It feels like just the other day that we all commemorated a dozen years of Second Life, but here we are - ready to celebrate number 13 in style! Second Life opened to the public on June 23, 2003, and whether you’ve been a part of it for more than a decade or just a few days, we had to roll out the good times and hope you will join us at these fun inworld events! Please tag all your pictures of the SL13B fun "#SL13B" and share them on our Official Flickr Page.

Rock Out at the SL13B Official Music Fest

Oblee+Pupito.jpg

Last summer’s Music Fest was amazing! Once again, we invite you to join us as some of Second Life’s best musicians hit the virtual stage! We held auditions earlier this month, and had a hard time narrowing it down to the performers we have - Second Life is full of amazing musicians, and you may just discover your next favorite music act inworld at any of the live music venues. Thank you to everyone who came to audition, and to those who came to support them!

This year, we’ve extended the festival to span across three days, featuring an amazing line-up across many genres of music. Each day’s event will start at different times so that everyone can enjoy some live music - no matter what timezone you’re in.

Grab some refreshments, prepare to boogie your pixels off, check out the schedule below, and join us at Stage Left for a rockin' good time!

Party Favor!

sl13bbirthdaybears.png

Because no party is complete without a token to take home - and because of the long history of bears in Second Life - you’ll want to drop by the SL13B Community Celebration Regions and pick up this cute keepsake to remember the whole shebang by!

You can pick them up at kiosks across the birthday regions, from June 19th - June 26th. The special party favor is also available on the Marketplace.

We’re excited to spend time celebrating Second Life with our amazing community - and looking forward to SL14B next summer!

Linden Lab

The Second Life community comes together in incredible, compassionate ways that serve as a badge to show what amazing, diverse, and accepting communities we have all over the grid. Love is love is love is love is love.

In light of the tradegy that struck Orlando nightclub, Pulse this past weekend, Casper Warden of CasperVend has set up a kiosk in his mainstore to collect donations for the GoFundMe set up by Equality Florida to benefit and support the victims of this horrific event.

You can donate to the GoFundMe directly if you choose, or donate inworld at the kiosk Casper Warden has set up here - which has already collected an impressive amount of L$s which he plans to donate to the GoFundMe.

If you would like to add a etworked kiosk to your own location inworld that will get added to the donations - you can buy one off the marketplace here.

Here is a friendly reminder that come June 15th, 2016, you will want to ensure that you've updated your web browser to support TLS 1.2.

We first blogged about this in early May, but that post is repeated below for you convenience and will walk you through the easy steps to make sure that you're up to date!

Original Blog Post

As part of our ongoing work to keep Second Life transactions secure and in compliance with applicable regulations, we are updating the browser requirements for Second Life’s web cashier (the tool you see when you login on the web and go to make a payment).

Effective June 15, 2016, you will need to use a web browser that supports TLS 1.2 in order to access the Second Life web cashier; if your browser does not support TLS 1.2, you will not be able to access cashier to send, receive, or exchange L$ after that date.

Please check that your browser’s security support is up to date. You can do this simply by visiting https://www.howsmyssl.com/ and checking that it detects TLS 1.2 in the Version section:

img.png

Updated security support is also required for accessing the cashier via the Second Life Viewer. The latest version of the official SL Viewer is safe. You can download it here: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/.

If you’re not using the latest version of the official SL Viewer, check the browser built into the viewer you use with the same test above. Actively maintained Third Party Viewers should have versions available that have the required support. Older or unmaintained viewers may not, and you will not be able to use them for L$ transactions after the deadline if you do not update.

If you need to update your web browser (or aren’t sure), you can download the latest versions of popular browsers using the links below:

Since late 2015 we have been testing a

on the Aditi test grid, working with content creators. Today we’re announcing the second wave of Bento skeleton improvements!

unnamed.png

This release will be available on Agni, making it available to a much wider audience. However, this is still a limited release, until we’re confident enough that this could be a release candidate and ultimately be part of the release Viewer. Creators, recipients, and anyone wishing to view the new content must be running the latest Bento Project Viewer.

If you encounter Bento avatars and are not using the Bento Project Viewer, you may see some strangely behaving avatar animations and meshes. If you're using a very old (i.e. no longer supported) viewer, encountering Bento content may even cause a crash; updating to the latest Bento Project Viewer will prevent this problem.

We’ve worked very hard these past few months and could not have done it without the help of our community.

and check out the Knowledge Based article to get more information. Thank you and enjoy!

Linden Lab

One of the great opportunities of Second Life is that Residents can create nearly anything they can imagine. One of the great challenges is that Residents can create nearly anything they can imagine. We spend a lot of time considering how to improve performance without limiting creativity, and today we're pleased to announce a major change that will serve to improve performance and influence behavior without restricting creative freedom.

In a conventional video game environment, everything you see has been carefully optimized and constructed to make display efficient; levels of detail and textures are checked and rechecked by highly skilled experts who understand the impact of every choice on the target display system, and as much of the expensive computation as possible is done in advance. In the free-form user-created world of Second Life, there is little opportunity for optimization, the target display environment ranges from low-end netbooks to state-of-the-art gaming systems, and the experience of creators ranges from complete novice to those who could be (and sometimes are) among the best in the field. The results are often astonishingly great, but are sometimes very hard on the display capabilities of less powerful systems, resulting in extreme rendering lag.

We've looked at what sorts of things cause the most difficulty, and one of the biggest factors turns out to be rendering of avatars. This shouldn't be very surprising when you consider how much time, attention, and creativity goes into selecting and customizing them. Unfortunately, creators and consumers sometimes make choices that are so difficult for others to render that they severely impact the experience of those around them; in busy areas, this can be a big problem for anyone who has a less than fantastic graphics system. We could address that problem by more sharply limiting what people can create - putting in new limits on the textures, mesh complexity, and attachment features you can use on your avatar, but we enjoy the richness and variety of amazing avatars we encounter in-world as much as you do.

Instead, we are trying to incorporate feedback to content creators and consumers on the impact of their choices, and ways for users to limit the effect that the choices others make can have on their own system performance. Avatars are quite complex; we have a measure of that we're now calling 'Avatar Rendering Complexity'. That measure is, of necessity, an approximation - Because different systems have different strengths, no one measure can ever perfectly represent the difficulty of rendering an avatar in a universal way, but we've put some effort into making it a useful approximation.

In the newest default Viewer release, each time you change the appearance of your avatar, a small notice with your new complexity value will appear in the upper right of your display for a few seconds. There is no absolute 'good' or 'bad' value for that number; it can range from just a thousand or so to several hundred thousand (all the starter avatars are under 32,000, and the newer ones are all under 10,000). There is also a new graphics preference you can use to limit the impact of high complexity avatars around you; it lets you set a maximum complexity for avatar rendering. Anyone you see that's over that limit is simplified to a "JellyDoll" - a solid color silhouette without attachments shown - saving you most of the cost that you would otherwise have had to draw that avatar and so increasing the performance of your viewer. Each user can select their own value for that limit, trading off performance and fidelity; defaults for it depend on the power of your graphics system. You can override the limit for an avatar by right clicking on them and selecting "Always Render Fully".

Avatar-Maximum-Complexity-slider.png

This limit wouldn't accomplish much if it just changed everyone into JellyDolls without providing feedback to those who wear the most expensive avatars. In order to provide that feedback, your Viewer tells the simulator which of the avatars around you are over your limit and have been simplified. The simulator aggregates that information from everyone and in turn tells you how many of the people around you are not fully rendering your avatar (without telling you which ones they are). When that changes significantly, you'll get a brief notice in the upper right of your screen telling you approximately how many of those around you are (or are not) rendering you because of your complexity. Our hope is that over time this will encourage people to consider the complexity they create - after all, it's not much good having the most elaborate and amazing avatar in Second Life if no one else is seeing it.

Your-visual-complexity-1.jpg

But, you say… This is one more preference that I'll constantly want to customize! Sometimes I want to see the amazing beautiful avatars my friends create, and sometimes I want to move quickly through a crowd and don't care, but changing graphics settings is a nuisance.

We've revamped the graphics settings panels to make that easier, but more importantly we've added a way for you to save collections of settings (called "presets") with a name you pick, and then a pulldown at the right end of the top bar (it looks like a little computer screen) to instantly switch between them without having to even open the setting floater.

ADVANCED-GRAPHICS-PREFERENCES.png

Now you can have one collection of preferences for shopping, one for clubbing, one for intimate settings with your closest friends - whatever you need, and you can add and change them any time.

Graphic-Presets.png

We continue to diligently work on stability and performance of Second Life along with adding cool new features.  As we do that, we hope to provide more and better information to the colorful and talented community of Second Life so that we can continue to make it an even better and more interesting world together.

More information on how to configure these settings is in the Knowledge Base.

Second Life is about to turn 13 this June, and we’re planning a few wonderful ways to help commemorate this incredible event with Residents! Please stay tuned to this blog and our social media pages for all the details as they roll out. We’re kicking off the first of these celebrations today by announcing the auditions for … (drum roll, please) … the return of Second Life Music Fest, sponsored by Linden Lab!

Last year’s auditions turned out to be an incredible showcase of some of the diverse musical talent in Second Life. It was its own mini-musical-fest - with nearly 50 musicians pulling out all the stops in front of the Second Life music community. This bite-sized showcase led to the final lineup for Music Fest. It’s definitely worth reading this audition day wrap up from musician and Second Life Resident Zak Claxton on his blog from May of last year.

This year, once again we’re hoping to draw out all you guitarists, bassists, drummers, singers, tambourine shakers and other music makers to come audition for the festival. All genres are welcome! From bands to solo acts, opera to rock and roll - we encourage anyone to sign up for consideration. The Second Life Music Fest is an opportunity to perform at one of the biggest celebrations in Second Life, and it’s a paid gig!

To sign up for an audition, please complete and submit the submission form no later than May 26, 2016. While we encourage everyone to sign up, it is not a commitment on your part and does not guarantee a spot at the auditions. We will review all submissions and extend audition invitations via email to the designated contact. Each invited act will have a short audition time (5 minutes max) to play and leave an impression on a panel of judges made up of Lindens and Residents. This panel will select acts to be invited to perform at the Second Life Music Fest. Upon completion of a half hour slot at the festival, the designated contact for each act will be eligible for payment (subject to Linden’s terms and conditions).

All Residents are welcome to participate in the auditions as audience members. Again, I can’t stress enough what a great time it is to see so many musicians perform and support one another! For those who are interested, the auditions location will be shared in a future blog post. Showcase dates and times are as follows:

Friday, June 3, 2016 12 PM - 2 PM (SLT)

Saturday. June 4, 2016 from 6 PM - 8 PM (SLT)

Auditions are at the following destination.

For the last decade, Nonprofit Commons has used Second Life to foster a community of practice to help nonprofit organizations network, fund-raise, educate, and reach global audiences with their missions. With more than 60 international nonprofit organizations with missions ranging from LGBTQ activism to AIDS awareness and education, support groups around substance abuse, anger management, and domestic violence, Nonprofit Commons facilitates those groups by helping them explore and learn the unique ways in which Second Life can amplify their messages. Second Life provides ease of access to those seeking weekly meetings and a community of peers - regardless of their abilities - connecting Residents to groups and support they may not otherwise have access to.

"We have an ongoing community and that is key: technology in and of itself is not the answer and the reason why Second Life is so successful is because it brings people together," says Susan Tenby, founder of Nonprofit Commons in Second Life and Director of Social Community & Strategic Partnerships at Caravan Studios, a division of TechSoup - which sponsors Nonprofit Commons.

Watch the

of the Drax Files for more about Nonprofit Commons and how many of the organizations are using Second Life in creative and unique ways that would otherwise be impossible. You can also visit Nonprofit Commons inworld as well as online and check out a variety of nonprofit organizations already operating in Second Life on our Destination Guide.

UPDATE: As of Ocrober 4, 2016, this offer has expired.

********************

In November, we lowered the set-up fees for land purchases by 40%. Today, we’re introducing a limited-time offer that will make land even cheaper by allowing you to lower your monthly tier payments (aka land maintenance fees).

From today until October 4th, 2016, you can “buy-down” your Full Islands and/or Homesteads to the grandfathered maintenance rates. By paying a one-time fee up front, you’ll be entitled to lower tier rates on your land for as long as you hold it (and remember, we now also allow transferring grandfathered land).

The pricing for this offer is as follows:

  • Full Island:
    • One-time buy-down fee: $600
    • Grandfathered maintenance fee: $195/month (regularly $295/month)
  • Homestead:
    • One-time buy-down fee: $180
    • Grandfathered maintenance fee: $95/month (regularly $125/month)

Note: This offer cannot be combined with our Education and Non-Profit discount program, and cannot be applied to Skill Gaming Regions.

If you plan to hold onto your land for longer than 6 months, this is a great deal for you!

To take advantage of this offer, you’ll need to submit a Support Case using the Land & Region -> Region Buy Down case type. In that case you can provide us with the names of the regions you would like to buy down, and we will assess the appropriate buy-down fee per region.
