Question

I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and when trying to log in today (4/10) I got a compulsory update to 3.7.17, which keeps crashing on login. Most of the time I can't even get past the welcome screen, but when I do the view is crorrupted - all testures show as chequer-boards of various sizes (this includes ground, buildings, clothing and people), and the viewer crashes shortly afterwards.

I was able to log in fine yesterday (3/10, up until around 3am GMT), using very 3.5.1 (I think), but it prompted me to install a mandatory update - hence getting 3.7.17 this morning.

My system details are (as reported by SL 3.5.1 and  3.7.14 is ;)

CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU B840 @ 1.90GHz (1300 MHz)
Memory: 1997 MB
OS Version: Linux 3.13.0-36-generic #63~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 4 22:30:51 UTC 2014 i686
Graphics Card Vendor: nouveau
Graphics Card: Gallium 0.4 on NVC1

and try Graphics pick graphic card also check out the min system need to run SL

the chequer-boards  you see could be the graphic need updating or the graphic card or over heating.

if you are runing wine get the linux viewer you find it better.

if that no good try the clean install of the viewer

download a new copy and install that

I'm surprised you are able to use SL at all, with those system specs.

You need more RAM, you need a better graphics card, and a faster processor would not hurt, either.

Your problem may have been that the update re-set your graphics preferences to a level too high for your system to handle.  Try setting them to LOW.

The nouveau (to be correct, the mesaGL) driver is not really supporting all OpenGl stuff. You need the proprietary driver with uptodate viewers. You will need to remove them and get the proper driver from nvidia.com. But with this system you won't have any fun, it must be like a slideshow only.
