Can't put on new clothing for new avatar

So I'm still pretty new to Second Life so bare with me here. I'm having some issues putting on new clothing on a new avatar I got. He puts on the default cloths for the mesh avatar I had, but I can't put any other clothing on him. I know you can't put on new clothing on mesh avatars, but like I said, this is one I just bought and I even tried putting them on in sequence order like underpants first then pants, etc. Is there something I'm missing?

Mesh avatars can't wear any clothes that are based on system layers, because does get more or less painted on your skin and that skin is only the old system avatar, because a mesh avatar is not a real replacement of the old avatar, but works like an attachment.

Therefore the mesh starter avatars are close to not being changeable. I suggest to switch to one of the older avatars in your inventory and build up your own individual avatar from that.

If you purchase a mesh body, like from Tellaq, TMP, etc...you have to use appliers to apply the system clothes. That option isn't available for the mesh bodies you start out with when you first rez. Like the previous poster said, you need to take that off and use one of the classic avis.
