpiper discusses how walking and living - virtually - in historic regions enhances traditional understanding of history. Watch the video

and visit these locations in world for yourself.

Wallace Linden

kim_linden.pngLinden Lab recently welcomed a new addition to its executive ranks: Kim Salzer, who became our Vice President of Marketing, at the beginning of August. Kim (known as Kim Linden inworld) joins us from Activision Blizzard, where she was Vice President of Global Brand Management for properties like Guitar Hero and Call of Duty 2, among others. Kim brings a deep background in gaming (including experience at Electronic Arts working on massively multiplayer online games and hit sports franchises), and in online learning, and we’re excited to have her as part of the team. As an introduction to Residents, I asked Kim to tell us a bit about herself in her own words:

Q: What’s the one thing you bring from the gaming world that will be most useful to you in your position at Linden Lab?

A: Working in gaming taught me a lot about just how creative and  passionate that audience can be, and I think the same is true for the  Residents of Second Life. And SL provides so many great tools to enhance  and bring out that creativity, I’m really looking forward to helping foster that as we move into the next phase of the platform’s growth. I  want to see if we can make the range of what’s possible in Second Life  even broader.

Q: What are your goals for your new position as VP Marketing at Linden Lab?

A:  What I really want to do here is help the Lab figure out what the “X  Factor” is going to be for Second Life. When I was working on games, I  always tried to choose a single idea to focus on and bring out, an X  Factor that helped people get into the game and helped them discover all  the rest of the possibilities there. If I can help bring that kind of  focus to Second Life, I’ll be happy about how I’m doing my job.

Q: What excites you most about working on a product like Second Life?

A: I’m excited about the prospect of helping to build a product that  really empowers people to express what they’re about, and that can make a real difference in their lives. I think we’ve only just started to see  what can be done here, and I can’t wait to see where we and our  Residents can take things from here.

Linden Lab

We're in the process of rolling out some important Viewer updates, with more to come in the near future - this note is to summarize those and to alert you to some changes in the supported Viewer platforms.

Embedded Browser Upgrade

We've recently updated the web browser technology in the Viewer to use the Chromium browser technology; this does a much much better job of supporting the latest web standards and media formats. With this change, we are removing the Quicktime plugin from the Windows Viewer; that plugin has been poorly supported for a long time and a persistent source of security problems. Quicktime support will be removed on the Mac version too in a later update so that both platforms will support media in the same way. It may be that some Quicktime media will work even without the plugin, but many more modern formats such as mp3 and mp4 will work more reliably. You can try this Viewer now by downloading the "Second Life VLC Viewer" from the Alternate Viewers page.

Extended Avatar Skeletons

You've probably heard about this as the "Bento" project. This Viewer correctly displays the new bones and attachment points we're adding, giving you lots of ways to make much more sophisticated and flexible avatars at a lower cost. For more information about “Bento” visit the wiki, check out our blog, and give it a try using the Release Candidate viewer.

64 bit Viewers

The current official Viewer is built to use only 32 memory addresses, which limits how much of your computer’s memory it can use at a time. We're updating our builds so that Windows users will be able to choose between a 64 bit (large memory) version or a 32 bit (backwards compatibility) version. The 64 bit version will be much better for most users; any computer bought in the last several years should be capable of running in 64 bit mode. In fact, if you're running a 32 bit version of Windows now, you should look into upgrading to a 64 bit version; our data shows that even just upgrading your OS should reduce the frequency of crashes.  Coming soon to a project viewer near you.

Platform Versions

In order to be able to continue making progress on these and other projects, we'll be making some changes to which Viewers and configurations we support; this week we will:

  • Discontinue support for Windows Vista
  • Discontinue support for Mac OS X versions less than 10.9

The Viewer may continue to work on those platforms for a while, but we won't be testing for it or attempting to fix any compatibility issues.

Coincidentally, Apple has just released OSX 10.12 (Sierra). We do have reports that installing this upgrade will clear your Second Life inventory cache. Normally, that should only cause some performance impact as the cache is reloaded, but in some cases at least in current viewers it causes your avatar to appear as a cloud (see BUG-37653). The workaround is to open your Inventory, find an outfit folder, and drag the outfit folder onto your avatar; after this, you can modify your appearance using any of the usual methods.

We'll also be making upgrades from any Viewer version older than 4.0.5 a required update. This will get you a lot of bug fixes, including many crashes, and will ensure that you're in a better position to upgrade in smaller steps to the great new features above.

Updated system requirements are available here.

Are you interested in hosting a stop along our Second Life Creepy Crawl? We’re looking for spots that will have music, are appropriate for general and moderate audiences, and don’t mind having a few Lindens and Residents dropping in all at once to dance and hang out for a bit.

The Creepy Crawl will be taking place on Halloween day - October 31st - more details to follow for those who just want to come along for the fun! But for those interested is potentially being a stop along the crawl - here’s what you should do.

  1. Make sure your place is listed in the Destination Guide - here’s how to submit.
  2. Hop over to this form and fill it out before October 21st - we’ll start selecting the venues after that!
  3. Keep an eye out for an email and/or notecard after the 21st to let you know if your venue was selected.

Introducing the latest offering from our Starter Avatar Modernization project… 16 New Classic Avatars!

These new avatars are built combining mesh attachments with the original “system” process. Not only are compatibility issues being addressed, but the avatars are more performant and they look great! They can also be tweaked with the system sliders and easily dressed.

Last year, you may remember, we launched a number of new mesh avatars. They included both vampires and everyday people avatars that were built completely using mesh. While they looked good, they made outfit changes difficult and some of our internal tools were incompatible with the assets.

The new great-looking and efficient avatars will be available through the carousel during registration. Existing Residents can also access them through the “Me -> Choose an Avatar” menu in the Viewer.

In search of a new look? Try out one of our new classics today!

Don’t forget to share your photographic adventures to the official Second Life Flickr . Right now we’re looking for Halloween-themed images to use in a marketing campaign. Find out more about that here.
