Linden Lab

360screenshot.jpg

If pictures are worth a thousand words, 360 degree images must be worth millions. That’s why we decided to develop a feature called 360 Snapshots that will make it easy to capture and share 360º images from Second Life. Check out some of these samples!

Available now as a Project Viewer, this is a new way to capture these amazing images all in a single click. At the moment, you will need to host these images on a web server to view or share. Instructions on where to get the Project Viewer and how to help and provide feedback are on the wiki.

This great new feature is not yet complete; there are known issues with the image quality and we have not yet added support for directly sharing images from the Viewer - never fear, we're working on all of that. We’re sharing and hoping all of you will check this Viewer out and report any issues you may encounter. We can’t wait to see your 360 showcase!

Linden Lab

Hello Residents!

Available now are three very exciting new features that we’ve been working on for the past several months and are thrilled to announce!

New Sandbox Regions

First up, we’re proud to introduce 5 new Premium Sandboxes! Like other Premium sandboxes, these are only available to Premium members. We have allocated 4 new regions for cross server code testing, perfect for those multi-region experiences; the Blue Steel, Magnum, LeTigre and Second Life Main regions are each Premium sandboxes arranged directly adjacent to each other in a square. Because one is in the main simulator channel and one is in each Release Candidate (RC) channel, when we roll new RC versions of the simulator it will be easy to test differences and potential issues with region crossings.

sandbox.jpg

The fifth new region is called: Sandbox Premium Weapons Testing which, as the name suggests, is dedicated to testing your SL munitions! In the past, weapons testing was done in general sandboxes where it was prone to overcrowding, griefing and instability. It was very difficult to get testing done. Now we’ve opened up more space for Premium members to test their combat gear in a less disruptive environment.

Portal Park 2.0

Portal Park.jpg

Next up is a brand new design for our hugely popular portal system! Last year we introduced the Portal Park in our 2015 Halloween Promo, which served as a hub for people to gather and access new destinations. Available now is a dual hub and spoke section that spans 2 regions. Now you have quick access to twice as many of the new destinations on the grid! There are two roads, the Red and Yellow brick roads that will take you to their own main hubs. From there, the spokes or pathways extend out and will lead you to teleport gates to the new experiences. Be sure to visit and revisit these parks as the destinations can be both seasonal and/or hints for what’s to come ;)

LLSit

LLSit.jpg

Finally, do you need a diabolical trap for your dungeon? Or, to strap avatars into the seat of a rollercoaster for their own safety? Or, perhaps just some basic crowd control to minimize disruptions during a townhall or event? Introducing the LLSit feature. These new LSL functions allow creators to force avatars onto sit targets as part of an Experience. Scripts can move avatars into specific prims, shuffle them between seats, and prevent them from getting out of their chair before it is safe. It is now also possible to prevent Residents from sitting where you don’t want them by setting a simple parameter on the prim. Whichever way you use this new capability we are looking forward to seeing what you create!

If the Destination Guide were a bowl of Halloween candy, it would be full-sized handfuls of your favorite sweets. It’s packed with tons of fun-filled treats to check out with your Second Life family and friends.

Later this month, we’ll be kicking off the Shop Til You Drop and Creepy Crawl events but there’s no need to wait until then to get frightfully festive! Just reach into our bag of Haunted Halloween spots, and surprise yourself.

Scared of all that decision making? We’ve made it easy by shaking our sack of destinations and selecting some of the newest goodies to fall out of the bag. If your spot should be in the Destination Guide, please submit it for us to consider.

With everything decorated to the rafters, it’s perfect photo-taking time! Don’t forget to share your photographic adventures to the official Second Life Flickr .

New to YouTube 360° videos? It's easy to get started!

On a desktop computer, just click the play button like you do other YouTube videos, then rotate your view by: (1) pressing the WASD keys on your keyboard, (2) dragging with the left mouse button, or (3) clicking the directional widget in the upper-left.  if video playback looks fuzzy, click the gear icon in the lower-right and set that to a higher resolution.

On a mobile device, you'll need the YouTube app. On Android, you can even use Google Cardboard for more depth.

Make sure your web browser is up-to-date. Most modern browsers support 360-degree videos via the HTML5 standard. You can check for compatibility and learn more.

CREEPY CRAWL 2016

A-haunting we will go! Last year we took inworld meetups and Halloween shenanigans and mixed them together for a frightful mashup of mind-blowingly fun times. This year - we plan to do the same - but we need your help to make it happen.

Are you interested in hosting a stop along our Second Life Creepy Crawl? We’re looking for spots that will have music, are appropriate for general and moderate audiences, and don’t mind having a few Lindens and Residents dropping in all at once to dance and hang out for a bit.

The Creepy Crawl will be taking place on Halloween day - October 31st - more details to follow for those who just want to come along for the fun! But for those interested is potentially being a stop along the crawl - here’s what you should do.

  1. Make sure your place is listed in the Destination Guide - here’s how to submit.
  2. Hop over to this form and fill it out before October 21st - we’ll start selecting the venues after that!
  3. Keep an eye out for an email and/or notecard after the 21st to let you know if your venue was selected.

We’re excited to visit as many Halloween spots a possible - and can’t wait to have some spook-tacular fun!

We're in the process of rolling out some important Viewer updates, with more to come in the near future - this note is to summarize those and to alert you to some changes in the supported Viewer platforms.

Embedded Browser Upgrade

We've recently updated the web browser technology in the Viewer to use the Chromium browser technology; this does a much much better job of supporting the latest web standards and media formats. With this change, we are removing the Quicktime plugin from the Windows Viewer; that plugin has been poorly supported for a long time and a persistent source of security problems. Quicktime support will be removed on the Mac version too in a later update so that both platforms will support media in the same way. It may be that some Quicktime media will work even without the plugin, but many more modern formats such as mp3 and mp4 will work more reliably. You can try this Viewer now by downloading the "Second Life VLC Viewer" from the Alternate Viewers page.

Extended Avatar Skeletons

You've probably heard about this as the "Bento" project. This Viewer correctly displays the new bones and attachment points we're adding, giving you lots of ways to make much more sophisticated and flexible avatars at a lower cost. For more information about “Bento” visit the wiki, check out our blog, and give it a try using the Release Candidate viewer.

64 bit Viewers

The current official Viewer is built to use only 32 memory addresses, which limits how much of your computer’s memory it can use at a time. We're updating our builds so that Windows users will be able to choose between a 64 bit (large memory) version or a 32 bit (backwards compatibility) version. The 64 bit version will be much better for most users; any computer bought in the last several years should be capable of running in 64 bit mode. In fact, if you're running a 32 bit version of Windows now, you should look into upgrading to a 64 bit version; our data shows that even just upgrading your OS should reduce the frequency of crashes.  Coming soon to a project viewer near you.

Platform Versions

In order to be able to continue making progress on these and other projects, we'll be making some changes to which Viewers and configurations we support; this week we will:

  • Discontinue support for Windows Vista
  • Discontinue support for Mac OS X versions less than 10.9

The Viewer may continue to work on those platforms for a while, but we won't be testing for it or attempting to fix any compatibility issues.

Coincidentally, Apple has just released OSX 10.12 (Sierra). We do have reports that installing this upgrade will clear your Second Life inventory cache. Normally, that should only cause some performance impact as the cache is reloaded, but in some cases at least in current viewers it causes your avatar to appear as a cloud (see BUG-37653). The workaround is to open your Inventory, find an outfit folder, and drag the outfit folder onto your avatar; after this, you can modify your appearance using any of the usual methods.

We'll also be making upgrades from any Viewer version older than 4.0.5 a required update. This will get you a lot of bug fixes, including many crashes, and will ensure that you're in a better position to upgrade in smaller steps to the great new features above.

Updated system requirements are available here.

I don’t know about you, but I am a 365 days of Halloween kind of person. I go home decor shopping when others go party decoration shopping, and if I deck a hall, it will most certainly be with boughs of spiderwebs and clouds of dry ice. I know that lots of us feel the same and wish stores would pack up those Winter Holiday decorations for a few more weeks and roll out more spook-tacular Halloween treats.

Now is the perfect time for us to pull out the stops and do it up in a BIG WAY. We’re looking for some of your great inworld, Halloween-themed images!

Share your pics, and your work could be featured in an upcoming email or banner campaign - with your avatar name credited of course!

Share your pic on our Official Flickr Page with the tag “SLHalloween2016” so that we can see all of your amazing work. You may submit as many as you like between now and October 5, 2016. Please include your avatar name in the image description so that we know who to credit!

We’ll showcase the chosen image(s) in an email to Residents, as well as in some banner campaigns. We’ll let the chosen image creators know via Flickr.

Tips for your submissions:

  • Make sure that your submissions are appropriate for all audiences.
  • Layout:

    • The main content of your image should be near the center and to the right of the image - similar to the images you’d see on the Second Life login page.
    • Horizontal images work best.
  • Show your avatar or avatars in a scene inworld - an image that tells a story is going to make an impression.
  • Keep your image free of additional text/logos.
  • Higher resolution images work best.
  • Check below for examples of images that we’ve used in the past.

If you need a little inspiration - catch the Halloween spirit by ghost-hunting some of the frightful haunts already submitted to the Destination Guide.

Out now is a feature that is sure to make browsing your outfits a breeze… Introducing, the Visual Outfit Browser out now as part of the default viewer!

In Second Life, personalizing your avatar and expressing yourself through outfits and accessories is an art in and of itself. Bloggers, fashionistas, role-players, and pretty much everyone else knows that finding the perfect thing to wear can be a timely challenge when searching for items in your inventory by name. Creating outfits is a great way to keep some of your best looks organized and within easy reach, but what if you have lots of similarly named outfits, or can't quite remember which look you put together? With the new Visual Outfit Browser (VOB) feature, you can take snapshots, upload images, or even use an existing image from your inventory to assign a thumbnail to your outfit folders. Images should be no larger than 256 x 256 - so keep that in mind when taking your pics.  It's a great way to browse your virtual closet and get inspired for your next wardrobe change.

For more details, check out our Knowledge Base article on this feature. Get the latest browser now, have fun, and we hope you enjoy this cool new feature!

We very happy to announce a major milestone for an exciting update to Second Life avatars…

You might remember the first introduction back in December 2015: we opened up Resident participation for Project Bento. Bento greatly extends the avatar skeleton, allowing the creation of many new kinds of exciting content. Today we are happy to announce the next phase in the development. The Bento Viewer is now a Release Candidate Viewer! This is the last stage before becoming the official release Viewer.

bento1.png

If you are interested in avatar content creation, please give the new Viewer a try, and if you encounter problems, please let us know right away by filing a JIRA bug report. We believe the skeleton and sliders are in their final state, but the Release Candidate Viewer is intended to give us the opportunity to test with a much larger number of users to be sure we're ready to deploy throughout Second Life. It’s very important to hear about any remaining problems as soon as possible. You can also review the release notes for this Release Candidate.

bento2.png

Thanks to everyone who has made Bento possible through your ongoing enthusiasm and feedback! With your help, Bento will soon be ready for integration to the main Second Life viewer, allowing all Residents to enjoy even more innovative avatars.

We're proud to introduce the all-new "Fantasy" starter avatars, covering a diverse range of "genre" styles including steampunk, vampires, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic… and beyond!

There are 10 fresh starter avatars available right now, and you can use them as a basis for further customization — explore the Second Life Marketplace and personalize to your liking. These new avatars have normal "system" bodies with mesh wearables, which makes it easy to change their hair, clothes, accessories, and more!

Screen Shot 2016-08-29 at 3.58.39 PM.png

A bit more history about our long-term starter avatar collections:

Back in May 2014, we introduced a round of mesh-body starter avatars to replace even older starter avatars (that you can still find in your inventory's Library > Clothing > Initial Outfits folder).

Then in November 2015, we superceded all of those with a new batch of “Classic” avatars using "system" bodies that are easier to customize, partially in response to Resident requests pointing out the inflexibility of the all-mesh bodies.

Over the years, we've continued to apply what we've learned about building techniques to our starter avatars, improving their aesthetics and optimizing them to load quickly. Our latest Fantasy starter avatars are vibrant examples of what we consider "balanced content" that is both performance-optimized and looks beautiful — they can save you time getting immersed in one of our many roleplaying communities without unnecessarily lagging yourself or others. We know that content creators want to create optimized content for their customers, and we encourage creators to study these new avatars as examples of balanced content.

Screen Shot 2016-08-29 at 3.57.47 PM.png

In our ongoing quest to help creators be aware of balanced content, we introduced the Avatar Rendering Complexity (ARC) project. And more recently, we rolled out "JellyDolls" — a visual feature to raise awareness of ARC and help you control the resources your Viewer spends rendering others' avatars. We practice what we preach, so our Fantasy avatars have been fine-tuned for low, efficient ARC scores. These are just a couple of the initiatives that help make your Second Life a more enjoyable experience.

Ready for your next adventure?

In the Second Life Viewer, go to Me menu > Choose an Avatar to see the Fantasy avatars. New users will also be able to select one of these avatars during the signup process. Try them today!

There was an internal video made to introduce these avatars to the company, and we loved it so much, we'd like to share it with you!

This episode of the Drax Files focuses on 88-year-old Bernhard Dörries. A successful German film director whose prolific career spans more than 50 years and 129 films, Bernhard continues to explore storytelling and creativity through Second Life.

In Second Life, Bernhard’s avatar is Bernhard McIntyre - a youthful representation of his creative intellect, as well as a vehicle to cope with the emotional and physical challenges of moving into an assisted living situation.

“My avatar is co-creator, equal partner in sharing feelings, co-owner of feelings and emotions,” he says.

The Pillars by Oberon Onmura

"The Pillars: Four Moments of Contemplation" by Oberon Onmura is a forest of mountain pillars inhabited by four bots, each in his own soundscape. And then, something flickers...Oberon is known for his minimalist yet evocative style, sometimes highly scripted, and other times (such as this) more metaphoric. Open now through October at the Split Screen Installation Space.

Ephemeral

Ephemeral. Such a beautiful word. I find the definition matches the word itself. Its meaning is lasting a very short time...short-lived, transitory. It does give a whole new purpose to the art being created. Windlight settings and audio stream are an integral part of this installation. Please press the "play" button in your viewer. The audio stream is from Ambient Art Sound Radio. A project by Danial Kolba.

If you missed out on the nifty, interactive adventure of Dungeons & Nightmares during the Second Life 13th Birthday celebrations the good news is    it’s back! You don’t want to miss out on the fun. Torley Linden and I tackled it together    as you need a friend to take on some of the puzzles. Find a good friend to help you make it through to the end!

It’s no secret that I love to shop in Second Life. I really enjoy going to stores and browsing designs from creators both familiar and new (to me!), but I also really enjoy when events go all out to create a certain theme and mood. From the build to the items offered Enchantment is just one of many shopping events that do it really well!

My house in the physical world is a mashup homage to classic horror movies and the 1950s    so any kind of 50s build in Second Life is worth checking out as far as I am concerned! Drop by the 50s Diner    which blends that Sock Hop nostalgia of yester-years with full on biker badass-ery. It’s simply ginchy!

There’s plenty more brewing in Second Life and the Destination Guide editorial team has surfaced some of the best new places all you have to do is scroll below.

Linden Lab

Today we’re happy to announce that the new Marketplace search is live!  In addition to helping you find what you are looking for faster, we’re excited to swap out the ageing infrastructure that was supporting the old search.  Part of the new search is a learning algorithm that will further improve search results with time - the more it’s used, the better it performs.  Also, keep in mind that you can use boolean operators in search (AND, OR, NOT) for more specific searches.  We look forward to a more relevant and robust experience for shoppers and merchants alike.

We thank the merchants and everyone who pitched in and tried out search during the Beta phase for your input. As always, if you’ve found a bug, please let us know in Jira under the BUG project.

When I explore Second Life, I find the Second Life Destination Guide to be an invaluable resource to discover new places. Our editorial team spends a great amount of time looking through submissions, actively hunting for spots to feature, and categorizing them all into an organized and easy guide for everyone to use. In one of my former jobs, I spent a great deal of time doing a similar ‘taxonomy’ work thinking about how people would discover the things that they were looking for even when sometimes they may not know what they are looking for. It’s a tough and fun challenge that takes creativity and acumen. Show your Destination Guide editors some love by poking around the guide and finding something really cool!

We realize Second Life Residents have dozens and dozens of outfits and looking at a list can be boring and uninspiring, not to mention difficult to remember what is what (imagine that you couldn't look at the clothes in your own closet at home, but instead could only see a list of their names!). With the new Visual Outfit Browser, you’ll be able to see your outfits via an all new gallery-style display, making selecting outfits a snap. You provide the images that are displayed for each outfit or try out VOB’s new snapshot utility. Playing dress-up has never been so easy and fun! You can download this viewer now by visiting VOB’s Viewer download page.

Quicktime Replacement

Apple recently withdrew support for the Quicktime player for Windows, which has in any event been a steady source of security vulnerabilities over the years. This project replaces that plugin for the Windows Viewer with newer and more robust media support (the Mac Viewer will also get this new tech soon). It will play some media that Quicktime would not, but will not play some older Quicktime-only media. Content creators that incorporate media should be testing with this Viewer to see if the media they use is supported. In general, we recommend upgrading any shared media to mp3, mp4, or any HTML5 compatible format for best performance and stability.

Learning and Social Island

The latest Learning and Social Islands launched in March - the first to utilize Experience Tools as part of the new user experience. Early results have shown the new Learning/Social Island setup outperforming all previous (both Linden and Community) introductory setups in some key retention metrics.  We’re continuously making optimizations to that experience based on the data.

Gaming Island

We launched Gaming Island - a new Linden Lab region dedicated to educating Residents about skill games in Second Life.  On this region, anyone can learn how to play all available games of skill in a free-to-play setting. If you want to then go play the games for Linden dollars, the Portal Park makes it easy to find them.

Server Robustness

Over the last several months we've been working to make Second Life servers more robust with new limits and checks to manage bandwidth usage and CPU resources between Residents. This is to make sure that a shared experience will not turn into a shared crasher, and in addition to improving stability for everyone, these changes make things more difficult for would-be griefers.

Group Chat & Bans

We found a way to finally fix a long-standing issue with group chat and bans. Group moderators have the ability to remove troublemakers from a group; with the new change, this causes them to be immediately removed from the group chat and prevents them from returning or causing further disruption in the group.

Quick Graphics & JellyDolls

In order to give Residents more control of their graphics/performance balance and improve their performance, we released the JellyDoll Viewer which allows Residents to set limits on the amount of avatar complexity they render in their viewer. The Quick Graphics feature lets you save optimal presets for all different occasions.

TLS Update

We implemented TLS 1.2 for state of the art security to protect SL users’ financial transactions.

Verified Emails

As part of our continued efforts to improve security and reliability of our services, we've set a goal of only sending emails from Second Life to verified email addresses. One step on the road to achieving this goal has just shipped - we now request all new accounts to verify the provided email address. Keep an eye out for the next steps!

CoreHTTP

For improved performance and stability, we replaced the old HTTP infrastructure of the viewer - no small feat, but one that we know was much needed. This has resulted in fewer problems with high volume operations like loading inventory, and has significantly reduced certain kinds of load on the simulator hosts (leaving more time for actually simulating). It's also made the viewer code easier to maintain and extend.

Marketplace Search

In November we introduced BetaSearch for the Marketplace with a new search engine and infrastructure.  Though it performed much better in some regards, Merchants also let us know about some issues, so we’ve proceeded carefully.  We’ve utilized Merchant feedback to refine and optimize the experience, and now we’re close to promoting the new Search.  Additionally, we’re looking forward to getting off the ageing infrastructure that’s been causing nightly service lockups.  We’re excited about providing better search results and a more reliable service.

Bug Fixes

We’ve been putting in a lot of effort to be more responsive to bug reports and improve turnaround time on fixes.  We triage bug reports daily and you can often see a fix in a public code repository within days of filing a bug.  We carefully consider feature requests and are always thrilled to accept and follow through when we can.  In addition to the focused projects above, just on the Viewer side we’ve had 3 Maintenance Viewer releases this year, with a 4th one in RC, fixing more than 200 bugs in total. And of course, we do try to introduce fewer than we fix! :)

We know that much of the work we’ve been doing is ‘under the hood’. It’s an important priority to us to continue making improvements on performance and stability, while balancing feature development and Resident feedback. If you haven’t already, take the latest Viewer for a spin or experiment with one of the Alternate Viewers for a closer look at what’s been developing - and stay tuned to our blogs to keep up to date!

Xiola Linden

Summer can be a season of colors a beautiful painting of nature in her brightest glory. I wander out to my yard and see bold bursts of red tomatoes, sunny yellow lemons, tiger-striped green cucumbers, all against a blue sky full of fluffy clouds, and I can’t help but smile! The vibrancy and diversity reminds me of the Second Life community, and like that garden, our Destination Guide is full of amazingly colorful stuff!

Where else in any world can you jump from a Japanese summer festival to a Japanese Horror event with just a click? Or shop  summer fashions then drop into a little cafe for some live music? Not too many places, I bet which is one of the many reasons I friggin’ love Second Life.

The Official Second Life Flickr page is here we select images to feature on our social media channels as part of the Pic of the Day program so why not share your inworld adventures with others there?

If your spot isn’t yet in the Guide,, why don’t you submit it?
